When you receive a refund from a vendor via Paypal, do you always lose out on the Paypal fees or do some vendors overcompensate you to make up for them? I'm just curious, I know of it happening both ways. I assume vendors regularly charge an amount that is slightly inflated to make up for their own loss of Paypal fees. But this means that in the case of a refund, the buyer never actually gets the entirety of their money back. :(sad

I guess I've always told myself that I can buy and try something with no real loss if it doesn't work out, when a vendor has a good return policy. But that is not true. With my latest return, the $60 of return shipping, loss of Paypal fees, and the difference in the exchange rate, my 'no loss' transaction has cost me about $100. For nothing. :nono: This makes me realize that I need to be very sure about future purchases.

Paypal probably didn't do the currency exchange, so you might want to check with them. Usually the credit card companies are the ones who do the currency exchange. If this is the first time it's ever happened, they may be able to refund you the difference. This happened to someone I know, and she was able to get Visa to refund her the difference.

Vendors do get charged 2.9% + $0.30. They get the 2.9% back, but not the $0.30. Buyers will always get the same amount back as long as it's in the same currency. I think it's unfair to ask them to refund you the difference with the currency exchange.

When they refund the customer they get the 2.9% fee back so they should not charge you for such big amount.

My experience with PP is that when a refund is involved, you are also refunded the PP fee. I don't think you can do anything about the exchange rate though.
