My mom just called me and one of her cats is missing :((

My dad is at rehab recovering from knee surgery and she had been doing work in and out of the house today and realized a few hours ago one of the cats was missing. She thinks he must have gotten outside and it is dark out now and though she and her neighbors went up and down looking for him he is nowhere to be found. Problem is he is not an outdoor cat and is not tagged/chipped or anything. We are all sick about it and I don't know what to do. I figure asking for PS dust could only help so here I am once again asking for the magic dust.

We are heartbroken and scared as she lives in a semi urban environment with cars and danger everywhere. Of course she is so sick about it and he is just a baby still- less than 1 and a half. He was a rescue from a litter of kittens my parents found and saved. The rest of the litter is at the Peace Plantation in upstate NY but they kept JJ because they fell in love with him even though they already had 3 other cats and a dog.

Please think good thoughts and pray for him. Thank you.

Oh no! Sending vibes for a good outcome!

Make sure she puts a bowl of food outside and leaves a porch light on if you have one! A few years ago, I had just moved across the country to a brand new apartment. We hadn't been there longer than a week when a friend stopping by didn't close the door all the way when she left after a visit. When I awoke the next morning, the door was wide open and my cat was gone! I was so worried because he too didn't wear a collar, he was a strictly indoor cat, and we'd only been in that apartment for a week so I wasn't sure if he really had any type of "bearings". He was gone for two LONG days and I was a crying mess, but sure enough, around 11:00 at night, he came to the back porch where I had left the bowl of food and I was so relieved! I hope you have the same result!

Oh, no! DUSTDUSTDUST!!!!

We have a neighbor that keeps a heated kitty tower on her front porch, one of the carpeted jobs. She puts electric heating pads inside. I'm wondering if your mom could set one of those up tonight and if her kitty finds his way home tonight he'll have a warm place to stay until she wakes up. We often see kitties snuggled up in there, so the warmth definitely attracts them.

Oh, I'm just sick for you. I hope she finds her kitty soon!

good idea re leaving food out....but only if she is sure another cat won't fight her cat for it, a raccoon is in the area, etc. even urban areas have "critters".... i hope kitty is only hiding outside the house and will come out with a food bribe.

Sending you lots of dust. This has happened to me and it's a terrible feeling.'

Once I lured one of my guys home by sitting quietly on the front porch and flashing his laser light on the lawn.

Thank you guys. Great suggestions and I relayed each one of them to my mom.

Thank you Sonny for your help. My mom has left the front and back light on but unfortunately doesn't want to leave food out as there are lots of raccoons in their neighborhood. I told her to leave the back sliding door partially open with food inside that room (keeping the rest of the house blocked from that room so none of the other animals get out) but my dad doesn't like that idea as she is alone in the house and he wants her to lock up before she goes to bed. I know a raccoon could get inside also but I guess that is a risk worth taking (IMO) to get JJ back but I guess my dad is right that risking my mom's safety is a bad idea though their neighborhood is safe. I am so glad you had a good outcome Sonny and that your darling kitty is safe and sound!

Thank you for that excellent suggestion Haven. Love that idea. Shared it with my mom and she said she will see what she can do.

Thank you movie zombie for your suggestion. Really appreciate it. I don't think JJ is anywhere around the outside of the house though...he would have come when called. I so hope he manages to get through the night and that he comes home soon.

Lulu, super idea! Thank you so much. So glad your furbabies came home safely! It is a terrible feeling and I am worried sick about JJ's well being and I can only imagine how my mom and dad feel.

Kitty come home!!! Dust to your mom, Missy. I hope her cat makes a safe return very soon.

I brought a kitty home from college one summer to live at my parents' house until I returned to school in the fall. My father thinks all animals should be indoors/outdoors dwelling, and even though I had told him I wasn't ever going to let this cat outside he let the cat out while I was at work one day. Said cat did not return for 48 hours and I was livid, and very upset, of course. Point of my story is that my kitty came back and I think your mom's will, too.

I hope her kitty makes it home safely.

Been there, too. I am so sorry and hope he comes home soon! One of mine was gone for several days one time but did come home.

HI:

Hope kitty comes home soon.

kind regards, Sharon

Oh no! Sending lots of dust to you and your mom! I have heard several stories from family and friends about their cats getting out and not returning for a couple of days. It seems they always find their way back but they are such curious little creatures that they have to go explore for a bit first. Hope some of the other posters' tips work and JJ returns home very soon!

Uh oh! Sending lots of dust. I hope JJ comes home soon.

Me too.

Dust.

Oh no-tons and tons of dust that the kitty comes back soon!

Thank you monnie, tacori, diamondseeker, sharon, stargurl, mary, Danny, Thing for all your good wishes and PS dust. Much appreciated.

No sign of JJ yet. I just spoke with my mom and she worries he won't be able to find his way home. It gives me hope though that some of you have been through this and your furbabies have been able to find their way back. I am concerned that he will be hit by a car because there is so much traffic and speeding and people drive like maniacs around there. And to make matters worse my mom will be away from home during most of the daylight hours as she is visiting my dad in rehab. He is sort of far away and it is a long trip so she leaves in the morning and comes home after dark. So if JJ does come back during the day no one will be there. :((

Thanks again and keep thinking good thoughts that he will come home safely!

YAY!!!! He's back and he's OK!!!!!!!! :appl: :appl: :appl:

My mom just called me from the rehab center and told me her neighbor saw JJ in my parent's backyard and so she went over and called his name and opened my mom's back door and told JJ to go in and he did LOL. We are all so relieved and happy! Thank goodness for my mother's neighbors! I cannot wait for my mom to go home tonight and give me a full report on how he is doing. What a mischievous little furbaby!

Thank you everybody for the good luck PS dust!!!!! :wavey:

YAY! just saw this update! SOOO happy the kittyis home!

Thank you GreyCat and Amy!! We are so happy! My mom said when she got home he wouldn't stop rubbing up against her and purring and now he is wiped out and sleeping on their bed. So so relieved!

Woohooooo!!!!!!!!! So glad he is back safe and sound :appl: :appl: :appl:

Glad he made it home. :appl: Too bad he can't talk. I'd love to hear about his little adventure.

that's great news! usually, an indoor cat does not like the reality [wet paws, no food, dangerous dogs, etc] and will get back into the house pronto!

Congratulations! I just opened this thread, and read through the whole story. So glad about the happy ending!

Thank you lulu, stargurl, movie zombie, mary poppins, Arkteia (love your new name Arkteia btw)!

Lulu,I agree! Thank goodness the neighbors were around and looking for JJ to come home while my mom was visiting my dad. She is going to see him every day as they have never been apart for this long.

That's what I was concerned about movie zombie. There is no way he could survive outside for any length of time. He was born outside and as soon as my parents found the litter of kittens and the mom they fed and sheltered them (winter was approaching if I remember correctly) until they were old enough to be neutered/spayed and adopted. The mom cat (she was so young herself) too.

mary poppins, I also wish he could tell us of his adventures. I suspect he was scared and I was so scared for him all Sunday night and Monday till he came back. It was raining overnight on Sunday and so foggy Monday morning here. No clue where he went. I remember a while ago someone documented a cat's adventures with a video camera attached to the cat. I think that's what they did. It was very interesting. I cannot remember where I saw it though or I would link it here. Maybe someone else knows what I am talking about and will link it here.

I came here to say that I hope JJ turns up soon, but it looks like the dust worked already. I'm glad!

Thanks Zoe! PS dust really is magic- I feel guilty for asking for it a couple of times this year but so appreciate the kindness and generosity of PSers!
