Question for PSers from the Northeast

DH and I are planning a future trip to the Vermont area, we are planning to stay for about a week.(in one place, a time share) My question is, we would REALLY love to see parts of New Hampshire, as well as Boston, Ma. Is this possible without feeling pressed for time or are we crazy? We are from So Ca, and it takes forever to get anywhere, haha, so hoping for perspective from locals.

No, totally doable. Depending on where in Vermont you are going. Just make sure you map out distances before your trip. Parts of Maine are beautiful as well. Along the coast there are some gorgeous little towns.

Depends on how much you like to drive. Burlington VT to Boston MA is about 3.5 hour drive (depending on traffic and how fast you drive.) Getting to Maine from Vermont can be a bit of hassle if you''re more in the northern part of Vermont as there aren''t a lot of east-west roads.

Killington, is where we have decided on. I will make sure to map locations out before we go, I actually love that part in planning. It would be lovely if we could squeeze in Maine as well, Ive heard its beautiful. Thanks again!

Kismet-Thank you, so if we are staying in Killington, would it be safe to assume that it would be about 2.5 hours to Boston?

Yes, 2.5 hours would probably be about right. It takes me about 2 hours to get from my house to White River Junction.

Killington is 2.5-3 hours from Boston based on traffic along Rt 4 (the main route from the highway to Killington). While you''re in the area, be sure to check out Woodstock, VT, Quechee, VT, and Hanover, NH, all within 15-30 minutes of where you''re staying. The seacoast region is going to also be about 2.5 hours away as it''s in a different direction (East)from Boston (South).

HudsonHawk- Thank you, I was hoping you would chime in, as you are one of the few PSers that I actually remember living in that area. We have Woodstock on the list, and thanks alot for the other city/ town recs. Im starting to wonder if we should stay overnight in Boston at the end of our trip, instead of just a day trip? I mean, there is soo much history and we have never been to this part of the country before. Thanks again!

D and I live south of Boston and spend about 1 weekend per month in NH or VT year-round. This winter we spent several weekends in Lake Placid, NY, which I don''t consider to be too far. I''m not sure what activities you might be looking for, but we generally go up to NH/VT to hike/climb (rock or ice) or ski. North Conway, NH is probably my favorite place to do all of those. We''re partial to the presidential range and hike Mt. Washington pretty often. If you''re interested in hiking, that area has a lot to offer and is only a couple of hours from Boston.

SctBride-If you could fit in an overnight in Boston it would be worth it. The 3 hour drive both ways makes for a long day and Boston has great night life and restaurants.

NewEnglandLady- Wow, once a month?! That is awesome! We are hoping to see some foliage (leafers! ha!), as well as just see a new part of the country. Also, we are quite sick of where we live (So CA) and were hoping to see different areas (starting with the NorthEast) to get an idea of what area we may want to live in the future. I would love to do some hiking if its not too cold for my weenie californian blood in september. Thanks for responding!

HudsonHawk- We could easily add a night or 2 at a hotel at the end of our trip, so I think im going to have to start looking. You are correct that 3 hours each way would be tough. Thank you.

I second (or third?) the suggestion of going to Boston for an overnight or two. There''s so much to do, and it will be a very long day if you try to drive there and do a lot of sightseeing. You''ll love New England! It''s beautiful!

ZoeBartlett- It does seem like ALOT of driving for a week trip to try and do Boston as a day trip. I was able to talk DH into adding 2 days at the end for Boston, YAY! I just told him that we could either add 2 days to this trip, OR we could plan an only Boston trip later down the road. Being the frugal man that he is, he opted for the 2 days added. Which BTW is exactly what I wanted.
