Does anyone have a Steam Garmet/Clothing Steamer they can recommend? I don''t want a large cumbersome unit, but something
that is more compact, yet powerful. I have checked at Williams Sonoma and their compact handheld unit didn''t get good reviews.

Is Rowenta the go to manufacturer for these?

How powerful do you need it to be? I bought a hand-steamer at Target (it''s made by Conair, and was relatively inexpensive) and while it''s not as heavy-duty as professional steamers, it gets the job done and is about the size of a hairdryer. I was looking for something inexpensive and small, so I didn''t really source out steamers, just popped into Target to see what was available for under 30 bucks. The Rowenta may be the way to go if you''re looking for something a little nicer.

I am looking for something more substantial than the hand held ones. I saw a Rowenta one at Bed Bath and Beyond today, but didn''t buy it. It''s a Compact Pro model.
Sounds like it has some "umph", yet small enough to not present a storage issue.

I just ordered the Jiffy Esteam handheld steamer. It got pretty good reviews and for $50...I'll let you know how it works when I get it.

thanks tigian, I''ll be curious what you think.

I have a Rowenta, but it is of the large, cumbersome variety. I was completely unable to find a handheld that I was happy with and it is unquestionably worth the closet space. DH and I use it almost every day.

I got a rowenta steamer for Christmas a couple of years back and it broke the first time I used it! Unless they have changed the design at all, I''d forget the rowenta. I have a cheaper one from Target that works just as well.

I have and love the Jiffy Steamer... it goes everywhere with me. It''s no frills but works well for what it''s supposed to do.

Well worth the money. Don''t waste your time with the others, IMO. I went through a bunch before getting this one.

I have a McCulloch, which I absolutely love. It's was around $100 and works so much better than other ones I've used. I got my first one off QVC- was flipping channels and saw them demo'ing it. I bought it not expecting much and was shocked by how well it worked. It died last year. Okay, okay, I killed it by dropping the steam head on hard tile. I looked at QVC and they no longer carried them but was able to find a new one on Ebay.

I just looked on Ebay. You can get it for $39 with free shipping. I'm almost tempted to buy a back up one for this price!!

ETA: I just realized you wanted a handheld. Should have read the post slower. I haven't had a handheld, but this one is small compared to other full size ones I've seen/used.

The only time my iron comes out is when I need to iron my cloth napkins (yeah, that''s like once a year) and if I''ve washed my robe and the tie to it is all crumpled. Other than that, what an iron??? The steamer heats up in about 30 seconds and does everything. It''s really great on knit items- like little cardigan sweaters or t-shirts. The wrinkles just fall out. This steamer is the kind of thing I''ve bought people as gifts before. It''s that good.

April, it works, then I''m all for it - compact or not ;-)

DD needs one and I do as well. Tired of dry cleaning a perfectly clean sweater cause it''s wrinkled!

Does it have to be handheld? The BEST STEAMER EVER is the Jiffy J-4000. We used it at the clothing store I used to work for and it''s amazing! If you have a decent sized closet it could fit right in there in a corner. Here''s a link to a website with the best prices I''ve seen.

link

It''s $200 but it works so much better than any other steamer I''ve every used that I think it''s definitely worth it! It''s more powerful than other steamers so it gets out pretty deep wrinkles.

two recommends for jiffy, i am interested. the link recommends the 2000 opposed to the 4000, anybody have one? tia!

thanks, I checked that out. it certainly is a possibilty. there are less expensive ones on the same site, curious about those as well.

We also have the Jiffy J-4000 and recommend it. We've had it for over two years now and we've had no problems with it.

ok, I have a question. If you fill the water reservoir, use the steamer, do you have to empty the water after you are finished? What happens if you left the water in say, for a week or 2?
Just wondering if there are any mildew issues or spotting?

We don''t empty the water reservoir and haven''t noticed any problems (ie. mildew/spotting). Our steamer is used pretty much every day, though, by DH before he heads to work.

If you''re not going to use it often, maybe don''t fill up the reservoir? Don''t know if that would help.

I''ve never emptied the water. It''s good to just sit in there..

Another vote for the jiffy, it''s simply awesome and I can tell it will probably last forever. Best $ I ever spent. No handheld I used ever compared.

thanks, sounds like the Jiffy is a good unit, now I just have to find the lowest price!
