HI:

I love our furry neighbours! Haven''t seen them in my back yard much this winter.....but I see thier hoofprints in the snow in the morning.....

cheers--Sharon

WOW, that is sooooo Beautiful! I love that picture; what a wonderful surprise to see you kitty making friends w/deer.
Sharon, that is so cool you see so many deer in your own backyard!

Oh! So beautiful!

On a side note, where my friends live in WI there are a LOT of deer. At their wedding it seemed like everyone was asking my BF ''so you do hunt deer, don''t you?''. The first few times he reacted in absolute horror because in Ireland it''s illegal to hunt deer!
9.gif
Then our friends honeymooned over here and there are quite a few roads with ''Warning - Deer'' signs on them but seriously I have never seen a deer on an open road in my whole life. Our poor friends were on high alert the whole time and were so shocked at the locals zooming down these supposedly deer populated roads at full tilt! Cos of course that would be virtually suicide in WI...

Adorable photo! Thanks for sharing

That is amazing! I can't believe the deer came right up to the door and the cat was so calmly observing. Very cool, Madam, thanks for posting this.

Awwwww. That is adorable!

oh my gosh, that is so sweet. Thank you for posting this. Not everyday you get to see something like that.

Amazing someone had their camera at the ready! What a great shot!

Awww, that is such a sweet picture. I wish the deer would always be friendly and up close like that instead of getting out in the roads and making life dangerous for all involved! My parents have huge herds that come through their land nightly but they like to graze on another neighbor''s land at dusk during the summer months and the babies always get out in the road and cause problems now that the road is more heavily traveled. DH and I are always worrying about them when we drive down to my parents, and sometimes when I drive down by myself I really get anxious driving down the roads wondering if they will pop out in front of my car as they tend to do.

Awwwwwww, that is adorable. Makes me wish I lived in rural Wisconsin...almost.

Howdy...come on in!

Did you notice there is another set of ears on the ground below? I wonder what 8 hoofs sound like on a wood deck. Bet the camera operator got some heebie jeebies before she/he realized what was actually there.
32.gif
And I would think he heebies would continue after you learned what was there. Still adorable though. Thanks for posting the image, I had not seen it Madam B.

Ha! Good eyes you, totally missed that 3rd pair.

aww that''s so cute!

You actually can hunt deer in Ireland, you just have to get a license and they have different times of the year that you can hunt different breeds of deer. One of the farmers that I had to do work experience with hunted deer the whole time I was there-thankfully I wasn''t around when he went to do it though.I adore deer!

Bee of course, you are right. Out of interest, do you know are there many deer left outside Killarney, the Phoenix Park etc? I''ve never seen one in the wild... I have had them streak across the path of the car on the main road in the Phoenix Park though, that was scary. Do you remember a couple of years ago those English guys came over on a stag weekend and went hunting deer with shotgun in Killarney without a licence? They ended up with criminal convictions over it.

All the guys we were hanging out with at that wedding were big into their hunting and I think they thought there was something wrong with poor BF cos he''s never hunted!

What an adorable picture. Where my mom lives, we see the deer walking down her street. At times, the babies are following the parents. I just want to walk out in front and give them a hug, they are so darn cute.

Linda

OMG, that is so adorable. Thanks for posting, Madam B. I wonder what the meeting would have been like if there were no pane of glass between them.

There are a lot of deer left in the Phoenix Park, too many actually. They have to cull over 50 of them each year. One of the vets that I used to work with has the license for the deer culling in the park and he used to say that there were just way too many of them. When we were walking Amber there last summer there were deer everywhere! Up in the mountains in South Dublin, there are a lot of wild deer also. Another of the farmers I did experience with used to go crazy as they used to spread tb to his cattle!

Yeah I remember the controversy when they had to do a larger than usual cull last year was it? I''m learning lots from you today, thank you!

You know, we've started seeing this. They have always been in our area, but usually you'd only catch a fleeting glimpse once every blue moon. My son yelled one morning, and I looked out the kitchen window, and there was a mama and baby walking right down the middle of the street. (We've had several sightings like that)

That was treat enough, but a few mornings later, I stepped out onto the front stoop, just to get a breath of fresh air. It wasn't quite 6:30, still dark. I was just standing there gazing up the street, when I heard something. I slightly turned my head to the right and froze while a deer walked right in front of me in our front yard. No more than 20 feet away. It was awesome! I went out every morning after for almost a week trying to catch it again, but no dice.

We live near a lake, and the neighborhood is set amidst wilderness areas, including one directly across the street from us. We have lots of deer. People feed them, they are protected from hunting because this is annexed land within city limits, and so there are deer everywhere. Speed limits in our area are 25mph for a reason; but they are very used to people and cars, and the neighbors are used to them.

Dave and I roll down the windows and talk to them as we drive by. They look up and actually listen! We have been out in our driveway, waiting in the dark for deer visitors, and been rewarded with 2 or 3 strolling through the yard just feet from us. We're like schoolkids at the zoo! One night a couple of weeks ago, we were both awake about 2:30 and we heard them walking through the leaves outside our bedroom window. We opened the blinds, sat in the dark, and watched them graze just inches from our window. I was holding our cat so she could watch too; she was absolutely mesmerized! We usually drive around the block before going home, just to see how many deer are out, and to talk to them. They used to look a little startled, but now they kind of seem to expect it! Funny how they can recognize your car and your voice.

As for the many deer in the picture, some of our neighbors who feed have 15-20 deer at a time in their yards. One elderly gentleman is a good friend and fellow parishioner at my church; he has a very large lot and uses a tractor to haul buckets of corn out to spread. As soon as the deer hear the tractor, they come running out of the woods to eat!

Holly, sounds like a really neat place to live!

That''s a really interesting photo. It''s hard to explain why. I guess when you''ve hunted and butchered all of your life, it takes some of the beauty away from the animal. That''s truly a striking photo in that it correlates the fond affection of pets and wildlife.

I love that photo! I have to wonder though, is it real?

We love it! We''ve decided to look close by when we are ready to purchase a home. Our current house is the former home of an old friend of mine; I remember when I was in my 20s how really ''out in the country'' this area seemed. Now the town is growing out towards us. This neighborhood is in a bit of a time warp with tall, old trees and simpler (meaning no McMansions) housing. And, thankfully, even the newer housing is not on a grand and ridiculous scale; the houses even seem to have some quaint charm, which you don''t find very often in brand new suburbs.

We are very happy to be country living within a couple of miles of civilization.

That photo made me think of another I had seen recently. The cat in this one looks exactly like my friends cat, Rhett.

I live in the same general metro area as Holly, but I definitely don''t have the warm and fuzzy feelings about the hoofed rats that terrorize our neighborhood. I''ve had deer kill trees by rubbing on them, attack my terminally-ill dog 5 feet from my front door, eat all my tomatoes and figs, and strip every last green leaf off my shrubs. At our old house, the woman across the street used to spread a bucket of corn for them to browse every night, which is a horrible idea for both people driving as well as the health of the deer (can cause dependence, overpopulation, nutritional imbalances, and improperly raised corn can have deadly fungus that can kill other wildlife).

But at least venison is tasty.
