I have a co-worker that does this. We are in those tall cubicles, and she sits across the aisle and three cubes down from me - and I can still hear her. Granted, our office stays pretty quiet, but OMG. Tune it down a little, seriously. It would also help if you could carry a tune, or if I could understand a single word - but it''s all mumbled and ridiculous. She also tries to do it through her teeth, blowing air like she''s whistling but not..."shhh, shhh, shhh" OVER AND OVER.

Dear lord. Get a karaoke machine and do it at home. Seriously.

Do you know one of these people?

LOL! I do it. At home at least. Occasionally I''ll catch myself humming at work, but I''m out in the lobby mostly by myself (nearest coworker is behind me, behind a wall, with a connecting door) so I don''t think I''ve driven anyone batty. Yet.

My dentist does this!!! Actually, she hums more than sings, but she does it continually as she works on my teeth. I also hear her when she's in other parts of the office, she does it almost constantly. And she's very loud. I don't know, I find it pretty annoying and somewhat strange. I keep thinking she must drive her husband crazy! I wonder why people do this? Stress releaser? They just don't realize they're doing it?

That''s how I am.

Nice thing about being married 20 years and having a kid is that you learn quickly on how to tune others out! I guess what once probably drove me crazy I have learned to tune out and stay focused on other things.

Oh, I just remembered this! Once a coworker drove me with crazy with her singing, so I then started to play a song over and over again all day long, just loud enough for her to hear and be annoying (I think the song was either "Short People" or "Shut Uppa Yo Face"). She asked me politely to turn it off or down and I told her I needed the noise to drown out the other noise. I think she got the hint, because she never sang again!

HI:

I am a singer and hummer, albeit not all day long. It is a stress relief, but really I think I am Celine Dion!

cheers--Sharon

Yeah, some of them have no idea they are doing it - it''s almost like a nervous tick. But the woman in my office? She knows. She has been told to tone it down multiple times, but it never stops her from being obnoxious lol.

And dani, I am ok with people doing it, as long as it isn''t ALL THE TIME lol. And feel free to do it at home! Lol I sing at home, too.

LOL - Gotcha! It's not a constant thing with me, I'll just have something stuck in my head, and then start humming it. I'm the worst when we're gaming. We'll be in the middle of a raid, and I'll be humming Verdi's Requiem or something. DH thinks it's hilarious.

Geckodani, I'm sure you don't hold a candle to my dentist! Everyone does it now and then, and that doesn't bother me at all. I do it too sometimes. But I'm not kidding, if my dentist isn't talking, she's humming or doing a "la-de-da" kind of singing. And loud! And in a crowded office. She's a very nice lady, don't get me wrong, but I think it comes across as a little strange.

Hahaha! I admit, raiding does it bring it out of me, too. But usually because we have "battle music" playing with our guild and half of us are singing on purpose to be silly.

Yeah, we sometimes have a jambox set up in Vent, but for the most part it''s just the game (Aion has constant music). And I''m sitting there singing Verdi. Or something random. It''s fun.

That is fantastic!

I used to sit next to a "whistler" who couldn''t whistle. It was that shh shh shh thing and always the same 5 "notes" over and over and over and over. One of her friends said that she never heard the weird whistle outside of work. It must be a stress reliever or something.

There was a girl who I worked with that was a fantastic singer and I would listen to her all day long. The girl who only sang Disney songs, though,

*ahem* my father does this...except instead of singing actual songs, he likes to make up songs about the people around him....he''ll do this 24/7 if you let him. i remember waking up to him singing in the morning at the top of his lungs opera style *I love smurfy in the morning! I love smurfy in the evening!* to which I would reply dad, my friends are on their way over to pick me up, can you at least just sing about mom instead lol

I can only imagine what he does at work...his poor secretaries lol I believe they have actually bought headphones to drown him out but he doesnt mind :) At least it makes him happy!

I know the thread was about singing under your breath but I couldn''t resist sharing :)

Contact your human resources department.

You have a right to not be bothered in this way when they are paying you to work.

Cubicles stink but since businesses are all about money they are here to stay.

Oh. I didn''t think it was THAT big of a deal.
The woman sitting behind me finally went up to her and told to STFU (in kinder words) so hopefully she stops for awhile.

Funnny. As long as he is happy I suppose.

That would drive me NUTS. I have really sensitive hearing, especially for soft noises (think clocks ticking, music far far in the background, etc.) and especially cannot stand whistling. I had a coworker who would do that and also play music in his office (not cube!) that I could hear from my office and it would bug the crap out of me. I would just always call him and politely ask him to tune it down or stop whistling, etc. It became a bit of a joke, so he didn''t take it too harshly!

Luckily nobody I know sings under their breath.

That does bug me, but what bugs me even more is whistling. Once in a grocery store, a guy wouldn''t NOT stop and I was in the store for about 20 minutes and he whistled the whole damn time. I kept running with my cart AWAY from the sound because there is something about the tone that grates on me.

this was me yesterday. Someone yelled across the office, "Peter, I've got Jude on 2 for you!" and I couldn't stop singing "Hey, Jude" the rest of the day.

I have an excuse. I had taken both codeine and sudafed. I was... interesting yesterday. I don't usually behave so annoyingly!

though at least I have good pitch

When I was little I used to do this too...and by little I mean probably kindergarten. Until one day my Dad told me to stop humming or people would make fun of me!
23.gif
So that stopped that...I don''t do it anymore...but I figured out where it came from because my mom does it ALL the time! She doesn''t really sing, just hums...and yes! We do make fun of her for it!

Sorry no real advice to offer...just thought I''d share my experience. Maybe it just takes someone pointing it out to realize what you are doing?

Yep, we having a"hummer" in our office. What''s sad is that he doesn''t even hum a familiar tune. Just totally random moments of, "hmmm, hmmm, hmmm..." LOL!

Do you think commedy writers like Seinfeld lurk on these sites to get ideas for scripts? A hummer or singer in an office driving co-workers crazy?

People who sing under their breath. All. Day. Long.

They must die.

I''m only partially kidding.

Wait . . .

No. Not kidding.

Rofl!

I thought the woman behind me was going to commit murder this morning - she came up behind me and grabbed me, and shook me saying, "I''m going to KILL her if she doesn''t STFU!" I had never seen her so irate. It''s funny how there''s that one little thing that just pushes someone over the edge.

holy hell!
one of my boss'' does this (hums, whistles, or sings) uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugh!
it is beyond frustrating- because how do you approach it, especially if the person doesn''t even realize they are doing it?
it drives me crazy!

the other day, i had the worst migraine in the world, and all i could hear was his stupid whistling! i just about lost it..haha.

One of the owners of the company I work for does that too! It''s really annoying, especially when I''m trying to speak with him about something, or showing him diagrams and tables, or talking about really important stuff, a huge contract I''ve just signed, for example. I feel like he''s not listening to what I''m saying at all! Usually he is, though. He somehow manages to listen carefully and hum/whistle/mumble at the same time. lol
