Oscars Tonight! Who is watching? What are your picks?

Disclaimer: Spoilers coming if you care.

I am a movie fanatic, to the extent that I can find time to watch the movies. One day, I will want to watch every Oscar nominated movie before the actual awards ceremony.

I saw Arrival, La La Land, Hacksaw Ridge, and Manchester by the Sea.

La La Land, I get, is in the tradition of the old school musicals. Think Singing in the Rain and An American in Paris. The music was wonderful and the lead actors were charismatic and charming. However...if they really wanted to really be true to the old musicals, they should have dared to make it a happy ending. I do think this will win Best Picture. It was fun. It was good.

Hacksaw Ridge. I loved this movie, but I love war movies, and I love movies based on true events. I loved Andrew Garfield's work and he gets my vote for best actor, of the movie's I've seen.

Manchester by the Sea. Casey Affleck has come far from "TRACER!" I wanted to see what the hype was about, his performance and the movie. It's a really good movie. So real, stark and straightforward. Definitely you do NOT get people chewing on the dialogue, but raw and real emotion. It dares to be quiet. The scene between him and Michelle Williams is especially gut wrenching. That is the scene that stands out for me. Can't believe she was the cute little teeny bopper from Dawson's Creek. I SO HOPE SHE GETS BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS. I think Casey will win best actor, and I get it. I would prefer Andrew Garfield's but Casey's performance is great in a whole different way.

Arrival. I had to watch this twice in a row to get it. And after I did, I kept thinking about it. It was soooo in my head. You know all those movies out there were people who find out about the future and try to change things to avoid a future event? This was the opposite. She was cursed with knowing what would happen, and then had the courage to keep moving forward. Would I try to change history if it meant I might not be a mom? I am bummed Amy Adams did not get nominated for Arrival. So bummed.

Still really want to see Jackie, Hidden Figures, Moonlight, Florence Foster Jenkins, Fences, Hell or High Water, Loving. Shoot, all of them.

My vote is for Andrew Garfield as well.
I love historical/war movies, and he was so good in Hacksaw Ridge.

I was hoping to see Michael Shannon win for Supporting Actor, as he was awesome in Nocturnal Animals.
Alas, as I am typing this, he did not.

Well the ending of this Oscar award show was certainly different. I don't know who I felt worse for La La Land, Moonlight or Warren Beatty.

One of those accountants isn't going to be asked back, that's for sure. It turns out there are TWO copies of each envelope, and a PwC accountant stands on either side of the stage with a full set. Looks like the accountant who didn't hand out the Best Actress envelope to Leo DiCaprio forgot to take the duplicate Best Actress off his/her stack and gave Warren Beatty the wrong envelope. The envelopes are labeled on the front but not the back and someone got a screen grab and Warren is, in fact, holding the duplicate Best Actress envelope. You can only fault him for not saying there seemed to be a mistake and then kind of looking at Faye Dunaway without saying anything so she had to decide what to do.

I thought the main 'La La Land' guy was quite gracious and decisive in making it clear 'Moonlight' won when everyone else was standing there all confused and dithering. I'm also really pleased 'Moonlight' won. I thought 'La La Land' was entertaining, but the other Best Picture nominees I've seen were more deserving.

And that telecast was waaaaaay too long. No wonder I usually skip the Oscars.

I missed the actual telecast, but did get to see the whole "Best Picture" segment thanks to huffingtonpost (the only source I was able to find with the entire segment).

Awkward, but... it seems people took it and handled it fairly well, given that this was pretty much unprecedented. Plus the LA LA land folks got to give their acceptance speeches, which were pretty good, even though they didn't win! I'm guessing Moonlight's producer and director would have delivered better acceptance speeches were it not for the chaos, but... if I had to choose between the chance to give a great acceptance speech and winning an Oscar but under less than ideal circumstances? Yeah, I'd settle for the Oscar too!

I wanted to be able to enjpy the Oscars but the political carp was just too much. Even the audience had had enough after a while. I wanted to watch this to get away from it, not have it shoved down my throat.

And they wasted so much time in the middle with the tour bus, and candy and cookies dropping down, that the most important 4 were rushed. Maybe if they had cut out most of the nonsense and were not pressed for time, they would not have made the mistake with the last and most important award.

I thought Beatty and Dunaway handled it as best they could. I mean the poor guy kept looking in the envelope for another card. Maybe if they were not a half hour over, it could have been handled differently.

LaLa Land handled it graciously, and imo Moonlight was deserving of best picture.

I watched the red carpet for fashion and bling. Theron's earrings could not be topped. One drop was pear shaped and the other heart shaped both rocking over 25 carats each plus the added bling. Interesting fashion trends of capes and head bling... Hollywood's 'royalty'.

I haven't yet watched the fashion on E that I TIVO'd on Sunday nor did I watch the Oscars (also haven't yet seen any of the movies) but am looking forward to watching the fashion as soon as I have some uninterrupted time to watch.

Thanks for those links LLJsmom and Matata! And thank you for the synopsis of the movies too LLJsmom! I think we are going to start watching some of those movies on Amazon. Moonlight and Manchester by the Sea are both on Amazon (for pay but that is still a bargain as compared to going to the movies and paying the prices at the theater!) so your write ups are quite helpful.
