I never heard about couples exchanging wedding gifts until recently, and it really appealed to me especially since we''re getting married by ourselves, it just seems fitting. I really want to get him a decent watch and I got this thought in my head that I want it to be a total surprise

One problem, we share our finances and since this will be a surprise my budget will be limited to what I can save on the side without him knowing

I know NOTHING about watches, my FI never owned anything more expensive than $80, and my budget is about $600-$1000 max. I never knew how expensive watches are!

I love Tag Heuer watches but the ones I really like are way out of my budget. I found THIS WATCH which looks promising. He tends to wear watches that are more sporty but I want to get one that can be versatile for everyday wear and all occasions.

I really need help! I would love some recommendations, thoughts on the watch above, and any help you can provide. I''m really excited to be able to do this for my FI but am worried about making the wrong decision

I got my fiance a watch too! I have been saving for it for 1 yr now. Great idea, he''ll love it and the one you chose is really nice!
I plan to give it to him the night of the rehersal - before we part ways, - : )

Have you looked into Tissot''s? They''re also a really nice Swiss brand, but have many watches at lower price points than Tags.

I originally considered getting a Tissot (possible the Le Locle) for my fiance, but since he specifically mentioned (somewhat jokingly) that he really loves the Tags, I''ve decided to cave and get him one. I can''t get over how expensive they are myself, but then I keep reminding myself how much he had to fork over for my little ring and then somehow a $1500 watch doesn''t seem quite so bad...at least it has a function!

That Tag is gorgeous, but if you are looking to save some $, I''d reccommend Swiss Army - Victorinox watches. Very nice watches in the $400 range and some higher that have more sporty options. I own two and so does FI and we love them - very versatile.

Thank you so much for your suggestions, I''ll definitely take a look to see if I can find something I like. I really do like Tags a lot and would LOVE a Carrera

But with the wedding a little over 2 months away (

) there''s no way I can come up with that sort of money on the side

Are Tags worth it? Among his friends would they recognize it as a quality watch? Just hard to imagine from someone who has no idea why someone would spend so much money on a watch... (yes I know, same could be said for diamonds

I got my Fiance a Tag as an egagement watch (i thought that he spent so much on my ring he deserved something nice too...) anyway, Tag''s are generally recognized as extremely high quality watches (i''ve heard them called the young mans'' rolex..lol). The one i got my fi was 1800 i believe and he loves it! they''re really nice watches and i know alot of guys that like them.

I think whether or not it''s "worth it" is really up to you. Are there other watches out there of equal quality and looks that cost much less than a Tag? Definitely. But how important is the brand name to you (and your FI)?

Chances are if your FI is sitting on a bus or standing on a corner, most people standing nearby are not going to immediately recognize the brand (unless of course they just happen to be watch connoisseurs). Tag definitely is a well-recognized brand, but I have many guy friends who, if you mentioned the name, probably wouldn''t know the difference between that and a Fossil....kind of depends on your circle.

I think ultimately you have to go with something you like and that''s in your budget. If you love that watch and can afford it, go for it!

I will say, though, that if down the line you decide to "upgrade" to something in the $1000+ category, that you read up about automatic vs quartz movement. Most of the really high end brands specialize in automatic...It''s actually less accurate at time keeping than quartz, but collectors prize them for their craftsmanship and tradition. They also require more maintenance, but will last a lifetime whereas a quartz watch is only as good as the lifespan of its battery (mechanical watch parts are easily replaceable, but batteries eventually become obsolete).

I also recommend Swiss Army watches...in fact, I purchased one for my fiance as his wedding gift. Like your FI, my FI never had a watch that was super-expensive. The watch that he has been wearing for the last few years is by Kenneth Cole, and before that, he wore several Fossil watches. I was originally thinking about buying him a Rolex, but knew that he would not feel comfortable wearing something so expensive -- to make the jump from a watch that cost about $150 to one that costs thousands of dollars. So, I went to Nordstrom since they have a lovely selection of watches.

Here''s the watch that I got him:

This watch came in two sizes, and I purchased the larger size since he''s 6''5". The smaller one is really nice, and a few hundred less than this one.

Here''s the general search page of other Swiss Army watches:

Good luck!

That Tag IS gorgeous! I think that is a great choice personally.

Babyblue033 -

All of the watches that everyone suggested are really nice (I love the Tag Heuer that you posted), but I just wanted to show you all the watch that I gave my husband on our wedding day....he LOVES it!

Hubby always joked that he loved my engagement ring "bling," so I found this Fossil watch at Macy''s for $95 that has a teeny tiny diamond at the 12 o''clock spot. It may not be as expensive as some other watches I looked at, but was very simple and seemed to fit his personality. Good luck finding the perfect watch for your soon-to-be husband! I am sure he will love anything you choose!

Hi,

I think a Tag is awesome! You can also look at Oris they make beautiful watches and should be at a price point of about where you are looking. http://www.oris.ch/home.aspx. This is only a personal opinion, but I would try and purchase a watch from a an authorized dealer of the type of watch you want. There are tons of "reproductions" out there. It may cost a little more, but it is a larger purchase and you should be sure you are getting what you paid for. Good luck with your selection, your husband will love it I am sure.
