Skippy, I do worry about the flood gates, but I also recognize that I can''t completely deprive myself of everything I every enjoyed. So, little by little over the last 6 months or so, I have permitted myself to indulge a little bit. The first 2.5 years of Rebuild Rod, I didn''t stray at all. Now, I know I can have a couple slices of pizza, or even split a small piece of dessert with Charlie. But, I can''t ever go back to eating the way I did. Ever. Never. What I will do during the holidays is continue to eat like I do everyday with the exception of Thanksgiving day and Christmas day. On Thanksgving, we''ll go for a nice long run to offset the dinner we''ll have. And we''ll have a pretty normal Thanksgiving dinner, but I will likely only have one plate full and then I''ll have one slice of pumkin pie. And on Christmas day, I''ll have pretty much what I want, including a large piece of chocolate fudge cake. Of course, I''ll continue my workout schedule schedule throughout the holidays. That''s one thing that I won''t ever stop doing.

I''m not sure I''m helping you. It''s taken me a long time to allow myself to have some of the things I enjoyed in my ''fat'' days, I just know I have to be good the rest of the time.

Oh Thank you Lorelei.....I''m not sure my advice was particularly helpful this time........

Kimberly, I wanted to go to the protest here in Tampa, but it was Charlies only day off this weekend, and he just wanted to have a nice quiet day. I''m sure it was really something to see so many people relaxing after the protest. According to the news here, it was a pretty small turnout, but it was on the news and I even saw people I knew.
Rod, thank you for information on how you manage and stop the flood gates. I feel like I am struggling with maintenance and get frustrated because a few "extras" not even pigging out puts on a pound or two. I am not worried I am going to wake up wearing size 5X clothes again tomorrow but I think it was easier trying to lose weight instead of just trying to stay where I am. I am hanging in there though and continue to strive to eat and live a healthier life. Thanks!

Rod!

I haven''t been on PS for a bit, and was I ever glad to have checked in this evening and found another guy posting on the site. I''ve been a PS follower for a bit, and I agree with you, its been a great forum. Enjoyed reading the story of you and your partner, and wish you the best in your lives in Florida.

Rod, I think your advice is quite helpful to me for sure. The holiday''s are especially difficult for me; I think I am going to try balance but avoid things that I know will for sure open the flood gates. I can eat pizza but I can''t eat at certain pizza places, etc. Thank you for your thoughts and suggestions dear friend!!! Lorelei, thanks!

Have you been watching Desperate Housewives or is the Vampire show trumping DH? hehe Last nights I thought was disturbing; I had to look away in one scene.

Have a great evening and I always look forward to your evening post. hehe

Marcy, I think maintenance is much harder. It''s where most people stumble. And I think that''s because during the lose weight period, we concentrate on ensuring that we burn more calories than we consume. Once that''s over, it is hard to keep the balance and unfortunately, many just start gaining weight. I think this is going to be a lifelong struggle, for you and for just about everyone else who has lost weight. What you don''t want to do is have to diet every few days. That would be difficult and frustrating. You may have to count calories to keep things in check. Either that or increase the amount of time you spend on the treadmill. I think for me, one of the reasons I''ve been so successful in not gaining weight is I continue to work out so hard that I keep burning calories and keep my metabolism high even when I''m not working out. I don''t know if this helps or not, but I know it''s an ongoing struggle for so many of us.

Hi Gemnick! It''s nice to meet you and it''s nice that you stopped by and introduced yourself. Yes, we guys on PS are kind of rare, unless we''re one of the PS vendors, or Storm........For me, PS has been a salvation and a place where I''ve made some wonderful friendships and the place I turn to to keep me up on my health and fitness goals. Anyway, thanks for saying hello!

Dear sweet Skippy. I''m still not sure antyhing I wrote was of much benefit, but you are so sweet for saying it helped. It really all comes down to being accountable and allowing yourself a few fun things, but then going right back to eating healthy and working out in between. The holidays are a difficult time. Did you know most Americans gain anywhere from 7 - 10 pounds during the holidays? And I used to be one of those people. Egads!! Now, I know I can have some fun, but only on the special days.

An estimated 20,000 people marched in San Diego, which is awesome. I understand where Charlie was coming from.

I too struggle with maintenance. I''ve finally stepped away from the scale! You inspired me to do so, and I appreciate that.

Have a fab day.

Rod - that last post was fantastic! I feel like that is what I have to focus on now, is maintaining, making sure I keep burning calories while getting enough food, and keeping fit. Hopefully I can manage to do so.

Oh thank you dear Skippy. I''m glad you thought it was helpful. I''m betting you''ll do just fine this holiday season. You''ve worked too hard to go too far off course.

Wow, 20,000 people must have been an unbelievable sight Kimberly. Maintaining is truly the hardest thing to do. I know you struggle with it, as do we all. I''m also betting that since you and John joined the gym and you''ve been riding your bike more, maintaining is a bit easier. I''m glad you no longer are a slave to the scale and it''s a compliment if I helped you with that. It''s been several weeks since I weighed myself. I use my clothes as my measure of how well I''m doing. The last time I did weigh in, I had gained a few pounds and for the first time, I realized it wasn''t fat at all. I have really gained muscle size over the last several months and I know the few pounds are muscle weight, which makes me mighty happy!!

Thank you dragon!! We all struggle with maintenance. I have no doubt that you''ll keep up with your fitness, burn calories, eat healthy and stay fit. Thanks for being a friend!!

Rod, I am sure I''ll continue to count my calories and do more walking all the time. I can walk at a faster pace and longer on the treadmill than even a month ago. I especially like to do it this time of year when I am chilly. It warms me up. Thank you for the advice. It''s comforting to know that so many of us on the HLT all are going through the same thing.

Marcy, I don''t think you will, I know you will. And one day, you''re going to surprise yourself and you''re going to walk longer and farther and faster and then, maybe just maybe, you may walk fast enough to be running. You''ve made such tremendous strides and I truly believe you will continue to make them!!

Thank you so much Rod for the encouraging words. Something I notice at school is I stand all the time. I used to always set down at the desk up front but I never liked it because the stool is uncomfortable and I felt isolated from the students. Now I just stand in front of the desk and walk around. I even stand and read the newspaper before the class shows up. I would never had done that before.

Rod, if you don''t mind me asking what do you and Charlie do for Thanksgiving? Do you have a traditional turkey day? hehe Or your delicious lobster dinner? That is awesome you are running again!!!

Yes, what are your plans for Thanksgiving? Please eat some turkey for me.

I hate to admit it but the 3% info is really freaking me out. I am okay but thinking a lot! Sometimes I have to take stock of where I am. I am SOOOOO glad I have you, Skippy, Lorelei, Kimi and all my other wonderful HLT friends to help me put things in perspective.

Marcy and Skippy, we have a very traditional Thanksgiving dinner. But we don't over do it. It will be just the two of us, since we don't have any family in Tampa, but we do have a nice day. We get up on Thanksgiving morning and usually fix a real breakfast, which could be pancakes and sausage or waffles and sausage. We so rarely have a real breakfast. We've already ordered a small fresh turkey and we make traditional sage stuffing (in the bird thank you very much). I make my own giblet gravy from scratch and we have real mashed potatoes and a vegetable dish, like steamed carrots with cinnamon and butter for an added treat. Charlie will make a pumpkin pie, which he always puts too many spices in, but I always say it's the best I've ever had........To Charlie if a recipe calls for 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon, that translates to 12 tablespoons (slight exageration of course). He also uses too much clove and nutmeg, but it makes him happy and that's the most important thing! Now to help offset our traditional turkey dinner, we'll go for a nice long run and burn as many calories as we can while the turkey's in the oven.

Marcy, do NOT skip Thanksgiving dinner. There are just a couple days that diets should be off limits and Thanksgiving is one of those days (Chirstmas is the other one). That doesn't mean you eat until you're ready to explode, but it does mean you should enjoy the day and not worry about having some indulgences. Marcy.........You are going to be in the 3%. If I had any idea I might have scared you, I wouldn't have mentioned what the doctor said to me. Now, I'm not going to eat some turkey for you, because you're going to enjoy your own turkey (assuming you and Marty usually have a turkey on Thanksgiving). OK??

Skippy, Christmas day is Lobster day for us. And since we had to give Santa a pink slip this year (except for a few small things), the lobster will be the big treat of the day for sure.

Rod you have me laughing so hard here about Charlies pie. My grandma did the same thing, only with her cheesecake.
Every time she made it, she would have to announce "there are 12 eggs in that pie". ha ha ha ha. It felt like lead hitting your stomach. Bless her heart. I miss her like crazy.

She also would up the spices on everything she baked. Gotta love Charlie and yes it makes him happy, as it did my grandma. They think it makes their dish taste better.

I am glad you both are doing well, my friend. I have to watch what I eat next week too. It is so hard, with all the wonderful food that will be put in front of us. It is so hard to "hold back" and not just dive into it.

Hugs to you and Charlie
Linda

Rod, your Thanksgiving day and dinner sound marvelous.I had to laugh at the pie story – I eat things Marty cooks too and say they are awesome! The reason I don’t eat turkey is because I am very allergic to it.I love it though – I’d rather eat it than anything else on Thanksgiving but if I do I will be sick (very bad flu-like symptoms) for days. The last time I had it I was in bed for 3 days so I swore it off for good.Don’t feel bad about telling me what the surgeon said; sometimes I just kind of freak out realizing where I came from and where I am now. It’s not that I doubt I will continue to strive to be healthy it’s just that I don’t feel special so I wonder why I succeed where so many others have failed.I told Marty tonight that I don’t feel like I struggled, I don’t feel like it was hard and I don’t feel I was deprived so sometimes it just all boggles my mind. That is why I am so glad to have you and the HLT to talk to about the strange thoughts floating around in my head.I will thoroughly enjoy Thanksgiving.I have some wine, some mashed potatoes, I usually take a chicken breast for my meat and then have small pieces of pie and cheesecake.I think this year I’ll take the cute nephews for a nice long walk too.

Hi Linda!! I''m glad you laughed about Charlie''s pumpkin pie. I truly wouldn''t him to change one thing about that pie. And I secretly look forward to the overwhelming spicy tast. After all these years it''s part of our holiday. Your grandmother sounds like she was a wonderful woman and I''m sure you do miss her a lot.

Marcy, it saddens me to see you say that you''re not special. You are so special in so many ways. And you succeeded where other''s don''t, won''t and can''t because you worked so hard to lose so much weight. I''m sorry you''re allergic to turkey. To be honest, the only time we ever have a turkey is Thanksgiving and we have leftovers thenight afterward and a couple turkey sandwhiches, then I turn it into a big pot of turkey, vegetable soup. That''s about all the turkey I can handle. I hope ou enjoy the trimmings and your chicken breast!

Rod, I am unique and special in a Marcy way (as all people are) but I don’t feel in regards to my weight loss that I am special even though I know what I did is unusual.Thank you so much for putting a new perspective on it for me about what I have done.I am back to my normal self today. Enjoy your leftover turkey sandwiches for me.They are my favorite sandwiches.Have a fun and relaxing weekend. You certainly deserve it.

Marcy, what you did was against the odds in so many ways. If you recall, the doctor I was working in with at the gym, who gave me the 97%/3% statistic is a surgeon who performs gastric bypasses and lat band operations. You could have been the kind of person who decided you had a thyroid or metabolism issue and taken the easy road to losing weight by having an operation. But you chose to do it with hard work and determination and you proved that it''s possible to amazing things if you put your mind to it. Besides being a warm and loving person, you have amazing determination and in anyone''s book you are very special!

Thank you Rod. I appreciate all the kind words of support.

Ah, that is too cute about the spices; you and Charlie''s relationship is wonderful!!! I am making the pies too this season so I will think of you and Charlie when you make them! I love that you have lobster for Christmas; I love lobster, shrimp and crap legs!!! Giant hugs to you two cuties! Have you been driving around with the top down now that the weather is gorgeous out!? hehe

Anytime Marcy!!

Hey Skippy, I actually had the top down today. It was about 70 outside, but not windy and it felt great to drive top down. I probably got a bit too much sun though. I ran 4 miles at noon today and the sun was beating down on me. I was wearing a baseball cap though. We bought all the fixins for Charlie''s cinammon, nutmeg clove pie with pumpkin flavoring last night.........LOL He so enjoys making the pie. As long as he doesn''t overdo the clove or nutmeg, it''s usually great! And yes, I really look forward to our Christmas lobster AND my once a year piece of chocolate fudge cake!!

I''m enjoying this thread! It''s fun to learn about others, and you sound like such a sweet man, Rod. I laughed reading your comments about Charlie''s pie. I''m sure he''s probably thrilled with how it comes out, right? Just go with it.

How sweet!

You know, I heard that lobster is actually cheaper than turkeys right now. I thought that was interesting (maybe the prices will remain good straight through the holidays). Having lobster on Christmas sounds like a great plan!

The chocolate cake you have, your once a year treat, is it homemade or do you get it from somewhere?

Good question Zoe! Tell us more about the wonderful chocolate cake.

All this talk about nutmeg and cinnamon is making me hungry for gingerbread. That is an itch I might have to scratch over the holidays. It''s best warm with cool whip.

Oh thank you Zoe!! I''ve enjoyed sharing our life together here and we have much to be proud of. The support from all of you is so comforting and wonderful. I don''t know how old you are, but when we got together, the internet didn''t exist and a couple like us had to hide for the most part. The world while not as open as we would hope, has certainly made significant strides towards some semblance of acceptance. I''m glad you found Charlie''s cinnamon, clove/nutmeg pie with pumpkin flavoring amusing. I actually look forward to it and it will be baked tomorrow night, which always fills the house with great aroma''s. I wasn''t aware that lobster is cheaper than turkey, but then it might make sense as most turkeys these days are pretty big. I can''t wait for my Christmas lobster. I also get a few pounds of Soft Shell Clams, which are also called steamers and even sometimes they are called piss-clams.......LOL

Marcy, the chocolate cake isn''t one we make. There''s a deli here in Tampa and they make the absolute best chocolate cake. They also have superb carrot cake and chocolate mink cake at Christmas. But, I just for the pure chocolate cake. The cake is dense, but not too dense and the frosting.....oh man that frosting. It''s just perfect. It''s just I would make it if I made a chocolate cake. Oh my, I''m salivating thinking about my once a year treat!!

Rod,
My husband adores the soft shell clams. I like the Cherry stone ones myself. You have me salivating just thinking about your Lobster dinner at Christmas. I love Lobster, and don''t get enough of it. Have it in Nantucket, but that''s about it. I think Charlie''s pie sounds delish. I can just smell it now. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!!! Lisa

Rod, I kind of remembered you bought your favorite chocolate cake. My sister and I make a chocolate pound cake that is very yummy and sounds like yours. It''s very dense, very fattening and very tasty. You use a cake mix, add pudding, tons of eggs and butter. I think I just put on a pound thinking about it. Just think a month from today you''ll be enjoying that divine cake. Yippee!!!

Hi Lisa!! I so love soft shell clams. Most people thing they''re only from New England, but I grew up in Maryland on the Chesapeake Bay and they were quite abundant there. My father would go clamming and come home with a bushel basket full of them. Of course as I kid, I thought they were disgusting. It wasn''t until I was an adult my tastebuds changed and all of the sudden they were terrific to me. There''s one place not far from us that imports lobsters from New England and clams and I go there on Christmas Eve to get our lobster and clams. I can''t wait for that. I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving too!!

Yummm Marcy, you''re chocolate pound cake sounds terrific. I''m so looking forward to my piece of cake in one month!! I hope you and Marty have a terrific Thanksgiving!

Happy thanksgiving dear friend, sending you my love to you and Charlie!!! Cheers.

Rod, wishing you and Charlie a special Thanksgiving. Have a wonderful dinner together.
