Are you living somewhere you think you'll stay or do you foresee yourself moving in the future?

We're renting so we will move at some point. Our goal is to save and buy a home but I'm conflicted with the whole thing and would prefer to rent in this area until the kids complete high school (younger one will graduate in nine years) and then I would like to move closer into the city. We could always buy, then rent out the house when the kids graduate, however we have HOA rules to follow re: renting and some do not permit homes to be rented out.

Hi,

I would like to move in the future, but I can't sell my house at the moment. A few yrs ago I almost bought a home, but the real etate market crashed just when I began looking. I was saved from the fate of the homeowners who are now underwater, so I'm not complaining. But, I would like to move to a warmer climate, but I'm stuck. Stuck, in my case is not so bad. So much better than being 200,000 under water. I don't really need more room.

Your quarters seem tight for 2 people. If you can expand at an affordable rate in the future, why not?

I've been in my home 32 yrs so I don't move often.

We have moved a lot in the past due to work and various other reasons. We bought this house nearly two years ago as a long term project. Its within cachement and walking distance for the primary and secondary schools we want our children to go to, and a ten minute walk to the beach and shops. We will stay here for at least another ten years.

Danny are you thinking of moving?

Yes I am actually BUT I also want to know if people plan to stay in the same city, state, region, country, etc.

Planning on moving in about 10 years when DH retires to some place futher north than PA. We're thinking about Vermont, New Hampshire, or Maine. Initially we thought we would like to be close to DD (she's 19) if she decides to move to another state eventually, but many o fmy friends did this to only have their kids move again and now they have no intention of following them again.

I have no intention of moving, but DH would love to downsize. Yes, our house is much larger than we 'need' but it holds so many memories and its almost paid off, so we are on the better side of home ownership now.

If I could, I'd pick up and move everything about this house, including the lot we live in, to a MUCH warmer climate ---- I HATE winters!

We're hoping to move in the next few years. We both want to get to a warmer climate, and we already own a home that's located where we want to move.

I have severe allergies; like 20 years of allergy shots. Anyway one of my sons seems to have allergies so if these are severe like mine we might move to another state.

Imdanny, ultimately our plan is to retire in Hawaii; we don't know when it will happen but we are saving to move there. . .

been living here for 25 yrs and have no plan to move anywhere, cost us less to live in our 2350 sq ft home then to rent an 1000 sq ft apartment.

I SHOULD DF!!! Danny, want to live in New Mexico

We are from the easy coast living in the Midwest. When we first got married we moved a lot. Then kids came and we have stayed put for 26 years. I can't see us retiring here, I want to go back east and a little warmer.

We'll stay in this area unless something unexpected comes up. I've lived within an hour of where we currently live from the day I was born. I like this area and can't imagine anywhere better.

Staying in this house or moving to another in the area is a big question. We both LOVE our neighborhood so really don't want to move out of it, but we'd also love a bigger yard (1 acre or so ideally) and a larger (or better lay-out anyway) house. If our neighbors start moving away, then maybe we'd move a few miles down the road. Otherwise, we're talking about some day expanding our house or maybe even buying the house behind us & combining lots so that we can build our dream-house and then have a free standing garage/shop/MIL-suite in the other house. (eh. That last one isn't likely, but we do love our neighborhood and wish for a bigger yard!)

I grew up in the midwest and spent about 5 years living in the mid-atlantic region before settling in new england. D and I thought about moving to the west coast several times (just for a couple of years), but I'm a winter girl at heart and really like the region we're in now.

We bought a house in 2010 with the intent to stay for at least 10 years. If something pops up, we can move if necessary, but the plan is to stay...until we figure out where to retire :)

Oh this is sounding like quite a cool idea! I'd like the south options from December to March, pretty please with sugar on top - but fairly sure you guys would NOT want to be up here during one of our winters! Mind you, this current one has been remarkably decent. Normally, it can average -20C for most of January and usually around -15C/-10C for February. Not much snow either. Oops, I hope I have not just woken up the "bad winter storm Gods" - YIKES!

I'm definitely moving! I am not a huge fan of the city I'm living in now, and have been trying to move overseas for years and I've got a good chance of that happening in the next year, so hopefully I'll be off on my next big adventure soon!

We are renting a new house from a former client of mine but we both really miss the pros of home ownership, so we have picked a community, builder, and blueprints and are planning on building a house again next year.
It's beautiful here, state of the art, but it's not ours and the owner has let herself in a few times to finishing things in the house (she's an interior designer/contractor and she's a tad neurotic) because she thinks we are 'friends' and landlord tenant act doesn't quite apply the same  It's made for some uncomfortable confrontations.
Renting is not for us... we want to be 'el capitan' of our abode, and when we are renting we are not.

I missed seeing this, we are definitely looking to buy overseas in the next 15 years, I have no desire to live here year round at that point. We'd prefer to do 6 months in, six months out.

Exciting, where are you looking to go?

Princesss, I'm with you on the city we live in. I'm not a fan either. Hope you make your move abroad soon!

I want to go north to Virginia ASAP, like, yesterday. I have a lot of varied interests & can indulge most of them there. Housing market & DH are not with me on this, but I'm working on the old man. In 2 years, if he still doesn't want to move, I'm gonna take the dogs & hit the road, I swear!

We plan on staying in the same region/town/house for the next 20 years - we bought our house intending to raise a family there. We will likely start thinking about selling it once our kids are through school and possibly relocate within the region to an area with lower property taxes. I think we'll certainly sell it by the time we want to retire. Whether we completely relocate or stay in the area will depend on the relationships we have in the area by that point. Right now we are most tied to our current location by our jobs, we have a few friends nearby but not enough that we would be heartbroken to leave. But 30-35 years from now...who knows?

We really like where we live and wish to keep it as our home base, but I wouldn't mind getting a small pied-a-terre again in NYC when the time is right. It was much easier to justify jetting in for a few days when we didn't have to also book hotel rooms.

I wouldn't want to do the reverse, however.

I think I'll probably spend the rest of my life here, unless something untoward happens. I love the house, I love the grounds it's in, I love the village we live in and it's pretty central for getting to most places in Scotland. I can't imagine moving through choice. I also can't imagine wanting to have a mortgage again - the house is modest and sure we could afford a bigger one now, but I never saw the point of that. It suits us well enough that we'll likely stay here whatever our income level. It's a cute Victorian cottage, full of quirks and (if you believe in 'em) ghosts. ;))
My plan in the long term (and if she wants it of course) is to divide it into two houses so our kid can have half.

I love the metropolitan area where we live because there are a lot of diversity, job opportunities, and social/cultural outlets here. So if we moved I wouldn't want to leave the area. However, I am looking forward to moving out of our current neighborhood very soon. Things have changed a lot in the decade or so since I've lived here and I just don't feel as good as I used to about the area. If and when we do move, we probably won't leave the metro area, but we'll definitely switch neighborhoods to a more stable community and better school district. We'd also love to live overseas long term at some point. However with my parents living here and aging, I don't want to move that far away right now.

Sounds idyllic *sigh*

Do tell about the ghosts :saint:

We'll definitely be moving. My fiancé and I moved to the city that we're currently in because I found a job here. His new company happens to have an office here, but most of his coworkers telecommute anyway.

We had heard really good things about this city, but neither of us is really loving it. I would love to get a job transfer to a different branch of my company in an area that we both really love, even though they don't have my exact position there, so I would make less money.

So for us, it's not so much if - just when. When we do move to the town that we have in mind though, I think that we'll probably stay in the same area for a looooong time.

I could go either way but I voted move. We have a great place in a great neighborhood but the changes in character of the hood have been discouraging. Used to be all artists and now it is all Goldman Sachs. Where I used to have a crazy old pothead hippie neighbor, I have a derivatives trader, his wife and two screaming toddlers. The Maine coast or the Central Coast west will hopefully be my refuge.
