Okay so I've looked through about 15K rugs this week (I'm on bedrest so I have timmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmeeeeeeeeee).

And here, with much assistance from many of you are the final contenders!

Heya, can I impose on you to look through these (which are in my mind the top contenders) and give me your HONEST feedback on each of them?

1. http://www.horchow.com/store/catalog/prod.jhtml?itemId=cprod74160004&parentId=cat000018&masterId=cat6120733&index=0&cmCat=cat000000cat000046cat6120733cat000018

Love everything about it. It's Geometric, provides contrast has red and allows me to use some of the golden/orange glass vases and candellabra, as well as my orange throw pillows.

2. http://ak.buy.com/PI/0/500/218121577.jpg Same rug, showing both color options: http://www.horchow.com/store/catalog/prod.jhtml?itemId=cprod65520067&ci_sku=H4UFR&ci_gpa=pla

Love everything about it. Question is... which one to go for? The grey and ivory or the ivory and beige? I would likely get this decal for my walls if I got this rug. I think it would be a lovely tie in. http://www.etsy.com/listing/61545823/3-birch-tree-set-with-birds-and-letters

3. http://www.rugsusa.com/rugsusa/rugs/trans-ocean-chains/natural/139201812-203.html

Bold Pattern, contemporary. And I could have a lot of fun going eclectic on the rest of the decor. I'd pick the black one. I think this one would stand up to cat wear and tear well.

4. http://www.rugsusa.com/rugsusa/rugs/momeni-el-29/ivory/126EL29IV-203.html

Love it. So contemporary and FUN. Gives the DH a headache though.

5. http://www.csnstores.com/Nourison-RI04-SLT-NO10771.html

Will provide both contrast and texture. The grey is there but it is much lighter than the charcoal sectional. And I think the table will work perfectly with it. It's a little more traditional than the others but it still suits.

6. http://www.csnstores.com/Eastern-Oriental-Rugs-OT28IV8X10-EOR1099.html

Completely BOLD. And so much fun! Most like animal print of all the choices. I think it's TOTALLY fun.

7. http://www.horchow.com/store/catalog/prod.jhtml?itemId=cprod71160017&parentId=cat000018&masterId=cat6120733&index=63&cmCat=cat000000cat000046cat6120733cat000018

Wild and fun, provides contrast and is totally contemporary.

So... as far as I'm concerned, these are the top 7 may I have your honest opinions please?

Thank you!

I replied in your other thread before I saw this one.

Here are my thoughts:

1. While I really love red and orange, I hesitated on this one because there's so much cream in it as well. I was thinking of your cats and wondered if their fur will show up too easily. Maybe not.

2. Love this one (both colors).

3. Pretty. Not my favorite but I do like it.

4. Not a fan (too busy for me, but that's ME)

5. Very nice. I'm surprised you like it because it is more traditional.

6. Too busy (again, for me, and this isn't my room). I do really, really like the "giraffe" rug that C-tek linked n your other thread though.

7. Not loving this one.

OOOOH pretty, my only concern is it's light, I don't know how much foot traffic it would get but it'd never last in my house :? Love everything about it. It's Geometric, provides contrast has red and allows me to use some of the golden/orange glass vases and candellabra, as well as my orange throw pillows.

I like the stark contrast in the grey and ivory, plus it looks more manageable upkeep wise.

I like the black as well, the contrast again. I prefer a dark anchor on the floor and this one is just dark enough.

It would give me a headache too. I'm all for a bold pattern but this one is too busy.

This one made me go  and say OOOO out loud (I got some funny looks at work)

Completely BOLD. And so much fun! Most like animal print of all the choices. I think it's TOTALLY fun.

I think it's way too busy. If the contrast was a bit more muted it'd work, but I got dizzy looking at it.

I'm just ok with this one. LOL

My preferences in order

5
1
3 (in black)

L -- I keep going back to these and my favorite is #2. I'd definitely go with the grey/ivory.

They are all good choices, but I loved #5 the most. My only concern is the shade of grey. It looks like it could be too blue. It's so hard to tell--I did my bedroom in grey and had to return three duvet covers and two sets of sheets because the shades of grey didn't match the rest of the room.

ETA: Feel free to completely ignore this--I know you've been rug shopping for rugs for days and probably don't need any suggestions. That being said, it seems like you're either wanting somehing red or grey and I agree with the others that pairing either color with cream could be problematic with cats. I checked out West Elm because I really like their greys (not too blue). This rug is grey and red:

http://www.westelm.com/products/nature-sketch-rug-r986/?pkey=cpattern-rugs-flooring

It might be too dark of a shade of grey

I love that one too, NEL! I love the pop of color.

Hi Gypsy, still plugging away on this project huh? So exciting! I love this stuff! Here is my .02, I think it is important to mention again that the accent color you are hoping to use is red. Red is such a bold color lending itself to black/white and geometrics in my opinion. Some of the rugs that are more muted or more in a light grey/cream combo I feel would work better with an orange or a light aqua blue accent color because they aren't as bold or dark as the red. See what I mean? Again just my personal opinion! So here is my rundown.....

1 - I don't love the red/orange/white combo personally. I think you'll have more versatility with a neutral rug.
2 - like it in black. Decals would be a great idea!
3 - so far is my fav in black/cream
4 - I really do like this one in the black/wht but if DH gets a headache don't bother
5 - not a huge fan of the colors in 5, very muted. I feel like this rug would go well if your accent color was going to be a light aqua blue, but not red.
6 - if your bold enough to pull off an animal print, i really like this one.
7 - again more muted colors with grey/white. I can see this more if the accent color was going to be orange, because it's not as bold and dark as red.

My fav's are 3,4, and 2 in third. i think you could still pull off any of them with decals though depending on the decal.

Hope that helps! Keep us posted! We will need some photos of the finished room!!!

I'm in love with the first one! I liked it so much I kind of skimmed through the rest because I couldn't imagine any of them being better. Haha.

eta: Just read the other responses and apparently none of us agree! I'm going to go back and give the others a second look and see if any jump out at me.

eta2: I really like the pattern on #5, but I also worry about the shade of grey. Maybe something similar to that in a different color so you don't have to worry about the greys matching perfectly?

I saw a couple on Target too! Probably cheaper but you said you like to change things up quite a bit and worry about damage from the kitty so they might work! Sorry if I am just adding to the confusion!

http://www.target.com/Home-Blossoms...m_brand-bin&searchRank=salesrank&frombrowse=1
I really like this one and I think it would look nice with some decals kind of like below...

With this one you can buy matching accessories which is awesome!

Couple of different choices!

Love the cosa bella in either color!

I saw this rug too at West Elm! I think its beautiful.

That being said...

These are by far my favorites
2 (in beige/ivory)
5 (really beautiful, can go with so many accessories)

The others I would rank
3,7,1

I didn't consider 4 since John doesn't like it. 6 makes me dizzy.

Gypsy, which decal do you plan on using? I'm curious because I think because it's such a dominant statement, I would want a rug that would coordinate with it a bit instead of thinking about each piece so independently.

Everyone does have different opinions but that's a given considering how personal rugs are. 8) I am appreciative to hear everyone's thoughts though as it helps me greatly.

Hi Henderson... I would likely only use a decal if I got the second rug. The Cosa bella, then I'd get the decal I've listed right next to it. I have textured walls and am not sure the decals will work with them any way, but the seller is sending me both a color sample and an application sample so I can decide. Thanks!

You've all helped me a lot. I had John go through the list of 7 and he's hit his limit of rug viewing "for the year." His main comment is "I don't like repeated geometric shape patterned rugs...." Which was kinda funny considering that's exactly the look I was after.

His preferences, in order, were
#2 Cosa bella in Grey and Ivory
#5 More traditional rug.
#1 ONLY because I love it so much, otherwise it's "way too geometric" and he "doesn't get the appeal".

Lizzy, you've been an amazing help. I think I can do red with the less bold rugs. My couch is charcoal, so nearly black. It's pretty strong. Add in a few black accents in the room and I think it can ground the red even with a less bold rug. Perhaps a bolder coffee table might have helped though.

I am thinking of pretty much down to 1, 2, or 5.

I wish I could order swatches.

I'm wondering if I can find them anywhere locally to view. I have swatches of my couch fabrics.

Horchow's returns are easy so I can wait for free shipping and a discount and just order both 1 and 2 when I have the couch and table and just decide which one I want and return the other. This is the most likely senario.

NEL the west elm rug is lovely, but I want ivory or some lighter contrast in there when I look at it. It's just a little too dark with my charcoal sofa.

Would still love to hear your thoughts. Everyone has been very helpful AND PATIENT. I truly appreciate it!

Of your favorites, I would do 1 or 2 if you plan on adding red accents (although some of your non favorites would work with a charcoal gray, orange or red combo). The fifth, is very elegant and you could add a bit of red in small doses but I think you're pinning for something more bold.

I think #2 is going to be the winner! Gypsy, if you order both and then ship one back do you think it is going to be a PITA because of the size???

I agree that it is probably down to 1 or 2. And I don't need to see 1. So what I am really going to try to do is see if I can find the Cosa Bella locally and take my couch swatches to see it.

If the grays don't work together I will most likely go for 1.

I do like #5 though, so when I looking for places to rug browse I will ask to see if anyone has that one for viewing.

Lizzy. Not really. I only need to open the top of the rug packaging so I can see if the grey is the right shade. So what I would do is not open either fully. If the Grey in the Cosa bella is wrong then I just call Horchow and they arrange for pick up (and charge me 5 dollars for return shipping). If the Grey is the right color, then I would open it and roll it out. If I like it. Done, the orange goes back. If I don't... then I open the orange one and use the wrapping from the two rugs to wrap the reject and send it back.

It's manageable. Still. It would be easiest just to be able to see the darn things before I buy.

You may already know this, but Horchow is part of the Neiman Marcus Group and they carry many of the same items. Perhaps you could see the rugs in the showroom at NM? I believe the only showroom in in SF, but it might be worth a trip to save yourself the trouble of buying/returning the rugs. There is the added benefit that you could see other rugs, too! Right now NM has a free shipping offer, which is about as good as it gets at NM! (NM doesn't have the same wonderful '30% off entire site' sales that Horchow has.) Good luck!

Okay so, most places that carry lots of rugs are drop shippers. And know nothing about their rugs. Sounds familiar right.

Well, I wanted to ask some questions about some of the rugs I am looking at and since I really liked their website I called rugstudio.com

I spoke with Ashley and she knew her stuff, man. Got all kinds of information about the rugs, quality, characteristics, the reputation of the manufacturers.

#1 is made by a company called Global Views. The cotton backing is a flag that the rug is not high end in manufacture and the style of weaving means it will likely shed a lot. It also is going to stain with the cats more than I am going to want.

#2 is handtufted but has some synthetic, so it's no where near as nice as an all natural fiber rug, but the Rug Market is known for bright lovely rugs and good quality wool. And that with this rug, it looks like the acrylic is not used for the weave but just to add a sheen to the rug.

#5 NEL is right that this one is going to be a blue-gray... and my charcoal has a very very slight taupe undertone, so it probably wouldn't be the best pairing.

Ashley also offered to look around for me and to think of rugs she's seen and recommend back some items. I was EXTREMELY impressed with this company.

#1 is out. Cause the only thing that made the idea of a mostly cream rug work was that it was high quality and would clean well... but that doesn't appear to be the case.

#5 is also out.

So... Cosa Bella is the front runner.

I eliminated the other two I mentioned above as well. One is a shedder and will grab my cat hair and hold onto it, the other is going to be washed out and the colors not crisp, plus it's all acrylic.

Overall. Think I've found my rug vendor. Now I just need ot hone in on a final rug selection.

Oh by the way. About samples. Apparently a "good" vendor will have samples of many of their rugs to send you and will be familiar enough with their products to be able to help you figure out what will work for you and what won't. But if there is a rug you like that has no sample you can order the smallest size in that rug (2x3) and then send it back if you don't like with hassle free returns. The return shipping isn't free, but it is only about 5 bucks for a rug that size.

Pretty cool. I AM going to look for my local rug market retialer and hopefully go see the Cosa bella. BUT if I can't find it or it is inconvenient I can always just order a small one and go from there.

Ooooh! what a great idea! That will be perfect even in a small size to get a feel if it will work or not! Keep us posted!!!

Those are my two favorites!

#2 (in the beige) and #5, for me.

But....

A lot depends on the exact shades you're working with, and on the amount of space you have to play with. Re shades - I'm guessing that the microsuede fabric is very much a monotone, which means that you could easily get a rug in a shade of gray that actually clashes with the sofa (a greenish gray versus a yellowish of reddish gray, for example). Re size - some of the wilder choices might work in a large room but drive you crazy in a smaller space.

I'm leaning towards no. 5 because your microsuede upholstery fabric probably won't have much nuance in either texture or color. This rug will add some subtlety and depth.

ETA oops - I see that I'm late to the party and other posters have covered this already! Just wanted to add -- good luck! I love the sofa and table combo you're starting out with!

Here's a picture of the Cosa Bella rug that Gypsy's probably getting (#2):
:appl:

The white border isn't part of the rug although it looks that way. It's just the way it came out when I copied into Paint.

Thanks for the all the information and sharing your rug shopping adventures.

BTW, I have a typo. When I said "A good rug store will have samples" I meant "swatches."

Lizzy, I know right? I was like "D'oh!" Why did I think of that!

Thank you MS.

VR... the funny thing is once number 1 was eliminated 5 was one I was hoping would be my back up if the Cosa Bella didn't work out. But it is a blue-gray not a taupe grey. If I still can't find anything other than the Cosa Bella after Ashley sends me links tomorrow then I will likley order the 2x3 of that one to see if it will work with the couch swatch I have. Since it's a 5 dollar shipping fee it is worth it to me. DH really likes it too.

Thank you for posting that Zoe, you rock. I'm so excited about this buying a 2x3 thing option in case I can't find the rug to view locally.

Claire... well, as long as I'm doing the leg work, maybe someone else who is or will be looking for a rug can benefit too. Live and learn.

Thanks all. I'll share anything that DH and I both like from Ashley's selections when I have them. I love good customer service!

I'm sorry that I didn't read all of your responses. It's late and I'm going to bed. I was thinking in another direction. Try an area rug and place the furniture around it. Take a look at some oriental rugs that are not too bright. They lend a very nice to touch a room. If you don't want to do that, try an area rug with slight tonal variations in a neutral color. Google Remodelista for some ideas. I enjoy keeping my walls and carpet neutral, except for the oriental rugs and use bolder colores in the artwork, throw pillow, an occasional chair, and throws for the sofa. I will return tomorrow, when my brain is in gear and try to round up some links for you.

I'd appreciate that a lot RS!
