I'm looking for some advice on our October honeymoon please.

We've never been to the US together so it'll be a first trip but the basic itinerary would be 4 nights on Long Island (quiet relaxing getaway after the chaos of the wedding) followed by 3 or 4 nights in NYC.

Does anybody have any good suggestions for Long Island? We have a decent budget so looking to stay somewhere nice. I appreciate weather in October won't be the warmest so I'd be open to suggestions on activities too. i think I'd probably rent a car so we could explore though.

We love dining out so somewhere with really good restaurants would also be ideal. I've looked at Montauk and Shelter Island but it's a bit of a minefield at the moment.

I've never stayed at this hotel, but locationwise, it could be a good potential place:

Hyatt is #1 for riverhead hotels on tripadvisor:

I suggest this hotel because it's in Riverhead, and I THINK this is the hotel that is next to the Atlantis Aquarium. I've never been to the aquarium - just driven passed it  . I'm usually on my way to go to the... VINEYARDS! There's a vodka tasting place nestled within the wineries as well, if you want a change of pace ;-)

Whenever we go to the wineries, we make a point to stop at Farm Country Kitchen. It's located in a white house so you could easily miss it! It's so delicious! Thank you yelp for leading us there. I suggest eating there at least once. IIRC, they can make you a box lunch to take along with you for a day of winery hopping! I adore their potato salad... I don't know why, but everyone that's tried it has said it's the best!

Delicious ice cream. I think it's so sweet and romantic when I see a couple walking together, each with a cone.

While in Riverhead, make a pit stop to see the big duck - not so romantic, but it's cute for a photo op

I'd stay a day and a half in Riverhead to 2 days tops. Then I'd start making my way further out east - Montauk. I've never been to Gurney's, but I've heard good things - one gal had her wedding there, another friend said the food is good.

Great advice there thankyou. I think we've had second thoughts though and now thinking of doing Florida for 5 nights then NYC for 3 nights. I was just a bit put off that it would be off season (cold) and we are both sun worshipers.

My new choices are Clearwater or Naples. Key West looks great but it's just a bit far from Miami after a 9 / 10hr flight. Also appears to be significantly more expensive that the gulf coast resorts.

Assuming you can get a nonstop flight from your preferred UK airport to Tampa International Airport, Clearwater is just 20 miles from the Tampa airport (but nearly 300 miles from Miami's airport).

My grandparents lived in Naples for many years & I still have great affection for it and the area. No matter where you decide upon, October is still "hurricane season", so good travel insurance is especially important! (And I'd be saying that even if you were heading to the Hamptons).
