My husband and I have our car and renters insurance through Allstate. We live in Ohio and got a discount for having multiple vehicles and multiple policies with the same carrier. No problems so far and the rates are good too.
I would recommend getting it from the same place as you get your car insurance. They will usually give you a discount if you get both.
For example, my car insurance is $1500/year. The renters policy was $200/year, but it also came with a 10% of the car insurance discount. So, net, it was only $50 more a year than the car insurance on its own.
I also had allstate, but I think most car insurance places do both. AAA is also good.
I also have Allstate for both car and renter''s insurance. The renter''s policy cost about $10/month for $20K in coverage and identity theft protection when I was living in the ''burbs, but it''s a little higher now that I''m in the city. Definitely worth it, IMO. You should be able to compare estimated quotes online for most of the major insurance companies to see who will give you the best deal, then contact a local agent for a quote specific to your situation.
I get mine through USAA, which is the company I get my car insurance and jewelry insurance from. I don''t know exactly how much $ it is because I pay one bill a month for all of it, but it''s not much and it covers our computers and everything. Well worth having!
I use State Farm--they have ALL our policies--homeowners, cars, life insurance, jewelry rider, etc. I used them for renters insurance before buying a house, and they are really reasonable. It was around $12 per month. I personally wouldn''t move into any dwelling without having insurance of some type. Learned the hard way from a friend who had massive water damage in her apartment. The dwelling was covered by the owner, but none of her contents were. It was a naive mistake she made that taught several of us the importance of insurance. Check with your auto insurer first. I am sure they can cut you a better deal. Good Luck!
We have State Farm as well--we were surprised when we did the appraisal at how much the stuff we have added up to! Make sure you sit down and think about everything you''d have to replace if something happened. A lot of times it''s more than you think.

It depends on which state you live in. We are in California and Allstate has by far the best coverage available. State Farm''s product is fairly good in most states. AVOID anything labeled as Balboa Insurance/Countrywide Insurance. Trust me on this. They don''t pay for "mysterious disappearance" - if something is stolen from you you have to provide a police report and most times they reject them. Don''t ask me how I know this...
You want to make sure you have enough coverage, and that it is the right kind of coverage. A general rule of thumb is that you need $10k in coverage per bedroom, a bit more if you have lots of spendy A/V or computer equipment. Most Renter''s Policies do not cover fine art or collectibles so keep that in mind.
I have State Farm as well. I have them for both auto and renters, and like others have said, I get a discount for having them both through the same agency. I''ve been happy thus far!
Go through whoever has your car insurance if possible! I have Allstate, and when I first got my renters insurance, the discount on my car insurance was so much that it was actually CHEAPER to get the renters insurance than to not. Of course, now that I''ve added my ering/wband to the renters insurance, it''s more...
thank you everyone!! I think im gonna have my FF call his auto insurance because his is ALOT higher than mine and he''d get a better discount than I would.. Also about putting your ering on there... Could we put that on there too??
I dont know what insurance i have (i just did the recomondation of the complex) but DO remember to ask if the insurance covers personal property damage AND apartment property damage. I had a neighboor who accidently set off her sprinkler and the insurance did not cover the apartment property damage - just their own personal stuff.
