I was wondering if anyone has been able to actually go to a retail store like Jared''s and negotiated a better price. I think i found a good diamond online that i''d buy, but i don''t want to buy the setting for it online as it is about $500 more online.

So, what i was thinking was taking a printout from online and see if I could get them to give me either a better deal, or get me closer to what i wanted in terms of a diamond. This way i can get their warranty and setting at the same place i get the diamond.

Anyone care to share their thoughts/stories?

I don''t know that this really relates, but FH and I found the perfect wedding band for him, and we brought it to our local jeweler to see if they could custom make it for cheaper. The next day after talking to their jeweler and supplier, they called FH back and told him he should buy it online because it would be cheaper.

In looking for my engagement ring, I have gone to Jared''s locally and have found the exact setting i was looking for priced at $1500. I have found a similar setting at bluenile.com priced for $2000.

This leads to my main debate. I can find a better value diamond online but a better value setting offline. I could get each separately, but i think if i purchase at a local store, i might be able to get a warranty thrown in or something like that. And i can''t use homeowners, seeing as i dont own a home yet.

So, should i get it all online and bite the bullet? Or buy separately? This is my first ring, and i want to do it right. But don''t want to get ripped off whether i purchase on/offline, you know?

I haven''t tried to get them to reduce the price on an item but I did manage to get them to give me more for my trade-in than they originally intended to give me. Not sure if this helps you at all. It won''t hurt to try, all they can do is say no. They were quite easy to work with in terms of getting me in stones to look at in different carat/quality/color.

Blue Nile doesn't always have the best prices...

Looking for this kind of setting,

DCD has a close version with .65 cts of princess cut accents at about $1500 (LINK)

SND Gems has cnother version with invisible-set sides for $1500 again (LINK) and several other versions... The head of these rings comes eparate, they can fit any shape of diamond.

Perhaps other sellers would have BN's setting (is a farely basic design) if you ask.

I dunno about Jared''s, but I negotiated at my B&M store. Mentioned pricescope. He worked with me. Wasn''t as cheap as online (taxes), but it was close and I really liked his service.
