We replaced our defunct dvd player with a Panasonic BluRay player with built in wifi and then decided to give Netflix a try and we love it. Now we would love to stream shows/movies on our upstairs tv but don't want/need to buy another blu ray player. I have been reading about Roku and wonder if anyone has one and what they think of it?

We have a blueray player with netflix option in our great room and Roku in the master. Roku's great; if anything, I'd give it the advantage in watching netflix movies because the interface is quicker to get to netflix than our Sony systems. Great price and size too.

Thanks for the feedback. I think we are going to get the Roku 2XD that sells for $79.99 (I have a couple of Best Buy certificates to redeem). I was initially eyeing the XS, but we don't play games so why pay the extra money, though if this one works out well, we may get the other one for the vacation home.

Attentively watching this thread.

I've just talked DH into NOT getting cable in our new house and going with Roku. We haven't actually had TV in over 18 months and I don't want it back now. I've been streaming Netflix and Hulu on our laptops and iPad. So much cheaper than cable! DH's big concern is football season, but I've got months and months before that's an issue. :cheeky:

Speaking as someone who has one of those fancy schmancy 3D TV's with the full web browser and app program built in...and another boring old TV with a Roku... the Roku is MILES BETTER. I had a DVD with the capability built in and the interface was so bad. If Netflix/Hulu are your primary objectives, get a Roku. You won't regret it. You can program your normal remote to work with it too so you don't need another remote around just for it. It's just simple, small, and it works.

One other option to consider is the $99 AppleTV box; though we do not currently own one, it's as small as a Roku Box, about the same price, and if you have Apple Airport you can communicate between the new ipad and it. (At *some* point I'd guess apple will have ipad act as a remote for an iTelevisions, but the combo mentioned above gets it a lot closer.)

April20, combining Roku with a good HD antenna might work for you; amazon reviews can be helpful. Of course, if your sports-lover is as ardent as my in-house sports lover, well, ya just gotta come to terms that your annual cable bill is about the same as a really nice getaway vacation week at a 4-star resort. Urg.

We bought one in Vegas from Fry's. When we got back to home to try it out, it wouldn't work because it would only point to Netflix.com and we can only watch Netflix.ca :nono: We ended up sending the Roku to a friend who lives in Seattle and he likes it.

We bought a WD TV afterwards and it's pretty much the same thing. We like it. Interface is easy to use and we watch stuff off our home network. Also, Canadian Netflix content sucks compared to what you get in the US.

Picked the Roku 2XD at Best Buy's today, but haven't hooked it up yet. They matched Radio Shack's sale price of $69.99 and I had $20 in Best Buy rewards to use, so I got it for $49.99.

Ok, hooked the Roku up yesterday (so tiny and so easy!) and watched Murder She Wrote. My DH is so happy because now we don't have to watch the same things. He can watch downstairs and I can watch upstairs.
