Hello everyone I am after some much needed advice. I took a trip to Tiffany today to look at engagement rings for my girlfriend. I managed to whittle it down to 2 possible rings.

The first being a NOVO .33 carat, Colour H, and clarity IF. For £2925

The second being a Princess Cut .35 carat, Colour E, and clarity VS1 For £2000

I can't choose between them and where the NOVO would stretch my budget I don't mind paying the extra, she is worth it. My question is which would offer the best value in terms of diamond quality? She loves the simple rings but I know she would love the sparkle from the NOVO. Please help, my brain my explode at any point!

Thanks for any help!

Oh, lord have mercy, please don't pay that much for a puny .3 carat ring!

For all you Americans, the prices he is quoting is $4800 plus for the first one and $3200 plus for the princess! :errrr: Not even half a carat!!

If your girlfriend is so enamored of Tiffany's get a little pair of silver earrings (also overpriced, but at least cheaper) and be done with that.

Please repost this in Rocky Talk and get some help, you could easily get close to a full carat of amazingly-cut beauty for that price.

Tiffany's has a terrible reputation here because they are so over-priced.

Ladies, we need an intervention!!! :wavey: :wavey:

Okay, see the top of this web page? Just under the Pricescope banner? Where it says "shape" "carat" and "color"?

I plugged in the criteria (IF, .3, H) that you have for your stone, and I'm getting $700 (under 450 pounds) for your stone.

Is the setting really worth 2,400 pounds? Seriously?

Not trying to be mean, but with the same money, you can probably get a MUCH bigger stone for your fiance.

Just sayin' . . . .

Or, if it MUST be Tiffany's, for goodness sake, IF is just overkill. Ask to see something in VS1-VS2 and see how you feel about it. Even at Tiffany's, there are tradeoffs you can make to get better size for your budget.

Its true I really dont know what I should be spending! I really did not think that was too bad as looking at other Jewellers (ok their web sites) they seamed to be not much cheaper. I am new to all this and only plan on doing it once. I am aware you are paying for the name but I take it by your reply I will paying a lot for it. Thanks for the reply though, looks like I am back to the drawing board. It seams really hard to find out what I should be paying, I am totally clueless when it comes to all this.

For comparison for the Novo, you may want to look at the Square Cushion H&A stones on the Good Old Gold website. Does she have her heart set on Tiffany? If not, I really think it's a good idea to look around.

Good luck shopping!

Post your question in the Rocky Talk subforum (I am mostly in Colored Stones and Pearls, so I don't know much about diamonds) as a general plea for help. Tell them your max budget and the ladies there will steer you in the right direction.

Or just start a new subject that says "Show me your $5000 e-rings" and they'll all post pics of what you can get. Ask them to tell you where they got them. The ladies there will love it and they are very helpful.

I think what they do is they find a stone that they love, from one of the many trusted vendors, then they find a setting that they like. If you want a plain solitaire setting, a gold one is only about 100 pounds, and a platinum is not much more than that. But some settings are exquisite, take a look around RT.

Hangout is for fun general discussions, rocky talk is where you want to be. They are very honest there, so don't be put off.

If you decide you want something non-traditional like a ruby ring or a fancy colored diamond, then post in Colored Stones, and I will be over there
