Lack of earring wear during quarantine resulted in one ear piercing closing up. Last month I was able to push through it and now the back of the lobe has closed. Has anyone just taken a needle or sharp earring post and re opened up the closure? What did you use? Should it be high school style with ice cubes and a sterile needle and a BFF to do the piercing? I may be too old for that but can’t see myself returning to Claire’s and getting just one ear redone...I’m 62 years old ! I live in suburbs so a piercing / tatoo place is not convenient. Advice? Suggestions?

That happened to me, I just took a small gold hoop and pushed it through. I kept it in til it healed and bathed it in peroxide every day

I also had this happen to me
i managed to find a stud with a thin post and just kept wiggling
You might find the hole hasn't actually completely closed up

Personally if you have the guts for it i don't see anything wrong with a bag of peas and a sharp push
so long as everything is clean and sterilized and you look after it while its healing
It only hurts for a second

If you could get an earring through last month then it hasn't closed up. They don't actually close, they just become tight from lack of use. During the healing process the ear forms a little tunnel of skin through the lobe (or other parts of the ear) which cannot close together because of the skin through the tunnel where the earring sits. I have 15 piercings in each ear that are more than 10 years old & I don't use them anymore, however now & again I will use a couple of other holes & wear 4 earrings in each ear & provided I go with care & lots of gentle wiggling I can get them through their little tunnel of skin. Try soaping the lobe & earring post & be patient with the skin at the back of the lobe because it's just a case of lining the earring up with the exit=)2

I dont recommend hydrogen peroxide on any kind of a wound, as it can be quite damaging to the skin. Bathing the area in normal saline 2x daily is a better plan.

This happens to me if I don’t wear earrings regularly. As others have said, I use an earring with a thin post and gently push it through the hole. I go slowly and use resistance as my guide (if that makes any sense).

I had better luck with mine when I tried from the back of my earlobe rather than from the front!

Yes, I do this too if I’ve left earrings out for a bit too long. You can see where the post is coming through at the front to help guide it, then once the hole is a bit more open it’s easy to put the earring through the correct way.

I'd recommend going to a professional piercer (they might be able to help you put the earring in without actually re-piercing) or a doctor. Even if it's not too convenient, it's just a one-time trip and worth doing it safely and correctly.

I don't recommend any home remedies, but if you try anything at home (like putting the earring in after a shower), please disinfect the ear/skin and jewelry with alcohol. Definitely DO NOT use jewelry that was purchased second hand, etc.

I rub the pieced part and the earring post with oil first to reduce friction when trying to wiggle it in.

Do you have a kind and gentle boyfriend/ hubby/ sister/ bestie or SO that could help ?
I find i needed eyes in the back of my head

I am glad everyone else has the same problem I do. I wear a pair of tiny 24K gold studs the size of the head of a pin to keep my piercings open. Even with this, when I take out these earrings and put in another pair I have a challenge. But my ears were never well pierced. A dermatologist did it with a machine and I could never get earrings in easily.

I use alcohol and cotton balls on my ears and my earrings.

Thank you everyone. I am hoping m teen girls will help me...if I can’t push thru!

Good luck! How did it go? I've never had my ears pierced (I wear clip-ons and screw-ons), so I think you all are very brave! :eek2:

I did it yesterday! Both ears needed the push through! Hurt for a second and the sound of the crunch kind of gross. Wore studs that night and changed into desired lists in the morning. took out earrings and some tiny scabby discharge. Keeping areas clean and dry. Will put in fave earrings and keep them in until all healed. Thanks so much everyone for your support and suggestions.

Now be like me

we have learnt our lesson
Don't let them grow over again

Put in different posts and kept them in so far. Will change to fave hoops in a bit. Just the 12 hours without earrings caused the left one to sort of close up. Had to push through again. I think that piercing was originally wonky and not a straight through hole. Thanks again for everyone’s help.
