i'm absolutely fascinated with this! two of the eggs have hatched...one left to go. i've seen one of the parents feeding the two and i've seen one of the babies pick at the carcass left in the nest by one or other of the parents......did not take long to figure out that it was food!

I've been watching this too. Yesterday I saw one of the baby chicks sitting by itself away from where the mother was
sitting. I was so worried that it might fall or maybe she was rejecting it. After a minute or so the baby crawled
back towards the Mom and she pushed it underneath her. I felt better after that.

Also, have you noticed how well these guys eat??? Yesterday morning there was a dead bird in the next, then
later in the day a dead critter (rat/squirrl/rabbit?) showed up...then when I tuned in around 3:00 there was also a small
dead fish. These babies should be fat and happy! I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they make it to adulthood.

I have been using this with some of my students. It's really cool! We were able to start a lot of different conversations, just from watching the eagle. We talked about physical adaptations, we compared and contrasted other animals that lay eggs, we discussed how different animals care for their young.... It's great!

Will the other egg hatch? I just wonder because it's been several days since the other two came out... ?

there was one last year to watch from the National Fish and wildlife in Sheppardstown, WV. The eggs were lost in a nest full of snow. We saw a nest two years ago on Daufuskie Island, South Carolina. That was St. Patricks Day weekend, so they must like to have eggs hatched in colder weather than most birds. You have to wonder why they have an instinct to to choose such harsh conditions.

3rd egg has hatched!

these eagles are such good parents: another furry critter has been almost devoured and a small whole fish deposited into the nest.

saw the three babies lined up as they were being beaked under the parent. so cute all three heads in a row...one can actually see the difference in ages in all three as regards hatching dates.

Yep, I missed the actual birth but saw the video this morning. I was wondering if both Ma and Pa sat on the nest and then
saw one fly in and traded places with the one on the nest.

Have you noticed how it looks like they sort of only feed one baby at a time when they do feedings? Sometimes it looks
like they are trying to force the babies to eat. I thought baby birds were always sitting there with their mouths wide
open. Not these babies. They dont act very hungry to me.

Also wondering what it smells like (smell cam?) with all those dead critters up there. Why dont they take the old
ones off when they are done with them??? Who knows, to them it might smell really good!

perhaps decaying flesh is more appetizing.......and it would help the babies to realize this is food and not just more nesting?

bird nest remodeling going on.....there is one large offending new branch which is y-shaped bugging the shell out of the occupant. also, i hear a goose flying by and its making the adult occupant protective.

i'm betting the parents realize that egg sitting was the easy part! the babies are active!

I saw some of the geese yesterday. They were flying low so that you could see them fly by behind the nest. The
adult stood up and hollered at them. The adult seemed really annoyed!

On another note the adult is trying to feed the babies and has a piece of gut that is about 5 inches long. The babies are
like "What are we suppose to do with this?" and the adult acts like it doesnt understand why the babies wont eat
it.

Both the parents are in the nest right now. So cool to watch them interact.

missed the geese! i've heard them and seen the adult in the nest be very protective and annoyed.

both adults are in the nest now......3 babies lined up and being fed by one of the adults.....while the 2nd adult seems to be trying to corral them by moving some of the nesting material around....no, it was making a place for itself to lie down!

the adults appear to be very attentive parents!

Last year Kenny posted something about a barn owl box cam. I tuned in to that and was hooked almost immediately! I watched the mother owl's diligence as she sat on her eggs, watched her nurturing the babies, watch as the owlets grew and Mom and Dad brought in food, and finally... watched as the babies fledged and left the box. I also got to "know" people from all over the world who watched regularly and participated on the social stream - I've even met some of them in person. Many of those former owl watchers are now watching the Decorah Eagles (and/or some of the new owl box cams that have sprung up this year.)

Enjoy your time with the eaglets! I pop in there from time to time too, but rarely when the chat is up and running.
