My poor furry babies got sprayed at 3 in the morning last night! One of my springers, Olivia, like clockwork wakes me up at 3am so that she and her sister can go pee. Last night they were in for a surprise... Emma got off easy but Livi got sprayed in the face and eye... We did everything we were supposed to make the smell go away and tended to Livi's eye. Luckily, they had a groomers appointment that I had made three weeks ago this morning.
But now our whole house smells! Does anybody know any extra ways other than airing out the place and spraying febreeze, that'll make the smell go away faster?
Everything smells in the house! My purse was just sitting on the dining room table and now it stinks!
How can something so cute be so toxic!

AH!! I know that whole heartbreak! we had that happen with our first dog, years ago. Someone suggested scrubbing the dog with Colgate toothpaste (why Colgate and not any other brand... I have no idea!) but we did that and had no effect (other than the skunky/mint smell). The pet store had some de-skunk smell shampoo - bought that, also no improvement. Tomato juice didn't do squat. I think it was just a series of shampoos and time.

I remember how our house smelled as well - it will eventually dissipate, but it's gonna feel like FOREVER from now! The vet just recommended saline drops to keep our dogs eyes comfortable. So... picture putting drops in a dogs eyes --- yah, that went over like a lead balloon... :nono:

YIKES. If you set out bowls of white vinegar it should help absorb the smell. It's worked for me to absorb cig. smoke in the super old used car I used in high school.

Have you googled how to get rid of the skunk stench? There must be lots of info out there. Good luck!

We used a quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and laundry detergent. And it worked really well on the dogs! But we had to make sure NONE of it got in their eyes or in their mouth. But it totally worked. But now what to do about the inside of the house... I can't spray that solution on the furniture... And we heard of a bomb you can use to fumigate but you have to order it and no one around the area sells it. I'm just thinking the house smells and so the girls are gonna start to smell again. If my purse that wasn't touched by the dogs is a stink bomb right now, they're gonna start to smell again after their grooming.

I know if I wait, the smell dissipates but ugh.... I smell it everywhere! I got it in y nose and DH got it in his eyes and nose...

I was thinking about putting drops but didn't wanna risk giving her the wrong one. So just saline drops huh? Sounds good! Thanks!

yup, normal saline drops... like when you wear contacts and they market it under something like "Wet"... just to keep your eyes moist. I think I just bought saline, but if you can't find it at the drug store, then that's a safe alternative (according to our vet - may be worth a TC to yours, just to verify!)

Oooh! I shall try this! I've googled everything I could think of. Rewording things but nothing really came up. It just said air it out. And I was thinking well duh! Who wants to keep it all in!

Oh, I know I shouldn't laugh at your predicament, because it is sooooooo gross!, but that WAS funny!

OH, my, you have my sympathies. This happened to our shih tzu about 18 years ago. I remember the stink as if it was yesterday. Luckily, we realized what had happened very quickly, and locked her in the empty laundry room for the day, until we came home from work (it happened at 6am, right before we both had to leave for work) so the stink in the house was minimal, but if had happened after we left, she would have come right in the dog door, and well, I shudder at the thought!

Funny that you didn't have any luck with the tomato juice, that is what did the trick for us, though the groomer who had recommended it to me clearly had a short memory. When I took Gizmo in for a grooming the following Saturday, she wanted to know why she was pink! Yeah, the regular dog shampoo did not get that out for me.

I'm going to second the idea of placing bowls of white vinegar around the house to absorb the odor, and maybe call around to your local dry cleaners to see if they have any ideas on what might help with the furniture.

We use Nature's Miracle pet products for cat shampoo and also to get prevent and/or remove cat puke stains from fabric (enzyme remover). After reading your post, I googled Nature's Miracle and lookie lookie what I found - Nature's Miracle Skunk Odor Remover! Looks like it got a lot of good reviews for use on pets as well as homes. Good luck!

I called DH and told him to put some bowls of vinegar around since it's his day of today. Hope it works....

We bought that this morning! Hope it works.... I'm at the point right now that I feel like even stale cigarette smell is better than this! And that's saying a lot cuz DH and I have never touched a cigarette before in our lives!

ah, the joys of having only indoor cats!

bad enough i smell it outside the house at times, much less inside on my fur babies.

Nature's Miracle is great on urine and vomit, hadn't thought of it, but hopefully it will work on skunk, too. Good luck!

A friends boxers got sprayed a few weeks ago. She said that the baking soda and peroxide worked the best.

For the house? The girls are skunk free. I'm trying to find a good solution to spritz the house and furniture with.

Oh damn, I hope you can get the smell out. I still remember the time I ran over 'Rosebud'.....

Thanks everyone for your comments, concerns, well wishes and advice!

Here is a picture of the "victims" after their haircut. Victims... I think they may be the culprit! :saint:

Olivia is the one on the right that got sprayed in the face
and that's Emma on the left

awwww thanks! We love them! Livi's snout still has the delicious aroma of skunk and she keeps wanting to kiss et mommy! Haha

Oh... Those pups have the look of "skunk? What skunk? Whatchyoo talkin' about???"
They're so cute and innocent looking!

Mmm.... A waft of eau de skunk? I put that on par with eau de I-just-licked-my-bum, the silent-but-deadly, or the plain ol' burp-in-the-face lines of doggie scents.

Did the vinegar help with the skunk smell in your house?

mostly for the dogs and herself, but she was using it to clean anything that it was safe to use on. Luckily, they have tile floors and leather furniture, so not alot of fabric to deal with. She did complain that everything seemed to smell, whether the dogs came in contact with it or not.

So how did everything turn out with the house smell, YayTacori? While at the pet store last night, I saw an anti-skunk smell product and thought about this thread.

Hey there Mary Poppins! Thanks for asking! The skunk smell is gone from the house but the spare bathroom is still the place of destruction. I gotta disinfect that bathroom but I've been procrastinating! Emma smells like Emma but Livi still has a hint, but only just a hint, of skunk on her snout. I bought a bunch of those odor absorbers and there's like two in each room :naughty: that helped a lot :)

Hi Hoover! Sorry, I never saw this post of your's! Emma has some super super super smelly farts! They may compare to skunks. Or not.... Hahah
