Refund - when an item is sent out, or on receipt?

Ugh. So, I ordered a ring from Sweden. It was described as having one slightly damaged stone. Instead, over half of them are badly pitted or abraded. I want to return it.

The dealer says, sure - but she's planning to go to Japan at the end of the month, so I should ship it there, and she won't refund my money until she receives it. Having never shipped to Japan, I'm leery ... and having always gotten my money back basically on notifying them of the decision to return, leery twice over. Does this sound weird to you guys? Or is it just the way things are done now?

P.S. - Bought through Etsy, paid with PayPal, so I have 45 days (well, 36, at this point) to open a formal dispute.

I'm sorry, I'm not familiar with their policy. Can you call them and ask them how you should proceed?

I've only ever gotten (and given) refunds on receipt.

Ditto. But I wouldn't be comfortable sending the ring to a different country. I would tell her you'd prefer to send it to Sweden and you'd like your money back ASAP. If she won't agree, I would open a dispute.

This. Return to the address it came from. If that doesn't work... file a dispute.

This is through paypal. From selling on ebay, i know that a seller is only protected if an item is sent to the buyer's address listed on paypal at the time of the transaction. And I would think that would hold true for sending it back. If you return it to a different address, it could negate your protection. And then she could claim she never received it.

I would call paypal and verify.

The Queen of Tardy Responses thought it would be nice to come back and thank all of you - and, seriously, thank you! Your advice gave me the info I needed and the gumption to stick to my guns. We must have gone back and forth, like, a dozen times with me politely saying, "No, I am not comfortable with that ... or that ... or that ...." until she finally just said, fine, return it to me at the original Swedish address with full insurance. I will admit, I was on tenterhooks until it arrived, but once it did - inside of five days - she refunded my money immediately. No bad blood, and no acrimony (given that the one time I disputed something on eBay because it never arrived the batshit insane seller was messaging me up to a year later bitterly resenting the fact that PayPal had ruled in my favor ... not to be underestimated!!!). So the next day I went and got what I should have gotten in the first place. :)

See, I've been craving a dash of red for my right hand. I watched Demelza's pretty deco band with the french-cuts alternating with boxed diamonds come and go (it was, like, half a size too small, and I am glad I did not buy it and try to squeeze into it like a lady trying on a pair of pants from high-school, but ... PRETTY!). And then I was so tempted by this pretty piece, with ruby cushions alternating with diamond rose-cuts, but ... too much damage. So, I just admitted that what I REALLY wanted was the all-ruby band of french-cuts in platinum that I'd tried on last year. Pricier than either of the latter, but as Mrs. Salvo says in her tag-line ....

Congrats on the successful refund!

Piiiiiics? :naughty:

Your wish is my command - at least insofar as the iPhone can accommodate. A proper photo shoot will come when I'm back in my home, gods willing this week. I am so TIRED of hotel living, aiiiii.

Stack of: my two and a half carre band, the new frenchie ruby band of approximately two carats, my pretty 1.8 mm orange blossom spacer, and my two and a half carat anniversary transitional; ollicliptacular!

And one more for fun ....

I'm going to die!!!! That's my dream band!! Gorgeous! Congrats!!

Do I remember that you had a ruby baguette band too?

I only give on receipt, but I would contact paypal if the return addy isn't a verified one and see what their policy on that is.

Aw, thanks RoseBloom! Answer is, yep! Which I adore, which is hanging out with my wedding band on the other hand:

They're both breathtaking.

I've been drooling over this one:

Did you consider it during your search? Of course the price is higher than I'd like but it seems to have potential.

(Realistically I'm not looking to purchase now - I have another project in line first - but it's never too early to waste countless hours trolling online, right?)

Oh, perfection!

Wishlist updated :cheeky:

I LOVE that one, and I went back and forth on it, but I really wanted really tiny tables and really tall crowns. It's funny, you'd think given the popularity somebody would start cutting them like that again, even if it is costlier in terms of rough, but as far as I can tell ... nope, you gotta go full-vintage to find that kind. Bah!

This, though ... http://www.ebay.com/itm/Band-Weddin...s_with_Diamonds_Gemstones&hash=item20c2d2e445

Picture me biting my knuckle. Would have been at the top of my list if, a) the recent experience hadn't turned me off shipping, b) I wore more green, and, c) I had Scrooge McDuck's money-pit.

And this guy, in red ... http://www.ebay.com/itm/Band-Weddin...s_with_Diamonds_Gemstones&hash=item20c2d2e422 . Seriously, I think this might be the beginning of an addiction ....

Um.

::blinkblink::

You guys are a BAD influence on me.

Because I was looking on eBay? For other examples of pretty high-crowned frenchies?

And LITERALLY FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE TWO YEARS I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR A FRENCH CUT BAND I FOUND ONE FOR A DECENT PRICE.

IN MY SIZE.

So I, ah, may have bought next year's anniversary present about 11 months early. Estimated at two point two carats.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That french cut band is gorgeous. Go for it! :appl:

Oh, that sucker is paid for! I am LITERALLY hyperventilating here. A french-cut band was one of the only things left on my wishlist, and I was honestly starting to believe I would never find one at a price I was willing to pay.

I may actually have it engraved "GEORGE" on the side for when I hug it and squeeze it.

Yay!!!!!!! I have a daily eBay alert for "French cut" and was drooling over that one earlier! I'm so glad you bought it! Fantastic find!!!

Btw, I'm a 7.5 if you happen across another perfect French cut ruby band in platinum... :)

whoooooaaaaaaaaa! Congrats!!!

Heheheh - duly noted! You are directly responsible for my making the find - I LOVE you! In a non-creepy way, of course. :naughty:

Well I've been a huge huge huge fan of your jewelry for a few years now although I just started posting a few months ago. Your pear pendant is divine. So I love your jewelry and love that I happened to help you stumble across your next piece!

Oh, I love your ruby band! It is better than either of the ebay ruby/emerald ones you posted! And the french cut diamond one...well, I adore that one as well! (oh, and I also love the carre cut one......and.....)

Then I hereby call this meeting of the Mutual Admiration Society to order, 'cause I loooooooooooove your AVC band! And I will be more than happy to act as your Official Enabler when the opportunity arises.

DS, I am in a state of high delight. I can't remember the last time one Wish List item came so close on the heels of another. It is, literally, a white stone day.

They would all go so well with my imaginary AVR e-ring, don't you think?! I seriously love them all!

Yohoo, Circe! Did you see this one?

Band Wedding Eternity Ring Platinum French cut Emerald Vintage 1930s Size 6 2

http://bit.ly/TT7Idt

One of my ALL-TIME favorites. Such a beautiful vivid shape, and in such good shape for an eternity of such soft stones! But the seller knows it, too - just looks at the rejected offers. Le sigh ....

ETA: Okay, hilariously enough ... I got curious about the rest of the seller's stock. S/he appears to have a monopoly on ALL the french-cut bands on eBay! Nicely done, sir or madam!

You're right it's like French cut heaven in that store! But yes sadly prices are too high.
