For some reason my other thread won't let me post (it says it's locked...?). Here is what I have now, so just two smaller versions of what we're talking about. I think, given my current fondness for my cowskin rug (or rugS, as the case may be--I have three of them!) I will have to stick with these smaller ones because the size of table that I thought I originally wanted would cover the whole hide up.

None of that does you any good though, so let me answer your questions!

I went with non-matchy side tables because I like the idea of contrast (but then again, I'm the one with trapazoid side stones and a round center stone, so maybe don't listen to me! :cheeky: ).

And I also found another option for the big table at Safavieh in New York. If you go this route though be sure to discuss the finish with them becuase the one on the showroom floor was much redder than the one in the photo. The person that I spoke with said it comes in different finishes, so make sure you get the one you want. And I'm not sure if you're thinking rectangular or square, but there Safavieh does have a large square one, however I can't find a pic of it at the moment. I'll keep looking.

*Threadjack!*

Um, I am in  with your hide rug. I've been looking around for some and don't really know where to start in terms of quality, price point, etc- can you recommend somewhere to look?

Aviastar, I had wanted a cowhide rug for AGES! I've passed on a few over the years but when I came across these I snapped them up. Of the three, two have longer curly hair. I'll try to post pics. The third one has the short smooth hair and has a very cool super light brindle pattern that gets darker as you go from tail to neck, but I'm not getting good photos becuase the lights are just glaring off of it and it looks all plain white.

You can get them in a lot of places now and prices are all over the board, starting around a couple hundred bucks at a place like World Market to around a thousand each at a place like Room and Board. I got all three of mine for $1,170 total, and the quality of these hides pretty much as good as I've seen anywhere. They came from Brazil, and one of the keys is the tanning is done with chromium. Mine were bought from a husband and wife team who go to South America and hand pick the hides so unfortunately I can't direct you to a specific store or site, but it's definitely worth looking long and hard for a good hide. Where do you live?

I cannot begin to figure out why some pics are big and some pics are small... sorry!

Hi Dee*Jay! Thank you so much for the info!

I am in VA. My husband and I saw them while travelling abroad this year and were very taken by them, but we had questions about the tanning process, and we didn't know if we could legitimately just pack and check a rug on the plane home, so we didn't buy.

We also are trying to figure out how to clean (and use!) the sheepskins my dad brought home from New Zealand over 30 years ago, so I am delving more into the tanning process than I ever thought I would have to!

Thanks for the info and link DeeJay! I like your current tables too. I would have to have a square coffee table but am fine with non matching end tables. All of my current tables match and in some ways I'm sick of the matchy look! However, me being me, I would have to have the other side tables nailed down before I made a firm decision. I like the one at Ethan Allen but it looks a bit dark for my other furniture which is more of a pecan shade. In all honesty, I've thought on and off about replacing the tables but nothing has seriously caught my eye like the one from Ethan Allen.

I love being able to see something firsthand before ordering too and I hear you on the wood being different in person than in pictures. I'll keep poking around to see what I can see - thanks for your help! I think you are smart to stick with what you have considering the rug underneath and I like the look of those two tables together!

MGR, have you seen the Ethan Allen table in person? I did visit it, and the quality is good and the color is pretty spot on to what I saw on the computer screen.

I actually used to HATE coffee tables, and these are the first ones I've ever had. I'm sure that sounds crazy, but I was just never a coffee table person until then. And the thing I like about these is that they're small and light, so I can maneuver them easily. I tend to sit on the floor with my back to the couch and use my laptop, or they are easy to scoot over and put your feet on.

No, I haven't seen it. Unfortunately they just closed the store closest to me. I'll have to look for another store to visit.

Coffee tables can sometimes get in the way; I have never had one in my family room for that reason. The living room is a place where we don't sit much unless it's with company or something. Truth be told I wouldn't have to have one in there either - it's just a place to set pretties on for looks - ha!
