Really need dust please :(

I took our new little Mitsy in for her pre spaying blood work and it came back with very high liver enzymes and a very high clotting time. The vet thinks that rat poison caused this in her (when I called her previous owners they verified that they did have the poison in the garage but swore the dogs weren't allowed in there). Her vitamin K comes in tomorrow which is the treatment for the poison. I'm just absolutely heartbroken and scared for her. Right she she is a very happy dog and doesn't appear unhealthy so hopefully we caught it soon enough. Just thinking about the fact that I almost didn't do the blood work, or that I was going to wait a month to fix her (which would have meant a delay in the blood work) makes me feel so horrible That and looking on the internet was dumb thing to do I'm not quite sure how I'm going to sleep tonight ...

I think it's a good sign that she's happy and not showing signs of poisoning otherwise. Hopefully that can provide some comfort and allow you to not worry as much (I know, easier said than done...I have four furbabies of my own and it seems like they take turns worrying me).

Thank you everyone! They aren't doing anything for her at this time as she isn't showing any other symptoms of possible rat poison. This actually worries me that she might have been misdiagnosed. He said that two other possibilities are liver disease or a genetic issue. I will take her back in a couple weeks and hopefully her tests will be normal at that point.

Thank goodness you caught it now, rather than a month later - I completely understand being terrified that you almost didn't do the bloodwork!

I really, really hope all her tests come in okay! Liver trouble *could* be caused by bad food or something, our cat had issues w/ food and degenerated frighteningly, and the meds the vet gave us totally fixed him, hopefully whatever Mitsy's problem is is just as treatable!

This makes me feel so much better! Her previous family was feeding her terrible generic puppy food. Lots of fillers and chemicals she is on a high quality dry food along with wet food to help her gain weight.

Our cat was eating Nutro when we first got him. He was a picky eater from Day 1, and had all sorts of respiratory issues as a kitten - it was one cold after another, and allergies once those finally went away, so we decided not to push him into eating anything else.

Well, the Nutro *wasn't* good for him. And some cat instinct told him not to eat it. But that same instinct stupidly told him not to eat anything else, either, and... we weren't nearly as vigilant as we should've been about weighing him and worrying about odd behaviour. We noticed he'd lost weight, and that he was quiet, but assumed it was just the latest cold... turns out he had acute hepatitis and was hovering around liver failure. The vet didn't think he stood a chance, but gave us prednisone (appetite stimulant) and vitamins and some medications for the liver disease just in case. The effects of the prednisone were clear after just a couple of days - he was eating baby food manically, and I want to say two months-ish? later our vet proclaimed him fully healed. Now he's 15lbs, healthy as they come, not a stitch of residual trouble except for a somewhat easily irritated stomach - raw diet keeps that under control. Just a few months after all of that there was a Nutro recall.

YOU on the other hand have clearly caught whatever this is very early - she's not even showing signs of distress yet! You've given her the best possible odds for good health - and there's no reason to believe she won't be just fine

Thank you again everybody for the dust! I did quite a bit of research on my own and what the vet was telling me vs. what the blood test and Mitsy's attitude was telling me didn't add up. I took her blood results to a different vet and expressed my concerns about her being misdiagnosed. The new vet is wonderful and took an entire hour out of her day just to speak with me at no charge! She agreed with my assessment and stated that aside from clotting issues, Mitsy is a healthy dog. The other elevated enzyme is also found in bones and at her age she likely experienced a recent growth spurt (her weight backs up this theory too - she's too skinny). We are still unsure why she is having clotting issues and have began her treatment for that. She goes back in one month for a second test and then we will go from there on how to proceed. Mitsy and I say thanks

DH hates her sweaters. He doesn't understand that 50 degrees is cold when she's only 4lb (yay she gained 1/2 lb ) and her fur is so short it's useless
