Okay, I know we don't do politics here, but since Pricescope is very heavily related to engagement, marriage, etc. I am requesting a slight bend in political policies to discuss Defense of Marriage Act and the fact that Obama has declared it unconstitutional. it seems appropriate and relevant considering DOMA affects the majority of posters. (Pretty please??)

Admin, please advise. Thanks :))

I think its a huge step forward to equality and it makes me glad I voted for Obama.

What's DOMA?

megumic just mentioned that it is an acronym standing for, "The Defense of Marriage Act", which seeks to limit marriage to the union of one man and one woman.

Although it does far more than that, that's a pretty good summation.

POTUS has said he feels it is unconstitutional. After being advised by the Attorney General, who feels the same way, has told those defending the 2 pending cases from NY and CT to not defend against Section 3 of DOMA.

Sure, davi. Put me down. Marginalize me. Minimize what I say and as, "pretty good". But in the next big snowstorm, who is going to have the bigger dog...we have three between us, do I say, "biggest" dog?...who can make it through the deep snow? Huh?

Deb I really hope you don't feel marginalized. I'd feel bad if I did that.

As for snow, I really hope there isn't another this year!!! HAHA. But yes, your dog is like 5 times the size of one and 10 times the size of the other... so you win!

Me too! I don't understand why this is *still* such an issue.

Without weighing in on the morality the law itself...I think only a federal court should be able to make that call. I certainly do appreciate him taking a stance and quit waffling as he and so many politicians have done on the subject.

I saw the full name but I still didn't get it so I thought I'd ask for clarification. I get it now.

Yeah, I'm also in the WHY-is-this-still-an-issue camp and would really appreciate if people would just chill and let everyone marry whoever they want to (as long as they're of age, of course).

The point of his statement is that he is head of the Executive Branch, under which the Department of Justice (aka the government's lawyers) operate. As their boss, he is telling them not to defend this part of the law in court. The court will make the decision as to whether it is constitutional or not, but it means that the DoJ lawyers no longer have to go and argue before the court that it Is constitutional. Up until now, the DoJ has been defending the law when it was challenged in court.

I think this is important to discuss because continuing with DOMA the way it is puts so many families at risk of not having federal and state benefits available to them -- stuff as simple as access to a partner or child in a hospital. I hope Obama and Holder's position is continued and the portion of DOMA stating that marriage is only between a man and a woman is put to bed forever. I truly cannot understand the downside to not allowing same-sex couples to marry, but would certainly appreciate the opinion of those who can try to explain it.

While we appreciate that it is an important topic at this time political topics are not allowed on the forum due to the inability of some members to control themselves.

We cannot make exceptions for certain political issues and not others, thus this thread will now be locked.

I apologize for any inconvenience and I assure you we are looking for a way to bring it back while still maintaining PS as a pleasant place to be.
