So I''m going to French Polynesia for three week in July. While I''m there I don''t want to spend more than 10 minutes a day on my hair. Normally at home, I blow dry my thick and naturally curly hair straight and flat iron it most days. It takes about 45 minutes on average to style. I''ve found products that I really like, and they help manage it in humidity for the most part which makes my hair frizz up. I really hate styling it in the summer though. So, I''ve been debating between thermal reconditioning and the non-formaldehyde keratin treatment. My stylist (who I''ve been going to for a long time, and do trust) thinks that Keratin is the way to go for my hair type and needs. He says that TR will get it too straight, and that it will be far more damaging.

I did want to do my own research though and have been reading up on the keratin treatment, and from everything I have read I think that after the treatment I would still need to spend a decent amount of time styling my hair. Could you please share your experience/expertise with me? Thanks!

I''ve had TR 3 times, and it was great for me. My hair is VERY thick, coarse and naturally wavy, so it wasn''t damaged at all...but it wasn''t what I would consider to be "bone-straight" after the TR was done. It did save me a lot of time blowing out and flatironing my hair, the time went down from about 45 minutes a morinng to about 15. I wouldn''t recommend it for someone with fine hair, though...I can see where it would be damaging in that case.
I have highlights in my hair now, and I won''t get the TR again for fear of doing "too much" to it...but I''d like to see what kind of responses you get here regarding the Brazilian Keratin treatment, as far as how gentle or damaging it is. I''ve heard good things about it, I just haven''t had a personal experience with it.
Good luck with whatever you do...since I won''t do the TR again while I have lighlights, I''ll be living with my hair up in a clip this summer!

If it''s something your long time stylist recommends, then I''d have a hard time arguing for or against it. He knows your hair best of all, and if he is suggesting this--it''s because it will really work for you.

Now, the only thing I caution when changing the texture of your hair, is that you need to be prepared for the up keep. Just like with a perm or with color...your outgrowth will still be curly, and require you to get touch ups to keep the results fresh. Unlike with color re-touches that run half the cost of the inital service, Keritan treatments can get expensive and something you should consider.

Either way, it will be great. Good luck!

Thanks Italia! He does know my hair, and he's highly regarded in the Boston area- so you're right I should trust him. I think once I started reading testimonials I began to worry that I would get the treatment done and it wouldn't achieve the results I'm after. I guess we will just have to see how it comes out. I'm fine with the upkeep though, it's really the daily styling that I want to cut down on. I mean if it works, and saves me even 30 minutes a day, it's well worth the expense in my opinion.

got2goldens- I'm getting it done in June, so I will post a review and before and after pics for you.

I had a Brazilian Keratin treatment done for the first time in November 2008. By January, I had my original waves back. I followed the directions of not washing or tying up my hair for the first 3 days and used the special sulfate-free shampoo. I was disappointed it did not last longer, although my hair stylist did say it was less strong that TR. For that much money and time, I wish it had lasted longer. It may have cut my drying time for the month of January. Now I''m back to my old routine of just using my hair dryer and straightening iron for now. Positive note: I don''t think it damaged my hair much.

Sap483-thanks, I''m interested to see it. If you think about it, maybe you could ask your stylist if he would think it would be okay to do BK when someone already has highlights in their hair? I''d love to have it done but don''t want my hair to fall off

Tigian- that is interesting to know...I wonder if there are different strengths of BK? I know TR has different strengths, depending on if your hair is colored or not...

I''m pretty sure there are different strengths. My hair was not colored at the time, nor had I had any other straightening treatment, so I think she used something fairly strong...obviously not strong enough. She definitely stressed the fact that the Brazilian treatment was gentle and my hair wasn''t going to be damaged.
