Long story short: DD broke up with BF last month, sold her prom dress and said she was not going to prom. Last week she accepted an invitation from another boy. So she is scrambling to find a dress. She has narrowed it down to 2, one long gown, one short dress. The long one would need alterations (prom is May 14) and they are backed up with alterations and I refuse to search for another seamstress who is able to do alterations on short notice (Oops forgot to mention that dress may need to be ordered so we are saying could be only days before prom that it can be altered). The short one fits, no alterations. I told her to get the short one, but she doesn't know.
which one would you pick if you had a 18 year old daughter (DD is slightly more than 5'9" tall and very slender).

Long dress:

Short dress:

I would probably go with the safe bet (even though I really like the long one). They are both adorable. The shorter one
seems a bit more flirty to me (since its short).

I'd go with the short one, and I don't normally like short dresses. This one is pretty nice, and the key is that it fits without any alterations! Knee-length isn't really that short anyway (assuming your daughter and the model are about the same height, which is probably true if she's 5'9").

They are both beautiful but if she has nice long legs I'd pick the short. Makes a statement that a lot of gals can't pull off. Unless she's very busty I'd consider sewing on clear elastic straps, too. When you say slim I automatically think strapless = slippage!

Good for her to wanting to go the prom!!

I think she would look fab in either. Knee length isn't so short these days. Some prom dresses are like upper-mid thigh, eek.

If she is not sure about the short dress I will keep looking. So there are not regrets.

Second one get my vote, long pretty legs why not?

They're both super adorable, but the top one reads more "sundress" to me, with that palette and pattern. But, if she's more hourglass shaped than straight up and down, that one might be more flattering.

The short one.

The short one and some double sided tape, just in case!

My daughter's dress was sold out when she went to order it last week. She has ended up borrowing one. I am just throwing this out there as a possibility; the dresses never seem to be worn more than once. And, I am sure the resolution went smoothly for us because it was my daughter's idea. If I had suggested she try to borrow one, she would have considered it a bad idea.

I agree. Can you put the shorter one on hold and keep looking until she finds one she loves?

I usually prefer long, but in this case I love the short one.

I guess DD was getting scared so she stopped at the boutique and put the short pink one on hold until I go down tomorrow and pay for it. She said it fit her perfectly and since she doesn't have the weight of a long dress thinks it will stay up.

Princess: thanks I think I will get some double sided tape (I believe the stores actually sells it)

Swingirl: I actually saw the clear straps in Joann's today and bought some just in case I ever needed them (1/2 price sale on lots of sewing notions).

Thanks to: tyty333, jstarfireb, JunieN, LadyBlue, Ninna, suchende, Kenny, Pink Tower, TooPatients, and lulu for your comments!

DD has long legs and I think she wants to show them off, plus she doesn't want to be stepping on her dress all night. She doesn't know if she will wear stockings (she found pantyhose that you can wear with sandals at a Hanes outlet) She plans on keeping her look very simple with the short dress, hair straight with some glittery barrettes, plus silver sandals. She thinks she would have to be more dramatic with her hair with the long dress.I just found out that after she broke up with her BF canceled the appointments she had and can't get anything set up for that Saturday so she will be doing her own hair and makeup. (That'll save her a few bucks!)

I like the short one better. ::)

Short dresses for prom is *in* now...soooo...the short one!

So cute! I love the short one! Actually, I love both, but I bet your DD will be a knockout in that cute little pink one!!
