Got engaged about 3 weeks ago and the ring was quite snug when putting it on, I had to use lotion to squeeze it past my knuckle. Now trying to get it off to get it properly resized, can't get it off! Tried lotion, icing, and using the floss technique and can't get it off. I can't imagine that the ring needs to be cut off when it just fit past my knuckle less than a month ago. The ring fits fine on the base of my finger, but the knuckle is the big problem. Anybody have any other suggestions??

Try lotion, or ice, or butter, or dish soap. I think we've all been there at some point, and any of those should work. Also, try taking an ibuprofen or something for inflammation, to help reduce swelling.

If this has happened more than once, get it sized to fit you! :wink2:

There are various versions of the "dental floss" method on youtube. I have no idea which video is best, but I do know this method works. We used the tape type dental floss.

If you have a week or so, try cutting down on your sodium intake and drink distilled water. Water retention can cause your fingers to swell up despite the fact you haven't gained weight, so doing this should help alleviate that swelling. Once you've done that for a couple days, try taking it off with some kind of lubricant and it should come off. It's a weight-cutting technique for combat sports that I wouldn't recommend for people who want to lose weight, but in a situation like this where water retention may have caused your finger to swell - then it might just do the trick :)

Run your finger under cold water for a minute or so and then spray it with windex all around the ring. Then gently remove. This works for me every time. Good luck!

Windex works for me. Do not wear it again til you get it sized up. You might want to get it sized up and get sizing beads. Size it to the knuckle and then do beads.

Hold your hand over your head, with the finger in an ice pack (bag of frozen peas also works) for about 20 minutes. Then turn around in a full circle and pull it off with butter.

For some reason the turning around resets your motion skills and your brain will approach the task in a new way. I do this when I can't get my contacts out, the turning around somehow makes my fingers reset and they come right out. It's weird but it works.

Or just go to the jeweler and they can cut it off you.

Thanks for the responses everyone.

We will try the windex solution tonight. Has anyone had experience with having a ring cut off? Since we're getting it resized anyway, would that be the best course of action?

My fingers are usually smallest in the evening so good luck. The Windex works great and I agree twisting it and pulling, nudging it along helps. My rings get really tight in the summer too so that may be part of this. My dad had a band cut off once and they were able to repair it but it was only a gold band. I hope Windex works.

If you have to get your ring cut off I'd take it to the jeweller who will do your sizing/repair. Sizing beads or bars are a great option if your knuckle isn't too much bigger than your finger. There is another option although I've never used it but may have to in the future if my arthritis gets worse - adjustable shanks such as Superfit. http://superfitinc.com/ I'm attaching the link so you know what I'm talking about. I haven't tried them although I have seen one at the jewellery store I go to. Please note I'm not endorsing this product, I just thought I'd throw it out as a option.

I had a ring stuck once and kept my hand in ice water until it was blue, didn't work. Mom had me drink a beer. I don't know if that just made me pee a lot or what but it did come off after that. A jeweler had told her that trick years ago.

My husband had to have his wedding band cut off due to a hand injury where he needed a cortisone shot but doctor wouldn't do it until the ring was off. He described having the ring cut off as "thoroughly unpleasant" but if the tool is sharp, the person cutting off it skilled, and you don't have an injured hand to begin with, he said he could see how it would only be "mildly unpleasant." Good luck! :wavey:

If you've been trying to get the ring off for a while, it is best to stop trying and let the finger rest a bit, since all the pulling and tugging makes your finger swell even more.

I find my rings are loosest in the morning and in the cold, so when I wake up the next day, I ice the finger well (without trying to remove the ring beforehand). If I am a little bloated, I might take some hibiscus tea as well since it is a diuretic.

Any news? Did the ring come off?

When my ring was stuck, I used a combination of solutions I found on the Internet. My finger was already very swollen from my first removal attempt and so I gave it a few days to settle down. I then covered it in Preparation-H, soaked it in an ice bath, tied floss around it, covered it with saran wrap, and had my OH rotate it off (as opposed to just pulling) with Windex and brute force. It did the trick, but I'm not sure if it was one of those things or a combination of all of them that worked. Good luck!

Nothing has worked. And so far, none of the attempts have been particularly close either. I'm pretty dumbfounded as to how difficult this has been, considering the ring slid with relative ease (and some lotion) and it's basically just stuck because of the knuckle. I don't know if I'm going to continue trying, since I really don't want to fracture a bone or sprain my finger badly.

@mogster, may I ask whether the ring was stuck the entire way through or just because of the bone at the knuckle? All the videos I have seen of people removing rings with various methods, it seems their fingers are pretty even throughout and its different from my situation. My ring fits fine at the base of my finger (does not cut off circulation or even feel tight), but it's very tight near the knuckle.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7aYgJT1W38M looks like it will work.

This is basically the method I posted earlier, with the addition of elasticity in the thread. You can buy transparent elastic tape at Joann's or any store that sells sewing supplies - OR - you probably already have some in your closet, since it's often used as "hanger straps" in cardigans etc to help clothing stay on hangers. I have seen this method used in a very difficult situation and I know it works. Personally, I'd combine this method with packrat's mother's beer method - just because! :wink2:

As an alternative, a friend of mine went to her local fire station (she happens to live just a block from one) and had them cut her 30-ish year old engagement ring off. Why the fire station? I have no idea, but it got the job done. The ring was apparently in fine shape and she was able to have it re-sized to fit afterwards.

Tried that technique also, didn't work.

We actually just took it in to our jeweler and he was able to cut it off. We had to get it resized anyway. I'm glad we didn't do anything drastic and just yank the thing off.

Thanks everyone for your responses.

I am glad you got the ring off. I am sure the jeweler will fix it like new.
