Puppies got fleas :-(

Can someone give me tips? The dogs got fleas...I think they may have gotten them when I took them to the groomers to get their nails trimmed. We bathed them...put the drops on their backs...and now they still have them. I scrubbed the house down, washed all the sheets, vacuumed everything, and used this spray for the house as well. Help me get rid of the fleas!

What did you bathe them with? Dishwashing liquid kills fleas, and is very gentle for the pups. The key in bathing them is you need to start at the head/neck and work downwards towards the tail. The fleas will run up onto the dogs face otherwise. Fleas will run anywhere on the body to try to get away, so you have to be very thorough. Make sure you double check by the nose, by/in ears, paws/legs and down by the tail.

What type of flea medication did you use?

Be careful with using too many chemicals on your puppies/in your house!

Poor dears

We''ve had great luck with the drops for the cats, not so much for the dog. A good combing in the bath, and we sprinkle baking powder on the carpets, leave it for an hour or so, and vacuum it up, seems to help.

Make sure to take puppy out of the room when you''re sprinkling powders, though, and vacuum well afterward - you don''t want them breathing that stuff

Flea Fogger. There''s a fair amount of prep work involved (like covering the toaster, hiding all food related items, turning off pilot lights) but it will rid them. Oh, and you and your dogs have to leave the house for like four hours.

Thanks for the tips! I used frontline the first time, but DH did it, and I''m not sure if he did it correctly. So today, we vacuumed EVERYTHING, used the baking powder, and then washed them in a mixture of all-natural dish detergant and a mild flea shampoo. There is no way a flea could have gotten past me- I scrubbed those puppies! (sidenote- it was pretty funny to watch since i had to do it in our little tub...and those dogs were not happy campers). We will fog the house as a last resort- if the fleas have a resurgence we might just have to!

I went to buy the Frontline flea medication and the vet nurse suggested that if the medication didn''t work their problem might actually be an allergy to fleas. I didn''t ask many questions then about flea allergy and the Frontline did the trick, but it might be worth keeping in mind.
It''s a bit vague, I know.

Yes, if your dog is allergic to fleas (as I think my Jack Russell is), one bite from a flea will send them into itching-mania. Your dog will scratch like crazy, but he may not actually have fleas on his body, it''s just a result of the allergy.

If your dogs are still scratching, you should wash them with a soothing shampoo, (usually made with oatmeal), I''ve noticed it helps my dogs a lot.

Make sure you treat the house thoroughly!

One of our kitties got fleas, and we treated her and not the house properly. A month later, all the little eggs that had been laid in the carpets etc started to hatch and there were flease all over. It was shameful, I couldn''t tell anybody or have anyone round to the house. Make sure you throughly treat the house- backs of sofas, curtains, rugs, carpets, gaps in floorboards, anywhere warm and cosy where eggs might be laid. Hoover every day. We actually ended up treating the house twice just to make sure we had done it properly.
