We are personal friends with several Oyster farmers throughout the south. I have even gotten the opportunity to help my marine biologist friend separate the oysters by sex prior to fertilization using a microscope. Was so very cool.
They get more than twice that for their oysters wholesale, though. Smaller farms would truly struggle to survive at 40cents, unless they are in South Florida where they go from seed to table in about 7 months instead of years in colder waters.
We have been actively involved with trying to push legislation in the state of GA for aquaculture and testified at the state Capital. GA used to be a huge oyster supplier and lost it's way. We have 100 miles of ideal oyster coastline that should be being used to generate revenue for the state instead of them all being imported.
