I am not sure if this is the appropriate forum, but since it is the general place to go, I decided to post it here.

DH has never worn any jewelry before his w-band and we have only been married for 2 months. He is getting a rash-like abrasion on his ring finger under his ring. We were married and honeymooned in South America and stayed in modest accommodations, so when it first happened, he figured it was from unsanitary conditions. He went a couple days without the ring, it went away, we thought all was solved.

Within a few days of re-wearing, it happened again. This time he went to the doctor for metal allergies and was tested. His ring is palladium, which we got specifically because I have severe nickel allergies and palladium is supposedly the most hypoallergenic metal from what he researched. His results said he was not allergic to palladium, nickel, gold, or platinum. He kept the ring off for a couple days and used a topical ointment. Now, though, it is happening again. No real big deal--just some minor abrasion and redness, but he is worried about it.

He is a little fidgety with it, but he doesn''t think that is what is causing it. He also was between sizes and ordered the half-size versus the whole-size since the band didn''t come in quarter-sizes.

Any suggestions on what to do? A different size? A different metal? Just toughing it out? Trying the other hand? Has any one else or their partner experienced this?

I want him to be comfortable in his ring, and we both want him to have one. I joke that he is just allergic to marriage, but I would like to try other options first

TIA!

How thick is the band? Originally my husband had a 5mm white gold band, he wore it with no problems but didn''t like that it was getting scratched up. We then ordered him a tungsten band since they don''t scratch. That band was 8mm thick and within a few days he developed n itchy bumps rash where he wore the ring. I figured it might just be from sweating since that happened to me wearing my class ring. We got him a 6mm one instead and it''s much better. He will still get agitated if he wears it 24/7 so he doesn''t wear it to bed and usually takes it off if we are home. Since then, no problems. I will also mention that this ring is pretty loose and he will still get the rash if he wears it all day.

My DH got a rash / irritated skin under his ring at first as well. Especially since he isn''t allergic, it may be that his skin needs to get used to wearing a ring and it could go away. For my DH who bartends so has his hands wet a lot, it took a month or two to totally clear up and go away. He also took it off sometimes at home instead of wearing it 24/7. He should be sure to really dry under his ring when he washes his hands, water sitting next to the skin will definitely cause irritation.

So maybe it''s just newlywed ring rash!

I have the exact same issue -- palladium wedding band, red itchy rash that looks looks an abrasion. I''m allergic to the hand soap used in most public restrooms and will get a rash if any gets stuck under my ring - this happens even when I rinse extremely well, so most of the time I either don''t use soap (yes, gross, I know) and just wash really well or I try to keep any soap away from my fingers.

I''ve had this happen with both a 14k wg band and the palladium band, but not with rings that are more open or have really thin shanks. It only takes one accidental exposure to the wrong soap and my finger will be unhappy for a few weeks. I have a cream that my allergist prescribed that works really well, but can''t find it and don''t remember the name. I''ll look for it tonight...

Maybe ask him to take the ring off before he washes and drys his hands and then put it back on?

I''ve had a rash before under a ring I wear daily and it most likely from having moisture under the ring after washing my hands. I also started takeing the ring off too sleep to give my finger a break.

Yupp, it''s probably moisture getting stuck between the ring and his skin, and that''s what is causing the irritation. This happened to DH on our honeymoon (Barbados, so pretty humid) and then it wouldn''t go away when we got back - we figured out that DH was working out every day or playing golf. When he stopped wearing the ring when he did any "sweaty" activities, he stopped getting the rash.

I tend to get a rash under rings (especially wider bands, like a men''s wedding band would be) if I was my hands and don''t dry under the ring. I make sure to always pull my rings up to my knuckle and dry under the band a bit.

I get it, from industrial soap.

I have sensitive skin, and I have to remove my rings, wash, and then thoroughly dry - otherwise I''ll get that. Neosporin cleans it up though, once it is irritated.

My husband aslo gets this type of reaction under his ring. It''s from the moisture--my husband''s skin is senstive to moisture, so when he washes his hands the water gets trapped under the ring and the rash forms. I know that probably doesn''t help you, I''m sorry. My husband stopped wearing his ring, which isn''t the solution you''re looking for.

I agree with the others. My husband gets a sore patch under his ring sometimes due to handwashing and not drying his hands properly.

Thank you SO MUCH to asscherhalo_lover, missrachelk, tsavvy, 4ever, Elmorton, elrohwen, tlh, NewEnglandLady, and Maisie !

It is great to hear that it is likely just a small reaction. He is going to start taking it off when he washes his hands and keeping it off for a few minutes to make sure his skin dries. After that, we might try a smaller mm ring, but it sounds like the hand washing is going to do the trick! THANKS, again, much appreciated!

I am a little late and I hope that you get a chance to see this. I agree with everyone else that it is moisture under the ring. I have heard that it happends more with the comfort fit bands. My hubby tends to get hives all over his body for a reason that we haven''t yet figured out.

His w-band is completely flat on the inside and is pretty loose. It is made of titanium and he has not had one problem. This is his ring. Pretty inexpensive. I got him this one so that if it gets ruined at work it isn''t a huge loss and it has been great. You could try it and if it doesn''t work you aren''t out alot of $$

This happened to my husband too!! At first we thought he had put the ring on while it was hot and gotten burned. It is platinum, so we knew it wasn''t an allergic reaction. The jeweler said it was probably a bacteria build up. So, now he just drops it in jewelry cleaning solution every few days. It took a while to clear up though. It almost looked like we branded the wedding band onto his finger. He he

Radiantquest, DH''s ring is comfort fit. I really appreciate the link because, as you say, at that cost we really could get it just to try. Plus, I think DH would really like the ring your husband''s ring, style wise, too. Thanks!

And, ndpwood, I bet it honestly hasn''t occurred to him to clean his ring, even though he knows I clean mine every day. I will suggest that he should clean it!

Thanks, again!
