Hi everyone,

I know I haven''t posted in a long time, but I know how wonderful this forum is for working magic, and also as a lurker I''ve seen members come together to brainstorm with SDL about the beautiful kitty she recently "found."

I found and now need to find a home--any home, a foster home, a temp home, a forever home, whatever homes are available as soon as possible!!-- for a small, female, black and white cat, probably an older kitten. My guess would be about 8 months.. but I know nothing about cats. I have been looking for her previous owners, if there were any, with no luck so far. She came meowing to our door late last night looking pretty scraggly and skinny. Once we fed her there was no going back, but she was *famished*, so I am sure we did the right thing. She doesn''t have any bugs that I know of, but I don''t believe she is spayed. I think she is in heat right now, actually, because she is being quite vocal, and she is definitely not hungry/thirsty or injured in any obvious way!

I am in a tough situation because I CANNOT allow her into the house; it''s not my house and everyone who lives here is allergic. My stepdad hates cats on top of that and it''s really rough stomaching his reaction to her hanging around here, even in the yard. The local animal shelter [no-kill!] is full, but I have an appointment with them for intake on July 6th, which is obviously awhile from now. Until then my options are finding a foster home for her, finding someone else to take her permanently, or letting her hang out in my yard despite my stepfather consistently advocating getting her euthanized and being angry that she is around. I can potentially lock her in the shed at night [with blankets, a box, and water], but I feel guilty doing so because it''s obviously unpleasant for her. The alternative is an outdoor rural environment with predators and potentially unfixed male cats to impregnate her. Of those last two options--the shed or the yard at large--which do you think would be more beneficial/humane?

I just can''t bear the thought of anything happening to her. She''s so gorgeous, sweet, and loves to be pet and cuddled [okay, so part of that might be that she is in heat, but I promise she is really great! ;) ]. Last night she slept on my lap [outside on a lawn chair...]. She comes when called [we''ve been calling her "Lucy"] and follows people around sort of like a dog. She''s just adorable. Do you have any ideas about what I could do? Does anyone live close to here? Know anyone who does who might want a gorgeous cat? Please help! I will be so grateful for any responses. I have been posting on the ''net, facebook, etc. hoping to find someone to give her a great home!

Awww Wishful! You are so sweet (and I am happy you are back!) We are flying into the area tomorrow to visit my parents and they don''t currently have a cat (and they usually do) so I can certainly ask them. I''m not sure if they''re interested right now-but I can ask for sure!

Thanks, Neat! Asking them would be WONDERFUL! If I could keep this little girl I absolutely would; she really is just precious and I am quite sure anyone would love her. She probably needs to be spayed and my family is willing to put $$ toward that endeavor to facilitate finding the right home for her if necessary. Thanks so much!

No problem Wishful! I just sent an email to my sister (Boston) and some college pals who still live in the Noho area to see if anyone can help.

If she slept in your lap she''s not feral. She belonged to someone. It''s hard to know whether she''s lost or her family was just neglectful. Having done animal rescue I can''t tell you how many people lose interest in a cat after it''s not a kitten anymore. I would do the shed thing. She''ll be safer there even if she''s not thoroughly happy.

By the way, she sure is cute.

Thanks again, Neat!! You''re awesome! I hope you have a great visit with your parents. Are the boys coming with you?

That''s true, lulu. She also seems to want to be in the house with us, so she''s definitely had experience with that as well. She is just at the age where she isn''t a real kitten anymore, so it''s possible that she was discarded for that reason, or perhaps because she needs to be spayed or because the owners didn''t know what was up with her constant [and a teensy bit annoying

] meowing. She is definitely not from our neighborhood; I asked everyone on my street and all of the ones nearby as well. I have signs posted around town also, and have reported her to the animal shelter with a description in case they get any calls. I will put her in the shed again tonight and let her out early tomorrow morning I guess. I feel badly, but there are so many things that could happen to her at night. I want her to be safe!

Oh goodness, I am soooo in

with this little girl. If it weren''t for the no-pets rental we''re moving into across the country in August I''d spay her, chip her, and bring her to CA with me!

They are. Their first plane ride. I am sure we are going to get the stink eye when we get on a plane with two infants! I hope they are their usual happy selves...

I bet they''ll be fine. At the very least they are sooooo cute, so perhaps you''ll be graced with some passengers who will be entertained by their adorableness and understand that they are little and flying for the first time rather than anyone too grumptastic.

Just a quick update: Lucy slept well last night, I think. I put her int he shed with the door closed so she would be safe [it broke my heart, truly
39.gif
] and this morning she seemed fine. She does have to stay outside, but I fed her and played with her for a little bit. She did follow me to the door and meowed for a good while, but I couldn''t let her in so eventually she got bored. I didn''t see her after that, so after a few hours I went to look around and see if she was still in the yard and I found her in the shed!! I left the door open a crack and she was sleeping in her little make-shift bed. Soooo cute.
30.gif
She looks content enough so hopefully that will tide her over.

Today I plan to put up some more signs and call a vet. I think I should take her in to get checked out and possibly spayed. Money is SO tight right now that I hate to do it not knowing what''s going to happen to her and we did hope to find a responsible owner who could cover at least some of the cost. I will talk to the vet, though. She is just a baby and I really don''t want her to end up pregnant.
29.gif
Stupid, irresponsible people and their pets. It really burns me that she wasn''t spayed already and that she''s so little and thin and helpless. She is just so cute and deserves a nice place to live.

Let me know if you know anyone who might want her. New England is a small place and we live fairly close to VT and CT, and sort of close to NH. We are willing to drive if we have to.

Thanks for the suggestions, LV! Lucy is posted on the W MA craigslist as of yesterday. I will re-post her again today with a different title as the previous post was a FOUND title and right now I am more interested in finding her a nice place to live than finding owners who are nowhere in sight, and not for want of searching.

I called ALL of the vets in my area and beyond today and discovered [yes, I am a bit naive; this would be my first time experiencing even partial pet-ownership as an adult!] that in order to get her spayed I would need to get her a vet appointment and all of the necessary shots... hundreds and hundreds of dollars and that''s not even counting the surgery. I feel like crying. I would love nothing more in the world than to keep this kitty but I can''t keep her here, and I''m moving across the country and can''t take her with me because our new apartment won''t allow pets. I probably can''t afford to fly her there anyways and it wouldn''t be good for her either, I''m guessing. But aside from all that there is NO WAY I can afford all of these shots, and none of the vets offer any sort of discount, all of the shelters are full, and one other place that might have been helpful requires me to promise to keep her forever and to keep her indoors---both of which I, again, would love to do but can''t.

I live in CT. I wish I could foster her for you until you move cross-country. There's no chance of a pet-friendly apartment there? I wish I could take her, but it's really not an option for us. We have 2 dogs and 3 cats, and DH is strongly against adding another pet (he's already compromised with me on the two dogs).
7.gif
Now is a fairly difficult time to re-home a cat too, since it is kitten season.

In Cali, you can trap a stray, have it fixed free of charge, and release it. Maybe there is something like this in your area? Call the local shelters and ask around.

I''m not saying you will release her, but I think it would be a very good idea to have her spayed ASAP if she''s in heat. She will get pregnant.

I wish there was a program like that in my area, House Cat! I called everyone in the phone book and asked all of the receptionists to tell me about anything they knew about. There are some discounted rates, but nothing for a person who can''t provide a stable home, unfortunately. We are also very rural, so the resources here frankly suck, and are limited. Two shelters in the area are closing, and a lot of the vets don''t even seem to be taking on new clients, nevermind providing any free services. Sigh.

Thanks for the thought, LovesVintage! No chance of the apt, unfortunately. University housing gives us rent at about 1/2 the going rate for the area, and they don''t allow pets. We can''t afford the more expensive rent, so it looks like we''ll be living there for approx. 5 years, no pets. I have thought about taking her anyways, but I''m really not sure about sooo many things: getting caught, the ethics of the situation... etc.

I am still calling everyone I can think of, bugging my FB friendlist and hanging signs around the area in hopes that someone will want her. Meanwhile the little girl is sleeping in her temp bed in my shed, but everyone''s talk of euthenizing her is making me a little bit ill. I know there is only so much I can do, but I refuse to accept that as the only solution.

Thanks so much everyone. You guys are keeping me going!

Wishful, that is so nice of you to take such good care of her! I think the shed is a great idea to keep her safe, though you''re right that she really does need to be spayed. Hopefully you''ll be able to find a local vet that will do it for free or a very reduced cost as part of a rescue program.

I also wanted to recommend you look into this shelter in CT: http://www.daws.org/catcenter.html I don''t have any idea what their wait list is like, but they are a fabulous no kill shelter and it can''t hurt to ask.

Good luck! Unfortunately I am very allergic to cats, so I can''t help more than that, but hopefully someone will help you find her a foster or a forever home.

Thanks for the shelter tip! I am calling them right now!!
EDIT: Blah they are 2 1/2 hours away from here and all booked up. I do have a lead on a $75 package with a roaming clinic-mobile that serves an area about an hour and a half from my house one day a week. It sounds like they are crazy booked and it might take awhile for them to get back to me, but it''s something!

I found a home for Lucy!!!!! She is going to live with a viola teacher in a nearby town where she will be an indoor kitty and loooooved and spoiled, like she deserves!

I won''t lie, I am reeeally sad and going to miss her a lot. I''ve grown really attached-- don''t think I didn''t consider keeping her even though to do so would be ridiculously complicated and bending more than a few rules.
2.gif
Many thanks to all of you for chiming in, making suggestions, and keeping me motivated to try for a solution for this pretty girl!

That's wonderful news! I hope that next time a cat chooses you, you'll be in a position to adopt it!

BTW good to see you in these parts again. Where in California will you be, and when will you be there?

That is wonderful that you found Lucy a home! There are SO many strays out there. If people would only spay and neuter-sheesh! It is so great that you helped her!

Another bonafide cat hero! You''re a good soul.

Another cat angel!

She looks like a mini version of my Coco!

Oh thank goodness!

Dear lord, I was getting really stressed out reading this thread and worrying about what will become of Lucy (so many homeless kitties!!!

), and then I saw that you found her a home! YAY!
36.gif

Bless you, WT! You probably saved her life; or at least gave her the priceless opportunity to have a wonderful quality of life. xoxoxo!

Thanks so much all of you!! I am thrilled. Her new owner seems very excited to have her, and very competent. I am positive she will be in good hands, and I have visitation rights!
9.gif
I will admit I shed a few selfish tears when I think about not having her anymore, and I think she will miss me as well. She''s pretty bonded with me and follows me everywhere, comes when I call her [haha only to me, not to anyone else!
16.gif
] and lets me cradle her in my arms and carry her around no problem. She spent most of this afternoon curled up asleep on my lap.

I am sure she will be great, though, and I hope, as VRBeauty said, that I can adopt the next cute animal who comes my way!! Hopefully it''ll be a female Pomeranian...

VRB, we are moving to Santa Barbara in Sept. I am leaving for California to be with Wifey at her parents'' house in Sacramento where she is temporarily staying probably early in August. She will be starting a PhD program in the fall, and my fate is yet to be determined. We just graduated from undergrad two weeks ago, so it''s not surprising I don''t have a job in this economy. Sigh. It''s good to be back here. It was hard to post while everything about our marriage and up in the air, and now that it''s decided and we are still married--at least for now, I hear there are groups planning another legal challenge to try to get them annulled
39.gif
--I''m not exactly bursting at the seams with joy about marriage at the moment, and this site is definitely a bit marriage-centric. But what can you say, ya know? Marriage is a huge part of *everyone''s* life in one way or another... mine is no exception although the understanding about that just isn''t there. Okay, enough on that, sheesh!

Cind11 Thanks! You are so right about the spay and neutering. People are SO irresponsible! I am pretty sure that Lucy was dumped once she wasn''t a teensy kitten anymore, and also because she was meowing incessantly. I guess leaving her was easier than getting her fixed.

Thanks, lulu -- and thanks for the advice about her!

Lorikin, is that Coco in your avatar? Coco is adorable just like lucy! I love her markings, she really is a stunning kitty. That little white point between her eyes...
30.gif
I feel very lucky I got to be her "owner" for a little while.

Thanks to you also, Lynn B! I was definitely stressed out too! My days keeping her are very numbered, so I needed to find someone to take her fast, and that is never easy. Being persistent really paid off, especially with all the help from my online friends and communities-- so thanks!

Right now the sweet little girl is curled up on some towels in my room. I admit, I caved in!! Against all of the rules she is in here with me unbeknownst to everyone else. It might be summer but it''s COLD out, and raining, and my stepdad insists on going outside and roaming around hunting for bats
20.gif
, tromping all over the place and scaring her half to death, causing her to run into the neighbor''s yard. I am NOT going to lose her now right before she goes to her new Mommy! I''ll wash everything in this darn room to get rid of all traces of her, but she needs to be inside. I''m bad, I know.

Yay Wishful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so so happy Lucy has a new home-I was just coming on to post that my parents couldn''t take her so this is FABULOUS news! Great job Chica!!!

(and the boys did so well on their plane ride!)

Thanks Neat, and thanks for asking your parents, regardless! I knew your cutiepie boys would be fabulous!! I hope you have a great visit back in your/our original habitat
2.gif
. I am going to miss this place when I move at the end of the summer, sheesh! I am still keeping you and especially your DH in my thoughts on the job front.

Hi Wishful!
35.gif

Yes, that is Coco in my avatar. She''s a shelter cat that we adopted from the Houston SPCA on February 26, 2008. We''re using that as her birthday since we have no history on her except that she was 4 years old when she was left by her previous family.

THANK YOU for caring so much about Lucy...she''s very lucky to have you and you''ve done so much for her! Please know you''ve done something wonderful in finding her a forever home!

As for your move, best of luck with that and with your marriage situation.....I''m sorry you''re having to deal with such a thing!

Big hugs,

Lori
