I am having a very hard time thinking of an appropriate title for this thread.

Just heard from an online friend of mine and wanted to share his story.

He is an EMT/firefighter in FL.

They have covid-19 positive people in his department and everyone is being screened and tested..

They had a call for a broken leg and 911 asked if he had a fever they were told no.

They get there and the guy is burning up and said he had a high fever for 3 days,

When asked why he didn’t say so he said he was scared they wouldn’t come if he told them.

Now they treat all calls as active covid-19.

He said it started out as mostly elderly people but they are seeing a lot more 20 year olds right now because they are being stupid.

Last night he had someone with chest/breathing issues that was spitting on them because they did not want to go to the ER.

He has 3 kids, oldest is around 12ish and youngest 5-6ish..

He is living in his shop outside his house and keeping his wife and kids at a distance in the house to keep his family safe.

It really makes you think of the sacrifice the medical community and their family is going through right now.

What a horrid time we are living in! :blackeye: Please thank your friend for his sacrifice and dedication.

I understand people are very anxious and fearful which leads to fear-based irrational behaviour. I'm not sure what the response would have been if he had been upfront about his fever but surely someone would have still attended to him but dressed protectively/appropriately correct?

Although completely unacceptable I'm guessing part of the issue with the person not wanting to go to ER is around the issue of paying for it?

We have tales of front line medical staff and other HCPs staying away from their families to keep the distance, so that they can continue to work.

Hats off to them all!

They're doing an amazing job in times of the highest duress in memory for many of us. Also a huge standing ovation for our truckers, distribution warehouse staff, shelf packers and all other staff currently working in essential services to keep us all fed. They're clocking in massive hours and working at full capacity right now just to keep us all above the poverty line. They're some of our unsung heroes in all of this.

The numbers seem to indicate that serious issues presenting in children due to Covid-19 seems to be extremely rare, so I have hope that they will all be just fine!

I heard on the news that a US teen has died from Covid-19 yesterday.

Too many idiotic youth think they are invincible and don't practice common sense health precautions because they think only the old and sick will be affected.

Unfortunately , Karl, that kind of behavior is not new here in CA. Only the Covid-19 part is new. My DH has been exposed to so many things that people did not tell them they had. Years ago, when HIV was new they had to do the same thing, assume everyone had it. Homeless folks with mental illness and criminals spit on them regularly. It can be a difficult job in regular times and these days are far from regular. I pray your friend stays safe. We think about and pray for my DH's crew and friends daily.

Yes, and there will be a few young people in that age group and a few 20s and 30s it will kill as well..... these age groups tend to think they are invincible.

This disease % wise mostly kills the elderly and overweight middled aged people that have other issues like blood pressure, things like heart problems and diabetes etc. In Italy a lot of morbidly obese people from all age groups have died from it.

BUT it doesn't discriminate it can and will kill anyone.... I wish some of the people partying on beaches, holding house parties, and COVID - 19 parties and people that might have it that refuse to self isolate realised that!!!!

This has been happening a lot; people asking for assistance but not telling anyone that they may have Covid-19. Now you have emergency personnel who are quarantined and can't do their jobs until cleared. In some cases they themselves do end up with the virus.

yes they would have came and got him.

There are a lot of reasons people give them a hard time about going to the ER.
Drugs, booze, mental health issues and yes worry about paying for it. The violent ones it is not usually paying for it they are worried about.

This is so sad to hear. I really appreciate all those on the front lines. They have to deal with so much to begin with and now
coronavirus. I am glad they are treating all calls like they are corona. More work for them but much safer. They all have my
thoughts at this difficult time.

That is so sad

Ironically the hospital is in a pretty good neighborhood, and a block over from the most expensive restaurant in the country.

Meanwhile in less affluent Elmhurst, Queens, People are dying.

I was on Reddit and read this account from a resident doctor treating covid cases in nyc. Oof. Makes me sad and makes me wish there was a 30 day boot camp to get me back into icu care. I loved icu rotations back in med school, could intubate with the best of them. I’m young, never smoked, perfect health, and female. I used to do competitive fighting and am good physically under pressure. I’d happily trade spots with my 60+ year old or at risk icu colleagues if I could be magically gifted their muscle memory and expertise. My dice roll has more advantage than theirs.

Who knows. If things get horrifically bad I may well get drafted back to hospitalist if not ICU care. An MD is an MD if it comes to it. Let’s all hope it never comes to it because it’ll have meant we have lost an unfathomable amount of our physician work force.

Judge much? The teen who died tested Covid-19 positive, but may have died from other health complications. They are still investigating. Someone from the community said he had cancer... but go ahead and blame him. :roll2:

My second sentence was referencing the beach goers in Florida on spring break. I did not blame the teen for anything. I'd rather you not jump to conclusions @ForteKitty
