As someone that works in the industry....this is hilarious. The real resignation is all too true as well, very sad.

I don't know how the financial sector has continued to avoid meaningful regulatory reform, but it seems inevitable. A ban on proprietary trading? Fiduciary duty laws? I wonder.

I read the GS guy's letter, and I find that this is one basic thing: " The company has lost respect for the customer".

It's not limited to one industry. It's everywhere.

Over the years I have worked behind-the-scenes with various retailers and I was appalled when they referred to customers as "idiots" and "morons" in board meetings. This lack of respect shows up in their employees and in their products. Remember when Walmart used to be great (not one of my clients)? Sam Walton led the company with a true respect for their customer; great products, made in USA, etc. Now it a store full of surly employees peddling Chinese junk.

The employees know their stuff is junk, and won't use their own company's products. I was in a meeting once, and one of the VP's for a regional chain said "I won't use our crap, are you kidding?", and everyone laughed. I was absolutely appalled. I heard about another meeting, where a senior manager stood up and said "What about the customer?". Her boss said "Look at (her), whining about the customer again," everyone laughed and snickered. That chain is gone now.

Eventually, the lack of respect will lead to the company circling the drain and dying. It might take a while, but it will happen. And another company will pop up, treat the customer well with great prices on great products, and the circle begins again.

Customers aren't stupid, and they will go elsewhere.

ETA: Didn't read the darth letter . . .
