Hello all, I read about pre-engagement counseling on PS and it seems like a good idea. I figure that it''ll be a while until I can get the diamond and the ring together, so I''ve got a few months. Not that there are any problems but it wouldn''t hurt. Anyway, I''m having a really hard time finding pre-engagement counseling (based on what I''ve read this is distinct from pre-marital counseling) in NYC. I know there are a couple other threads on this topic but they are old and don''t offer suggestions of where to go. So does anyone have any ideas where this is offered in NYC?

Thanks.

What topics are covered in pre-engagement counselling, I''m just curious. I totally agree with pre-marital counselling, we did it, and the advice was down to earth and helpful (26 years ago). I just wonder why pre-engagement counselling is necessary I guess.

I don''t really know what topics. And while it''s not necessary, I figured it couldn''t hurt.

I''m sure you''re right that it probably couldn''t hurt, but if you''re having a really tough time finding it near you, maybe it would be better to wait for pre-marital counseling opportunities?

Don''t get me wrong, I think its great that you want to strengthen your relationship as much as possible, and I''m all for that, but I just wonder if you''re making it harder than it needs to be, KWIM?

I''ve never heard of pre-engagement counseling. But often pre-marital counseling is required of couples who desire to be married in a church, so the counseling is provided by the church. I guess you''d have to go to a marriage counselor if you want secular pre-marital counseling. Just be sure that what they believe about marriage corresponds with yours, such as, do they believe in divorce for any reason, fidelity in marriage, etc.

If you belong to a church, they may offer it there. Otherwise, any "relationship counselor" would be able to offer it.

i''ve never heard of pre-engagement counseling...but my husband and i had to do pre-martial counseling through the church. I thought it was worthless and it wasn''t actual "counseling" just a series of lectures. I can recommend a couple of good relationship books though if you are interested.
