Democrats demand that Flynn’s resignation spur broader Russia investigation

Democrats hold no levers of power in Washington, but they have pulled out their megaphones to demand that Mr. Flynn’s resignation open the first chapter — not the last — of investigations into contacts between Trump aides and Moscow — during and after Mr. Trump’s campaign for president.

“Nothing about this resignation, or resignations that could occur in the future, precludes the Senate Intelligence Committee from continuing to investigate Gen. Flynn, or any other campaign official who may have had inappropriate and improper contacts with Russian officials prior to the election,” said Senator Mark Warner of Virginia, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee. “It is clear that our task is more urgent than ever.”

In a joint statement, Representative John Conyers Jr. of Michigan, the ranking Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, and Representative Elijah E. Cummings of Maryland, the ranking Democrat on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, said, “We in Congress need to know who authorized his actions, permitted them and continued to let him have access to our most sensitive national security information despite knowing these risks. We need to know who else within the White House is a current and ongoing risk to our national security.”

“While Congressional Republicans have turned a blind eye to their constitutional duty to conduct oversight on these issues, we Democrats believe that this new disclosure warrants a full classified briefing by all relevant agencies, including the Department of Justice and the F.B.I., as soon as possible and certainly before Thursday, Feb. 16. We are communicating this request to the Department of Justice and F.B.I. this evening.”

The Democratic National Committee reiterated the party’s call for an independent, bipartisan panel styled after the 9/11 Commission to investigate Russia’s involvement in the 2016 election.

Representative Eric Swalwell of California, the lead Democrat on the C.I.A. subcommittee of the House Intelligence Committee, was blunt: “For the sake of our nation’s future, our intelligence and law enforcement community must determine whether Donald Trump’s loyalties lie with us or with the Russians.”

Senator John McCain of Arizona, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, was the first elected Republican to hit hard on the turmoil in President Trump’s White House, and the continuing questions about Russian influence.

“General Flynn’s resignation is a troubling indication of the dysfunction of the current national security apparatus,” said Mr. McCain, who has emerged as one of the few Republican antagonists that Mr. Trump has not silenced.

“General Flynn’s resignation also raises further questions about the Trump administration’s intentions toward Vladimir Putin’s Russia, including statements by the President suggesting moral equivalence between the United States and Russia despite its invasion of Ukraine, annexation of Crimea, threats to our NATO allies, and attempted interference in American elections,” he continued.

Trump tries his best to deflect attention from Flynn.

A day after Facebook posts came to light showing deliberations over North Korea in the public dining hall of Mar-a-Lago, President Trump is up in arms about loose national security controls.

The real story here is why are there so many illegal leaks coming out of Washington? Will these leaks be happening as I deal on N.Korea etc?

Illegal leaks are of course a growing concern for Mr. Trump, since they portray him as running a White House that from the outside at least appears to be spinning out of control. For Mr. Trump, however, the imperative is to focus attention on anything but Russia.

Republicans largely silent

As scandal swirled around President Trump’s new White House, Republicans in Congress beyond Mr. McCain were almost silent on the resignation of Mr. Flynn and its implications.

House Speaker Paul D. Ryan of Wisconsin chose to focus on Mr. Flynn’s decision to mislead Vice President Mike Pence on the contents of his conversations with Russia’s ambassador to the United States, Sergey I. Kislyak.

“You cannot have a national security advisor misleading the vice president and others,” he told reporters Tuesday.

But Mr. Ryan deflected when asked about calls for congressional inquiries into the episode. “I’m not going to prejudge circumstances surrounding this,” he said. “I think the administration will explain the circumstances that led to this.”

He again praised Mr. Trump, without identifying Mr. Flynn by name. “As soon as this person lost the president’s trust, the president asked for his resignation,” Mr. Ryan said, “and that was the right thing to do.”

In fact, the Justice Department informed the White House a month ago that Mr. Flynn had not been truthful about his conversations with the ambassador.

The chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Devin Nunes of California, a Trump loyalist, released one of the few statements from the Republican side of the aisle, and it offered no criticism:

“Michael Flynn served in the U.S. military for more than three decades. Washington, D.C., can be a rough town for honorable people, and Flynn — who has always been a soldier, not a politician — deserves America’s gratitude and respect for dedicating so much of his life to strengthening our national security. I thank him for his many years of distinguished service.”

Senator Richard Burr of North Carolina, chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, was no more forthcoming. “Mike Flynn served his country with distinction,” he said in a statement. “The President needs a National Security Advisor whom he can trust and I defer to him to decide who best fills that role.”

One exception, the former chairman of the Republican National Committee, Michael Steele, who threw his not very heavy weight behind a bipartisan commission.

Amid turmoil, military leaders grow worried

General Tony Thomas, head of the military’s Special Operations Command, told a military conference on Tuesday that the upheavals in Washington are rippling through the American military.

“Our government continues to be in unbelievable turmoil,” he said. “I hope they sort it out soon because we’re a nation at war.”

General Thomas insisted Special Operations Forces are “staying focused” despite all the controversy in Washington.

Asked about his comments later, General Thomas said in a brief interview, “As a commander, I’m concerned our government be as stable as possible.”

Almost two months after the Obama administration temporarily closed it, Mr. Trump’s staff resuscitated the White House comment line on Monday, and volunteers will now take comments for the president on a routine basis.

The line’s closure, during a time of dramatic change in the government, spawned consternation among those already wary about the new administration and its commitment to public accountability. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, a spokeswoman for the White House, said the closure had been merely a matter of staffing the office that maintains the line.

Although the White House was warned a month ago that Mr. Flynn had been untruthful about the nature of his contacts with Moscow, he was allowed into security briefings as recently as Monday, White House adviser Kellyanne Conway said on the “Today” show on Tuesday.

The Justice Department had warned the White House weeks ago that Mr. Flynn’s dissembling put him at risk of blackmail from Russian intelligence, but he was kept by the president’s side.

“That’s one characterization,” Ms. Conway said when confronted with those circumstances.

the entire thing is unreal. I want a FULL investigation into scrotus, VP, etc.

Re: Olbermann calls for Flynn arrest for treason (scrotus to

Ever since it came out that Flynn had secretly negotiated with the Russians while Obama was still the President of the United States and attempting to conduct foreign policy by enacting sanctions against Russia, I mentioned the word "treason" in connection with Flynn and Trump. I mentioned Trump because Flynn would not be able to negotiate with the Russians without Trump's blessing. (At the time I had heard nothing of Mike Pence's involvement.)

Trump obviously undermined (look at the results) President Obama's foreign policy with Russia by surreptitiously and illegally doing business with the Russians in contravention of The Logan act. Of course he, and Vice president Pence, who we now know was aware of the shenanigans, should be impeached for treason.

I do think they need to do a full fledged investigation into the whole Trump campaign. This is serious stuff, and does cause me to have concerns about national security. All along, I have been resigned to Trump being president, thinking he is just a business man. How badly can he screw things up. Well, I don't know if Flynn acted on his own or was fully albeit not officially sanctioned by the Trump campaign to disclose the info that he did. However, they need to find out. This is bad. It's bad that he was serving at the behest of Trump and it's extra bad if Trump gave him the unofficial go ahead. Just bad.

I am more concerned that there is a leak somewhere and sensitive information is getting out.

There have been leaks, leaks from inside The White House. And those leaks have angered Donald Trump. He has said publicly that he is angered about the leaks. News commentators from various political stripes on MSNBC appear to think that these leaks are coming from within the ranks of career civil servants who are loyal to the civil service not to one administration or to the professional intelligence services, who have always been aware of what the Trump campaign was up to (because the NSA sees everything).

The information that is very, very slowly being leaked out of the White house to the American people is providing evidence that not only did Mr. Flynn secretly meet with Russian officials and undermine President Obama's foreign policy by so doing, but that throughout the 2016 presidential campaign Trump campaign advisors were in touch with Russian officials. Of course the Russians, who were engaged in this with Trump and his team, knew about it. Apparently US intelligence services had found out about it, too. They have proof of the meetings, which is how Flynn was pressured to resign. But now the truth is slowly being leaked to us, the American people. That scares Trump a lot, in case anyone should act on the information.

Yes, I read that article too. It is very disturbing. It requires a thorough investigation. It is so easy to see the risk of Flynn making himself subject to control of Russia after having had these discussions.

I am definitely most concerned Flynn having illegal discussions with Russia. I am not that worried about the leaks. Leaks always happen and have happened throughout history. That is usually how we find out about illegal activities, IMO anyway.

Re: Olbermann calls for Flynn arrest for treason (scrotus to

Leaks from intelligence agencies put our national security and possibly intelligence staff at risk. There is a legal process for these people to put forth concerns about information they find. The leakers are using classified information for political reasons.

That is true too. I think they need to address the two issues separately. Being concerned with leaks does not negate also being concerned with what Flynn had done and the administration and activities leading up to it and surrounding it. Both should be addressed and investigated. It will be very interesting to see what else comes out.

I do see the irony in the situation, as mentioned in the article that Matata originally referenced. I am trying not to chuckle because the situation is very serious. But it is very ironic.

There are some pretty significant names calling for charges of treason, actually, from Agent Orange to McConnell and Ryan--the entire lot. I've read several articles on Reuters and AP about this, with citations of law school texts and precedent cases. Dan Rather is a fascinating person to follow, as well, he posts some amazing "essays", if you want to call them that, on Facebook and on his site, News and Guts, about everything going on, and he was comparing this to Watergate, saying in his lifetime that this will be as big a scandal/downfall for an administration, if not bigger. Given what he's covered in his 80 or whatever years of life...that's quite a statement.

I've had to walk away to go color and look at makeup and bling before I lose my shit.

The biggest issue with, I guess the term for this would be "whistleblowing"?...leaking, whatever. That's probably not the word in this instance...but you know what I mean---it's gotten so contentious and weird in there that they've had to use a "disappearing message" app to communicate because they have no idea who they can trust, who is listening and who is watching what. Everything is "bugged" and shared and hacked. Agent Orange is using an OLD Android--it's NOT something that can be secured, is a device so easily hackable a 4 year old can do it, so whatever he's sending/doing, who's intercepting that? I mean it's ridiculous...For someone who had such outrage over those goddamn emails ( ), you'd think he'd try a little harder?

I mean...

He's more pissed that it IS leaking because that means he's getting caught "with his pants down", not just that he's got his pants down--the latter of which is what he should be more concerned with. You made such a stink about "transparency." Well, you got it. Don't look the gift horse in the mouth if you're going to do shady things to the horse.

Regardless--everyone is in danger, not just the agencies, but the people. Some of the people are in danger because of government sanctioned ICE Raids in direct violation of court orders. Just paint a giant target on us, why don't you.

It's weird to be so concerned with "leaks" when you're turning the dining room of your business into one big *unsecured* White House. I guess "leaks" are only a concern when you're worried you've done something seriously wrong?

I'm sure I don't need to remind you all, but I'll just leave this pic here.
