PS DUST seems to work wonders :)

So, I am going to request some for our dog!

He hasn't been himself for a couple of weeks and after some blood work being off, they took chest x-rays today. The films showed a large mass on what looked like his spleen. He is scheduled for an abdominal ultrasound and possible biopsies tomorrow.

We will take any extra DUST you can all spare!!!

What kind of dog is it? A lot of large breeds are prone to weird growths.

Our dog is a fox hound mix-about 85lbs-but has lost 3lbs over the last week! And he is at least 14yrs old-but all the Vets we've had over the years have said he is definitely older(they tend to 'guess' low at the shelters for the adoption ages).

So, at this point we are obviously hoping it somehow turns out to be something benign and easy to deal with---because we do not want to put him through a lot at his age! Trying to stay positive, but it really isn't looking very good-could turn into a really rough weekend!!! :(sad
 
Good luck stepnutcut, I hope your weekend turns out to be calm and uneventful and your little furbaby gets thru this with flying colours - and his 3 lbs back on him! Fingers crossed.... I've only lost 1 pet that was really MY dog, and that hurt like hell.... I hope you aren't facing that yet.

Our cat, Margaret, had a growth on her spleen and had surgery January 2011. It was cancer, but they removed it and she's fine. Sending your pup lots of healing dust!

Thank you all for the continued PS DUST!

We are still waiting for his appt. time, but spoke with our Vet again this morning and she is not very optimistic about the results and prognosis for him :((

The other unfortunate things is that our regular Vet just moved and this is the first time we have seen the new Vet as she has only been there a week. So, I have to keep trying to convince her of things that are normal or not normal for him---it is very frustrating!!! I am sure she is a little overwhelmed, but it is almost like she isn't listening or just doesn't believe us! It is something we really don't need to deal with on top of it all!

Here's hoping for some surprisingly good news!
 
Margaret is a 7 pound cat and she had a tumor the size of a lemon-there is always hope!

Well no good news :( He has spleen cancer that has metastasized to his lungs. The prognosis is very poor with the current treatment options, so we are opting for supportive care at home. We are told that this is a very aggressive, fast growing cancer-so we are taking it day by day. He actually had the best day in a week yesterday-ate well, was able to move around well and was interested in being outside and walking the yard a bit. So, I am sure our time with him is short, but were told that we can have him euthanized at home-which gives me a little comfort.

This is heartbreaking news.

I've re-typed this three times - there just aren't words. I'm so glad to hear that he had a good day yesterday, and I'm praying that the remainder of his time will be easy. He's so lucky to have you and I *know* he knows how loved he is.

I'm so very sorry Stepcutnut - our dog had the exact same illness and situation, except in our case his spleen had ruptured and he was bleeding internally. I can understand what you are going through and sadly I know from personal experience how very difficult it is, so my heart goes out to you. Big hugs to you and your family.
 
Too late to edit my above post but I wanted to correct myself - it was the tumor that ruptured - again, I'm really sorry you're dealing with this stepcutnut, you and your sweet dog will be in my thoughts. ((HUGS))

ETA: I also wanted to add that I'm hoping he remains comfortable and pain-free for the time he has left, and that you and your family can be comforted by the fact that he knows how much he is loved.
 
I am so sorry to hear of your sad news, but it is a comfort that when the time comes, he will be at home with you. I hope you can enjoy your remaining time together and he is happy and pain-free. Big hugs for you during such a truly difficult time.

He seemed to have a pretty good weekend, which we are glad for :)

Junebug-that is one of our worries, I know that the tumor rupture can happen spontaneously-but he is a pretty quit dog, so we are hoping that doesn't occur. Our big debate is whether to worry more about the possibility of rupture or quality of life issues at this point. Obviously more difficult to euthanize him if he seems comfortable and interested in food, water, us, outside versus the worry of rupture. Time will tell, just have to follow our hearts and take ques from him I guess.

Stepcutnut, I completely understand - in our case, we didn't even know our dog was sick until the tumor ruptured. According to our vet, this is fairly common since in many cases the dog just doesn't show any symptoms until this happens. In fact, the only symptoms our dog showed was being a little "off" and moving slowly and not having his usual energy level for a couple of days. Even then, I debated because he didn't seem *that* bad!!! Thank God I went with my instincts and brought him in - that's when the tumor and bleeding were discovered. For us, the quality of our dog's life declined with the rupture.

I think you're right - at this point you just have to monitor him extremely closely and look for any behavior changes. Did your vet give you certain things to look for? I think your dog will let you know when he is starting to decline. For me, the warning signs were the fatigue and low energy. I think your gut will tell you when your dog isn't enjoying life anymore.
