So here's the latest addition to the family. Her name is Mya and she is a female British Shorthair. Love these cats because they have the most loving, gentle personality.....and they are lovely and chunky too, with fur that is dense and soft! She's not ready to leave her mum until the end of February, but we are all so excited!!!

She's going to be company for our other BSH Merlin. Ain't he a cutie?

The breeder has recommended we let her have one litter of kittens before she is spayed. Apparently, it is supposed to be better for the cat. Got a few problems with that...

1. We have absolutely no breeding experience.
2. Would probably end up keeping all the kittens, because we would get attached. And If we did tried to sell them, it would be a nightmare, because I would be so picky about who they went to.

So does anyone know if there are any benefits of letting your cat have at least one litter? or is this just a myth? And regarding neutering, when is it best to do this? (Merlin already neutered).

Anyone????????

OMG OMG OMG!!!!!!!
She is adorable!!!!! You lucky duck!

My hubby and I always wanted a British shorthair! They are so lovable. I wanted one that is a light grey with those striking orange eyes... (sigh) I am envious! :)

ETA: Merlin is a handsome man... Does he have blue or amber eyes? Can't tell cause he's so content :)

Merlin has big AMBER eyes! I think the color you like is the lilac. Have a look below.

What cute cats you have there!!! Their faces have such personality, congrats.

I emphasized my beliefs to your question above.

As for age of neutering, before 6 months is what I would recommend.

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwww *thud* He meeeeelts my heart!
I do love the lilac but after seeinf Merlin, I think I like the deeper grey colored one - those eyes are soooo striking! Do you have a picture of your baby Merlin with his eyes wide open so I can gaze at them? :)

*I know I have this sickness lol*

ETA: By the way, if you are not planning having kittens, spay her at around 6 months. You will avoid a cat in heat and even if Merlin is fixed it will still drive him crazy (and you too lol). And ditto on the kittens - I'd probably want to keep them all to myself - which is not really realistic!

Awww, I love BSH cats. I debated between them and ragdolls. I ended up going with ragdolls but one day in my life I will get a BSH. They are so cute.

Your kitten is adorable! Getting a second cat is a great idea. I love having 2 cats. I don't feel as bad when I am gone from home since they have each other. My cats are very social with each other and enjoy being around each other.

I think its really odd that your breeder suggested you let her have a litter first. Have you used that breeder before? That would be a serious red flag for me.

I got my ragdolls from 2 different breeders because I got one and then decided within weeks we needed a second to keep her company and was lucky enough that one of the breeders I contacted in my initial search has a kitten she was planning on keeping to show but decided that her ears were a bit too big for that and I got to adopt her. Anyway, both breeders insisted on spaying the cats before she would release them to me. Among reputable ragdoll breeders that seems to be the norm.

SQUEEEEEEEEEE I love your new kitten! Your other boy is stunning! I love his color!

Eeeeeek! She is so cute Blod and so is Merlin!

I would not breed from her, I have heard this before that breeding a cat is supposedly better for it, I don't see how it can be better....Then you have 6 kittens you need to worry about and find good homes for and as you know, good loving forever homes are hard to come by.

My advice, for what it is worth, just get her spayed at 6 months or whenever your vet recommends and don't breed her. Enough cats and kittens out there without homes without adding to it.

And enjoy your beautiful babies!!!

good grief they are so cute!

what does your vet say about neuter age?

i'm unaware of any advantage to letting a cat have a litter but certainly aware of the disadvantages of doing so.

So cute! And yes, I agree with everyone that its a myth. Its actually MUCH healthier for the cat to get spayed before they every go into heat, so at or around 6 months. Drastically reduces risk of cancer among many other benefits.

Your kitties are soooo cute! I want...I want

So adorable!!! I just love both of them.

I agree with what previous posters have said about breeding. It seems unnecessary to me. I've been a shelter volunteer for years & am now involved in a cat rescue group. There's just so much overpopulation and so many animals who need homes. It just seems irresponsible to me to bring another litter of kittens into the world unnecessarily. I would spay her prior to 6 months!

I can't wait to see more pictures of your little darling!

OH my goodness!!! what adorable kitties!!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE them... I just emailed dh their pictures... they are for sure on my top list in case we get another kitty!!! SOOO STINKING CUTE!

Blod - I think you could sell that litter right here haha!

What a lovely little sweetie  - best of luck with her.

Both kitties are beautiful! Our cats are tortie colored like your Mya.
