I am just canvassing opinion as to what folks thought of his performance last night? As a Brit I do appreciating that type of humour and biting sarcasm, but from news reports I have seen some people were not too impressed

Americans are wussies. This was the first year I'd watched the GG's in a while and I thought it was fun and refreshing. There's far too much ass kissing at awards shows when we all know actors/actresses aren't perfect.

I think you need to cater to your audience and though I did not watch the whole show yet the bits I did watch showed his performance falling flat. I admit he is funny but perhaps a bit too caustic for the audience in attendance and therefore he did not get as many laughs as he could have had he given more care to that fact.

Quite frankly...I laughed at all of his jokes!! I laughed quite a lot at some of them!

There are some hosts that cater to the audience (meaning the stars) and others who cater to the viewers. RG was definitely not pandering to the former, so the viewing public probably liked him. I did think he was a bit over the top, but I only saw the monologue on the news.

Jon Stewart and Chris Rock are two other hosts that got the same kind of criticism (as far as catering really only to the viewers and making the "stars" uncomfortable). I'm not sure what these producers really expect when they hire comedians who really aren't in the inner circle for these gigs. I think that's why it's said that Billy Crystal does a great job with humor and making the stars feel comfortable, because he's one of them (same goes for Steve Martin, I think.)

I think Ricky Gervais is one of those comedians that people either love or hate. I find most of what he does to be very funny and clever. Its usually different from what you would expect. I've dragged friends out to his movies and most of them aren't really impressed.

He didn't do it for me. Not because I didn't understand him or his humor, he just didn't capture my attention at all.

I think Ricky Gervais is a dark genius who has absolutely NO sacred cows--and his final joke on himself shows that. I enjoy him even when he makes me squirm.

I wish they had Graham Norton hosting the GGs. That would have had me rolling on the floor.

Now that I would love!!

I'm an American and I though he was freakin' hilarious!!!

I saw him at last yr's GG too..thought he was funny then. Last night ehhh not so much. He had some funny lines but then it fell flat for me. Felt like he was just reading the joke and trying to be funny just to be funny. I thought he's been better in the past. BUT the entire GG wasn't great..so maybe I was just not impressed with most of the show. I did LOVE the standing O for M. Douglas.

I love Ricky Gervais, and have since The Office (UK). He's a master of subtle comedy, which came out a little between the (meh) jokes last night. I didn't watch a lot of the GGs, but what I did see I wouldn't consider over the line. I mean, which comedian hasn't made the exact same RDJ joke? And RDJ seemed to take it pretty well.

Loved every moment with him!

I liked it.

Loved it. Yes some comments, I went :o But he tells it like it is, and I like that!!!

I appreciate that he doesn't take himself too seriously- and he is EXACTLY what an awards show needs. I mean.. gawd... sometimes the award winners are so pretentious and just annoying... it makes the show BORING. So Kudos to him for going out in style (assuming he won't be hired again...)

I thought it was hilarious but I love Ricky Gervais. I see why it shocked people though, it was way beyond what the GG are used to!

I definitely second Graham Norton to host next years show! That'd be hilarious.

I agree! I love him.

I liked what I saw of his performance. I find him hilarious.

I actually feel bad for him. My dh & I watched it last night & not sure if it was an act or not but some of the actors seemed pissed at him.

I didn't see the GGs but he was interviewed today (I think) and he said that he won't be hosting that show anymore. He said that two years was enough. From what it sounds like, he might not be asked anyway.

Apparently the head of the show, or the head of the committee who votes the on the awards, felt he was in poor taste.

I have to say, don't shun me, I tend to agree.

I actually really enjoy comedy that low blows big name stars, like Kathy Griffin. However, I'm all about time and place with that sort of thing. I don't think it's appropriate to wink-wink-nudge-nudge "out" someone on national television, let alone to a room of that persons friends and coworkers.

Loved it in that squirmy "I can't believe he said that" sort of way.
My whole family have loved Ricky G for years and listen to his pod casts as well which are very acerbic.
He certainly polarises people but i think he is a genius!
