http://www.king5.com/news/FDA-says-pet-death-toll-from-jerky-treats-360-169903246.html

Just saw this on my local news and wanted to share with all the animal lovers here.

Snips from link above:

"The FDA now says 350 dogs and one cat have died in the last 18 months, reportedly after eating chicken jerky treats made in China.

An FDA report released this week says they've received 2,200 reports of illnesses linked to the treats - the deaths are included in that number. There is no geographic pattern to the illnesses and deaths - cases have been reported from all 50 states and 6 Canadian provinces.

The FDA says the majority of complaints involve chicken jerky (treats, tenders, and strips), but others include duck, sweet potato, and treats where chicken or duck jerky is wrapped around dried fruits, sweet potatoes, or yams."

"The FDA has been investigating the reports of illnesses, but no definitive cause has been determined.

"The ongoing global investigation is complex, multifaceted and includes a wide variety of experts at the FDA including toxicologists, epidemiologists, veterinary researchers, forensic chemists, microbiologists, field investigators and senior agency officials," the report says.

The FDA says product samples have been tested for contaminants known to cause the symptoms and illnesses reported in pets, and they are now expanding testing to include irradiation byproducts and they are consulting with NASA experts about it"

I just bought a big package of chicken jerky-I think the brand is "Waggin" Train". Louie loves them and he gets about 3 everyday. He's never had any symptoms, so I'm conflicted. I'll probably end up throwing them out.

A link to an online petition within the article mentions some known to be affected brands:

Target: Waggin Train, Canyon Creek, Nestle, FDA & all other brands imported from China

ETA: link to petition article http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/901/169/744/
I wouldn't risk it at this point.

Ugh, how sad. :((

The article doesn't name the brand(s).... Or did I just miss it?

It sounds like the Waggin' Train brand that I buy at Costco for my pupster, but he hasn't had any problems with these treats yet either. I only give him one every other day because he has to work on his figure - we're aiming for svelte sausage  I guess throwing these out will help him meet his target shape...

ETA: never mind about the brand - I just saw lyra's post. Looks like we were both posting around the same time

I'm going to go check all my treat bags to see where they're made. I don't know if what they tell you includes ingredients from China if the treats themselves are made here, though. Why is everything so darned scary?

We stopped giving our pups Waggin Train anything and also all kinds of chicken jerky when this scare started like a year ago - but now Im scared because they love the duck jerky and sweet potato treats! ARG - why cant someone just figure out how to keep these bad things off the market?!? Ive started to think we need to just go back to the old standbys- Milkbones, etc - that dogs have been eating without issue for years.

Thank you so much for posting this information! We have been giving our cats salmon jerky treats thinking that they were very healthy. I know that salmon jerky is not mentioned in the article, but because of your post I checked the label of the treats. I thought they were made in America but on further inspection I see that they are made in China. They are now in the trash!

Thank you for posting this - a real public service message and one I was not aware of. My dogs and I are very grateful. That is a huge number that died.

My cat ended up at the vet from eating freeze dried (made in the US) food a few weeks ago.

All five of mine ate it, only one got sick (cat in my AV). Lost 2 pounds in a month, her coat was all rough and dull and she was lethargic and needy. The did tests and it was impacting her liver. We stopped the food, gave her the meds the vet gave her, and how she's fine again.

We were very scared. I've learned that I have to be really careful. And the vet said to avoid ALL freeze dried foods in the future.

Thank you for the information.

LJL-you can make your own sweet potato treats. Just slice sweet potatoes about an eighth of an inch thick and bake on a cookie sheet at 400 F two hours on each side. Lou loves them.

If I did that, I'd have charcoal! :errrr: Are you sure about that oven temp? Maybe 200F?

Son of a ....! My dog is allergic to just about everything but LOVES sweet potatoes. So, the ONLY treats we give him are the Canyon Creek sweet potato fries. ;(

That sounds very scary!

I'm curious if your vet thought it was the freeze dried nature of the food or if there was some contaminant. I knew someone who dries his own venison jerky and I wonder if that would be safe for cats to eat.

There is a brand called "Real Meat" that makes jerky treats that are made in the USA. I fed my dog dried chicken jerky for years--it looks so healthy and minimally processed. I was shocked when I found out pets were getting sick from them and most of those treats were made in china! Now I only buy treats that are made in the US. Our local pet supply has an entire section because of all the problems with pet foods made in China. If I were you, I'd ask for a return or exchange on the treats you bought and get some that are specifically labeled "made in the US".

Hi Gypsy,

I am so sorry to here about your cat, I am glad to hear she is fine now. :))

I feed my dogs some freeze dried food and so very concerned :(

Was it freeze dried raw (or what exactly about the freeze dried, if you know) that caused the problems?

Thank you for posting this TooPatient- so tragic- all those poor animals! :((

Gypsy, so glad your kitty is fine now!

Petsmart has made in USA Carolina Prime "Sweet potato fries", as well. Try those!

I don't feed my dogs ANY treats/food made in China. Period. I'm also sourcing food only made with north american products, not just made in the USA. We're feeding Zero/G - but also like Acana and Orijen.

That's what I was going to suggest WD. There's been some pet food scares on and off for several years now, and some of it was from ingredients that had come from China, not just end products, I think so that's something to be aware of.
