Sending all my good thoughts. The pictures look horrifying. I'm still waiting to hear from a friend in Brisbane, although we did get confirmation that our family is fine.

I hope all of you remain safe.

TGAL I hope your friend is okay - there is a flood hotline however I am not sure if it will work internationally or not where you can check on the status of friends and family - The good news is Brisbane got lots of warning to evacuate before the worst hit and most people I think took it seriously and got out early phone lines are down in a lot of parts so it can be hard getting through.

Kate I am glad your son is okay

- the CBD has been closed down - I am off work for the next 2 days at this stage - insane oxleys on the river has now floated away due to it's location the owner could not get insurance for floods :( scary to think of a restaurant just floating away

Stay safe peeps :)

Anyone seen the Facebook post going around about the Australian government donating $1 billion to the Indonesian Tsunami, $65 million to Pakistan floods but only $1 million to the Queensland floods. I don't know how true it is but it makes you wonder.

Haven't seen that (off to investigate), but if its real... :angryfire:  :angryfire:

Don't believe everything you read on FB, the $1million donation was made back in December 2010, before the floods, the government is providing aid internally in other ways rather than making a direct donation.

I hope all of you are still hanging in there. Still have not heard back from a friend, but hope she's alright.

Love your spirit Queenslanders...it's making news here in the U.S.

I saw a few days ago a statue in Brisbane someone had put on some snorkeling goggles and floaties (I didn't know whether to laugh or cry). Aussies are an amazing lot.
This just about sums up the Australian character TG. Last night we were watching the most harrowing coverage of people running for their lives a a wall of water was metres from them. Their cries and screams were haunting and will stay with me for some time. I wept and felt so gutted.
In the next hour they did a story on Queenslander's resilience. They talked about our iconic Football stadium Lang Park being underwater. Many people wept about this. Out the front of Lang Park (Suncorp Stadium as it is now known) there is a statue of a very famous Queensland Rugby League Player Wally Lewis or "King Wally' as he is known here. The story showed Wally bailing out houses of strangers. He just turned up to some flood affected street and got on with the job!
Then they cut to the statue of King Wally and guess what it had on? Floaties goggles and a snorkel added by some wag. That to me sum up the Australian characteristic. We can laugh through the tears!

Ditto - there have been some pretty awesome stories come out :)

I loved the story of the man walking around Brisbane handing out cold beers to volunteers during the clean up - I turned to DH and giggled only in Australia - gotta love it :)

I love the Wally story! I did see the news report but didn't know who he was (forgive me! Don't follow any sports). The picture of the statue really sums it up.

A local single mother who couldn't afford to make a monetary donation to the flood appeal has contacted a trucking company here in WA to arrange transport of any donated goods that she could collect from people over the next few weeks. I already had a boot full of clothes that I have been dragging around since Xmas and some kitchen and household stuff all boxed up that I was going to have a garage sale with, but now I am going to donate it. Tonight I went through my kitchen and boxed up all non perishable food items I had and then went to the linen closet and stripped it to about half of what I had. My daughter went through her room and picked out the clothes and toys that she no longer needs. Tomorrow I will do my clothes again and my husbands and then on Sunday I will box it all up ready to collected.

There isn't a lot I can do for people in QLD from the other side of the country but this helps me feel like i have done something for them and it feels good to Finally have that linen closet cleaned out too! :))

Just want to say that I am truly inspired by the thousands of people who pulled their sleeves up and headed to the flood areas to help clean up. Makes me proud to be an Aussie! :appl:

Yes it is truly inspiring and I am so proud to be an Australian and a Queenslander even if I come from down south!
Its all still terrible but people are pulling together to get things removed from the flood damaged homes. Apparently in some streets the sewers burst so it wasn't just river silt people were dealing with :((
My son returned home yesterday even though they had no power. He was just so keen to get back and help with the cleanup in his neighbourhood :appl:
I am a psychologist so I have put name down to do counselling at some time but I think I will go up tomorrow and help with the physical cleanup. That is almost the easy part. The emotional clean up will take much longer as people realise what was lost and frustrations build.

Horrible. Queensland is in my prayers.

I have never seen anything like this.
My son lives in Brisbane two streets from the river in a high rise. They shit power off at midnight last night but gave them no warning so he couldn't charge his phone. He got out this morning a few mintes before the main road out got flooded.
He's home now but pretty gutted.
His work underwater and no idea when he can return to home and work.
He said it was just surreal.
I pray for everyone else.
It's Australia's Katrina

Prayers across the km's!

keep well--Sharon

Dust by the bucket load!

You are all in my prayers!

I saw pictures in the news and it was so heartbreaking; you all are in my thoughts and prayers.

As terrible as this has been its really bought the state together as a community. There are so many volunteers coming to help with the clean up that they have had to turn 100's away.
This lady set up a web site to deliver bake and deliver baked goods to feed the volunteers (that's what we call cakes and pies in OZ) and the response has been overwhelming :appl:
