Awwwwww :kiss2:

Just sent a photo to my sister and her reply is

Psittacine
Parrot family. “

Is she right?

I never even heard of this parrot. So beautiful no matter what they are.

African grey?

This is what she texted me

Where r they?
Could be cockatoo or African grey, but some sort of parrot.

@soxfan you get all the best babies ♥️

Oh geez, I was way off!

Congrats on your new baby!

Sun conure!

Aww I just read they are endangered. :cry2:

This species is currently threatened by loss of habitat and trapping for plumage or the pet trade. Sun parakeets are now listed as endangered by the IUCN [

Thanks for taking care of these sweet babies and hopefully they will thrive.

I am getting the little one. Someone took in two that were rescues and were supposed to be male, but one keeps laying eggs. She raises them and finds good homes for them:) And she keeps the cost low so people don't have to buy at pet stores.

People get them and don't understand just how needy and loud they are- then they want to get rid of them:( Not me. I freaking LOVE birds- having a bird in my house is a dream come true for me. It can sit on my shoulder all damn day. LOL!

Yay! :appl:

I am not a bird person (I prefer my pets to have fur), but they are adorable!!!!! :kiss2: And so pretty as adults =)2

Will it talk? How big can their vocabulary get?

Soxfan, if you like birds you might want to look into getting a Caique, they are very clownish and a lot of fun!

They don't really "talk," they scream. LOL! Here's some videos of them. One flew in our yard last year and I was able to reunite it with it's owner. It flew up on our shoulders, had a grand time in our fish pond, and the kids were SOOOO bummed that we couldn't keep it.

@soxfan Oh goodness they do scream! Don't sound much different from my Chihuahuas LOL :lol-2:

So lovely! congratulations.!!!!

OMG, bless your heart - another conure lover.
Your baby looks so sweet. :kiss2:

Soxfan, I'm afraid to listen to your video of screaming Suns.

Bibi is my 5 yr old companion parrot.
He goes everywhere with me, except work.

When I go into a store or restaurant, where you probably shouldn't bring a pet, I put him in my shirt.
He'll climb up and perch on my collar with his head and breasts sticking out.
When people see him they are usually charmed and enthralled - especially kids.

Bibi is SUPER-socialized.
He loves to sit on the shoulder of any new person to munch on their hair, cuddle and give kisses.
5 years old, hand raised, I started taking him around the day I got him, about a week after being weaned.
He spent zero time sitting in a cage at a pet shop.
I showed up the moment he, and his two siblings were ready to come home, spent a few hours with each and Bibi pushed his siblings out of the way to steal my heart.

I'm so in love with this little green friend.
He talks.
He says his name Bibi, Come here, Stop it, Gimme a Kiss, Birdie Birdie, etc.
Conures don't have clear voices like some larger parrots.
His "accent" sounds like an old man who smoked all his life.

I could talk about him for days, but this is your thread.

On my! I was watching this video and the sounds of the birds woke my golden retriever from a very deep sleep! They are noisy little creatures, but oh my so adorable. Congratulations on your new baby Soxfan! So very exciting!

Kenny, I could hear what you have to share about Bibi for days. Please share. I am sure I am not the only one who loves hearing about him. The way you talk about him is pure love and joy. And it's so beautiful to hear.

Awwww! Post pics!!!!!!!!!

I love birds! Please post follow ups, can't wait to see. I was on a waiting list to get a conure, but had to cancel out because my husband's respirologist said it was a bad idea. I've had birds in the past, but no conures.

Kenny, I may add another conure after I get him/her so they can have a play mate! I want to socialize the bird for at least a year though so it can bond with me.

@kenny You must post pictures of him in your shirt! So I take it birds have different personalities? Like dogs, cats, horses, etc.?

Kenny, I may add another conure after I get him/her so they can have a play mate! I want to socialize the bird for at least a year though so it can bond with me.

Please research this.
Perhaps it's better to get two that grow up together, I don't know ... but ...

I read several places that adding a second bird often results in them becoming enemies, particularly when it challenges a bond with the human.
Like wild animals they might compete (read fight) for who gets the chosen "mate".

Parrots are monogamous and often develop a favorite human in the family.
But they can also switch loyalties, sometimes to a family member who wants nothing to do with the bird.
Bibi considered me to be his "mate" till my SO walked in the door: Bibi immediately took to him.

Now Bibi's only affectionate with me when my SO is not in the building.
When SO is home or we are out at a bird-friendly bar or restaurant Bibi usually wants to be surgically grafted to him might, and I risk getting a painful bite if I so much as hug my SO when Bibi's on his shoulder.
It reminds me of a body guard.
I don't scold Bibi for this or try to train it away.
I do my best to accept what is natural for a wild animal, since I've forced it to live in an unnatural situation.

So strong is Bibi's obsession with SO that when SO went to work Bibi would search the house in a panic, screaming, looking for SO.
Now, when SO has to leave Bibi and I stand in the driveway and watch his car drive away.
I swear, as the car backs out of the driveway Bibi will actually say, "Stop It! Come Here!".
When his car is out of sight Bibi is immediately calm and once again affectionate with me.
I'm second fiddle now, and that's fine.

I'm not saying a playmate addition won't work, but there's no guarantee.
It's a risk.
Birds have even been known to attack or even kill the newcomer "playmate".
Lots of wild animals compete to the death for a "mate".

I've read some people have had to put the two cages in different rooms and never let both birds into the same room.
Or, they have to rehome the new bird, additional trauma for the poor thing. :(sad

I always keep in mind my fid (kid spelled with an F) will always be 99% a wild animal, even though very tame and a hand-fed baby.
Actually for me, the challenge of learning about the culture/society they are wired for, and adapting to these intelligent creatures is a big part of their charm.
It's deeply rewarding when you're successful building a trusting relationship with a parrot.

In contrast with a parrot, getting a dog to love you is easy, as illustrated by this very un-PC joke:
If you locked your wife and your dog in your trunk for an hour, when you let them out your dog would just be happy to see you.
