So I am moving on August 22nd. My husband is already in our new city and I am a nanny, so I am living with my employers so that I can train the new nanny and help the ease the children into the transition. When I wrote my resume, I asked everyone which address I should use. Everyone felt I should use my husband''s address because this is just a temporary situation and it is not my home.

But a few days ago I had an awkward phone interview situation. The interviewer asked me to come in for and interview and I responded that I would be happy to fly down. Then she got really annoyed with me because she obviously hadn''t read my cover letter and didn''t realize I was OOT. She acted confused as to why I would want to fly there just for an interview, and then told me should would think about it and get back to me. So I lost the interview... I feel bad because I am not trying to mislead or confuse anyone, I am simply trying to line up a job before I officially move.

So should I use my employer''s address until I actually move down there? It just feels funny because it''s not really my home.

Sorry to hear you missed out on the interview due to a misunderstanding.

I would list both on the resume--where you are now as Current Address and your husband's as Permanent Address. That way potential employers know how to contact you. Too often cover letters are barely skimmed, so much of the information there is missed.

My husband is a career counselor at a large university and said this:

1) use your new addy (two will be one too many on your resume-use your new one otherwise, many will be turned off from the start that you don''t live nearby!)
2) do not mention that you need to fly UNLESS you are hoping they foot the bill...in this economy, many are not.
3) when you get to the interview, if it comes up, then you can casually mention this was a relocation, and that you are almost fully settled!

I asked my HR hubby and he said the same thing as UCLABelle.

p.s. You are moving to OC, right? Thats where I am. If you''d like, get my contact info from Gypsy and I can show you around!

I definetly am not a career counselor, but would imagine if I was ever in the position to hire a nanny that there would be tons of applicants. I''d never pay to fly someone down when a stack of resumes of skilled and appealing applicants were right in front of me. IMO, maybe just wait until you move to find a new position. That is if you can financially afford to lose a bit of income while out of work for a short span.

Best of luck!

I was just in this situation, Mia. What I decided to do was put both my addresses, with a note at the top, such as "before July 1: address" and "after July 1: address." I also had my email address and my cell phone number listed (which weren''t going to change once I moved). I did make sure to note that I was in the process of relocating to the area and that I would be very happy to fly down for an interview if needed.

I tried to show you but the formatting didn''t work, but my name, email, and phone number were centered. The "before" address was on the left and the "after" address was on the right of the page.

Good luck on your job search!

I should have noted that this is not for a nanny position. It''s a position as a behavior therapist, although also not the type of job where they''d pay to fly me out, but I''m perfectly happy to pay myself. That is another reason why everyone I know is telling me to put the new address, so that they don''t have to wonder if I am expecting them to pay.

Thanks everyone for your input.

UCLABelle and EricaR- Thank you so much for asking your husbands! I guess my mistake was telling her I needed to fly down after she had offered me an interview. She wanted me to come in the next day so I stumbled a little. I can easily fly down, but a little notice would be great to save money on the flight.

EricaR- That was so sweet of you to offer to show me around! As soon as we are settled I will definitely take you up on that offer!

I was also eyeing the OC GTG thread but I''m not really sure of my schedule yet.

Jet2ks and ZoeBartlett- Listing both addresses! Never thought of that! That''s probably what I should have done from the beginning... Now that I am getting closer to moving I think I''ll just stick with the newer one though.
