I always wanted an RV; I have not done that. It sounds like a blast but you might want to check out how much it might cost you in gas vs renting a car and renting a hotel room?
I know to rent them is pretty pricey but as Skippy suggested compare rates to staying in a hotel and having to eat out. We have an RV and it is sure nice to be able to have your own stuff and not worry about someone coming in your room to clean while you are gone.
Oh here are some excellent questions to ask the various companies http://changingears.com/rv-sec-brs-rent.shtml from this website (like who pays for breakdowns, and what happens if it breaks down, etc). Oh and they also brought up a good point in campground fees for the night. I remember my parents wanted to rent an rv and the addition mileage fees were super expensive and the clean out fee was a lot so we didn't end up renting one and just did a road trip that involved renting hotels instead. They look like fun though.
I would say it depends on how many people you are shoving in the RV. We have done it since our kids were really little and we had great times, awesome memories.
With little kids we consider it a re-location not a vacation. You still cook and clean and there is a bit of set up and maintenence with any RV or trailor
at each place you stop. It takes a bit of learning how to do all the connections and dump the tanks. If you are up for all that it can be a great
adventure. But it is not a totally relaxing vacation.
These days our kids are older and one is a total slob. I spent our last ''adventure'' cleaning up his junk and decided it was our last vacation with him. (he''s 21)
Our kids still love to go, we started when the 21 year old was an infant. In fact, they get offended if we dont take everyone. These days we head to
our favorite campground in Pismo Beach and stay.
Luv2sparkle is absolutely right - it is a working vacation. Plus you have to pack so many extra things then unpack it, etc. We pulled our 5th wheeler to Glacier National Park last summer when gas pries were at their highest. We got 8.8 miles per gallon. We could have stayed in a 5 star hotel up there, drove around in our car and eaten quite well for what we paid on gas but we slept better in our own place.
