Re: Nice place near LA airport ro eat and hang out for 3-4 h
Main Street in downtown El Segundo.
It is like going back in time a couple generations.
El Segundo's high school has been used in many period films and TV shows.
El Segundo is just south of LAX.
Lots of shops and restaurants.
One jeweler there carries Eightstar diamonds.
The old fashioned movie house has a huge grand old Wurlitzer organ they play sometimes for shows or before films.
El Segundo Bakery (I think it is on Grand Ave near Main St) has KILLER banana whipped cream cake!!!
Going for a walk on the Strand in Manhattan beach is beautiful too.
The Strand is just a large sidewalk between the sandy beach and lovely beach-front homes.
LA is NOT a place known for people going for a walk - which is why this is such a lovely treat.
Manhattan Beach is the next city south of El Segundo.
Re: Nice place near LA airport ro eat and hang out for 3-4 h
Marina del Rey has some nice restaurants, but you might be bored after a while. Downtown El Segundo might not take up that much time either.
Manhattan beach pier has restaurants, and there might be a lil more to see. Try yelping it to see what's more to your liking. There are little shops all along the street parallel to the Strand, 23rd street jewelers is there, and it'd be nice to see the sunset there too. It will be chilly tho, so dress warm.

If you like rotisserie chicken and LOVE garlic with black beans and rice ... Versailles Cuban Resaurant in Manhattan Beach on Sepulveda Blvd. is the BEST!!!
Not very pricey either.
Re: Nice place near LA airport ro eat and hang out for 3-4 h
Whatever you do, do NOT just go walking away from the airport down Century Blvd.
It seems sleazy and unsafe to me.
Nothing nice and safe is really walking distance from LAX.
If you don't have a car take a taxi.

An alternative to Westwood is Santa Monica 3rd street Promenade. You could also check out the beach, as it is a few blocks from the overlook as well as the pier.
Re: Nice place near LA airport ro eat and hang out for 3-4 h
I've lived in LA for 10+ years and I've never done any of the fun stuff Kenny suggested. Now I know what I'm going to do with my next day off!! It's totally up my alley (I'll have some versaille at Pico and La Cienega first though).
Sorry for the thread jack. I really need to get out more.
Re: Nice place near LA airport ro eat and hang out for 3-4 h
Manhattan Beach is the way to go. You do NOT want to go to Santa Monica between the hours of 4 - 9. It will take you forever to get there as it's rush hour.
I second the recommendation for Versailles if you like garlic chicken. It's pretty cheap eats too. If you drive on Sepulveda heading south, it's on the left side shortly after Manhattan Beach Blvd.
The Manhattan Mall (on Sepulveda from Rosecrans to Marine) is what I call the "mommy mall". Cooking shops, kids shops, women's clothes and a few other stores like the Apple store Kenny mentioned. It's a very small mall, but nice. In the same parking lot as the mall is a restaurant called Tin Roof Bistro which is not bad for a glass of wine and a meal. There are other restaurants mall area lot as well.
If you go further down Sepulveda, you can make a right on Manhattan Beach Blvd, which will take you down to downtown Manhattan Beach. Some shops down there but nothing spectacular. Some decent restaurants and bars down there too.
If you want to go to Hermosa Beach, which has a pedestrian area, you just go down further on Sepulveda heading south and make a right on Pier Ave. Plenty of cute shops and at the end of the street where it dead ends on Hermosa Ave, you'll see the pedestrian area. If you make a right turn on Hermosa Ave, a few yards down on the left side, you'll see an entrance to a parking structure (if you hit 14th street, you've gone too far). Park there, note the number of your spot, and pay the parking machine on the ground floor.
My recommendation is to do one of the beaches for a sunset, catch a bite, then maybe head up to the mall later in the evening to do some window shopping.
Oh, forgot to mention, RIGHT near the airport before Rosecrans blvd on Sepulveda is also a fairly new shopping area in El Segundo. They have a Best Buy, Worldmarket, Homegoods, WholeFoods, Sur la Table, and many other stores but it is a fairly expansive area so it's harder to walk the entire shopping area. Restaurants there too, Marmalade Cafe and Salt Creek Grille. If you were to make a left turn down Rosecrans, you will also run into many other restaurants designed for the local corporate clientelle, including PF Changs, McCormick, Flemings, Houstons, Paul Martin, Il Fornaio and more. All of the restaurants are located before you hit Aviation Blvd heading East on Rosecrans.

Thank you for the additional suggestions about things to do, and the safety warnings! I will be heading out soon and hopefully traffic will be minimally bad!

If you go to the shopping center that TGal mentioned, hit the Flemings for a margarita and appetizers. My favorite restaurant,
with the best margaritas in the world. I have checked.
I am going to have to get out that way more and check out some of those restaurants myself!

Hi All!
Just pop in to thank you for the recommendations again.
We had only about one hour to hang out in the airport area yesterday due to other family activities, so we only went to Manhattan Beach downtown and walked out to the pier for a night view of the waves (it was COLD!). We also had some yummy ice cream before going to the airport.
I hope to visit all these other places you suggested during our next visit!
Thanks!
