Hi
well we are on the waiting list to get a gorgeouse golden retriever puppy from a local breeder. So being doggy novices, and an eager pricescope researcher, my questions are

- any good dog/puppy training books you would recommend
-puppy/dog training websites?
-any hints / tips on integrating a puppy into the household - she will be a inside and outside dog

what does a golden retriever puppy need / what accessories are useful for training and genreral living

will show photos of the bundle when she comes and looking forward to reading any hints/tips

thanks heaps

Hi,

We are adopting a labradoodle ourselves these days from the local rescue.
It is exciting, isn''t it?
The best dog training book I have ever read is the one by The Monks @ New Skeet.
Google something like "monks" puppy training and you should find the title.
They have such a different philosophy of dog training than most books.

Also, I have a standard poodle, and she is well trained. A person came to my home every
day for about a month while I was at work and it was worth every penny.

Congrats,
Pink

I love this guy, and the way he works with dogs, and I believe almost all of what we see on the TV with him working his magic, is real.

Cesar

But, you are getting a small bundle of fluff to start with! So...read up on the puppy stuff first, and see how the stages of growth and learning go.

It''s a long time since I had a puppy, but we just got a one year old Staffordshire Bull Terrior - who is totally adorable. He''s still at a ''young'' stage/age - but he''s a quick learner!!

Best of luck and happy days with your new addition, when it gets to you. Do post some pictures please, the golden retriever is one of my favourite breeds of dog, just behind the labrador retriever...our next dog hopefully! More than hopefully - we want two of them! Ye gods...three dogs we''ll have then!

Thanks, we are terribly excited, it has been many years of waiting before we were ready to get a dog, had to get a lot of travel out of our system first and moving countries.

We are waiting on a little female puppy to be ready in 7 weeks time - so counting down.

Congrats on getting (almost) your pup!

My advice is to have a bed area and routine set up before she arrives.
Decide where she will sleep and buy an adult lab sized doggie bed.

I love the large kidney/oval shaped plastic beds and throw in a fleecy blanket for comfort (buy 2 or 3 fleeces so you can throw them in the wash when she has an accident). That way she has ''her'' bed from day 1 to grow into.

Buy a large teddy or similar plush toy and put it beside her in her bed. She will more than likely snuggle into it as if it were part of her litter or mum.

I would wrap a small hot water bottle in towels and bury it in the bed so the bed will be warm like her mum.

If need be and she wails at night you can put a clock in a sock and bury it under the bed too - so she can hear what she thinks is a heartbeat of her mum.

My first three commands to teach the dogs were 1) Into bed 2)Sit and 3) Go potty. So if I were you I would start to repeat them around your pup when you perform the actions for her or she does them on her own. So if you put her in her bed praise her for a ''good into bed'' if you take her outside for potty tell her ''good potty'', if she sits on her own tell her ''good sit'' and so on.

Speaking of toilet training - I recommend you take her out EVERY hour. She cannot hold anything as a pup. Nothing!

Good luck.

The book My Smart Puppy by Brian Kilcommons and Sarah Wilson is a great place to start. They also have a website www.mysmartpuppy.com with message boards and articles. The boards are moderated by trainers, veterinarians, shelter workers and other dog professionals. Lots of great advice!

thanks for all the great tips and website advice.

getting very excited.
