We are going to visit a few friends in NY and I just bought this skirt, for a birthday party (our friend is celebrating her 36th b-day and we''re going out to dinner).

I had a hard time coming up with a top that I thought looked good with this skirt - and I tried a LOT of tops on - a plain black cami looked OK but I thought it was too plain - I want something equally pretty/special on top (w/o being busy). Black looks better with it than white - but I thought the right pink might look good also. I also thought fitted looked better than loose but it''s got to be the right kind of fitted/material so it doesn''t make the outfit look tacky.

I''m starting to think I should return it because I am getting frustrated with it.

Any suggestions/ideas?

Oh, and Freke, if you''re reading this, I''m going to be needing need a pair of black sandals too.

Something sexy and stiletto but not too high...

What a great looking skirt!

I''m envisioning a ruffle style top to go with it. Maybe something like this Pink Tartan top?

This top is from Ralph Lauren.

ETA: something in turquoise might also work, I'm thinking...

Love the skirt, I totally would top it with something bright. Teal, fuschia, lime, bright Purple or something but solid color. Cute, I love it!
how bout something from Banana Republic, they always have something fresh.

i love Banana Republics slinky t-shirts. Made of modal, or something. I thinka simple top would look great. If you want to be black, you could always spice it up with a bib necklace in fun colors.

Thanks, guys, you''ve given me some ideas...and I''m so glad you like the skirt!

I like the ruffle top from RL - although I have a feeling the sleeveless would look better on me.

I would really love to see how something bright (and solid) looks against the skirt - I''ll have to take a ride a ride to Banana Republic, maybe Ann Taylor, too.

I agree with a plain black shirt but a very interesting necklace...

Starset - LOVE that necklace! Is that from JCrew?

I know it''s Gerard Yosca but I can''t find it for sale on any online retailers...

How about a black vest like this with a camisole under it [maybe black, white, fuchsia or teal].

I would pair the outfit with peep toe regular or d''orsay pumps [preferably with a platform but that may be too high based on what you said earlier] instead of sandals.

This could work too [In fact, the site has this paired with your skirt! LOL!]

Id actually stay away from a black top. Give it a POP of color to give it more character. I''d try bright colors like yellow, orange, green or blue.

How about something like this blue top: here

Or this pink top: here

I''d pair it with a cute pair of shoes in a bright color as well. But don''t match the color of the top, go with another complimentary or secondary color...

You could also do a cropped jacket like this with a splash of color underneath:

Thanks to EVERYONE for your suggestions!

I really like the idea of a POP of color...I think it would make the outfit so much more interesting.

I do like the AT top...I think I''ll go tonight and see if they have it.

I''m intrigued by the shoes in a secondary color although it is way bolder than I would normally imagine/do on my own...if I was to do the AT turquoise top, what colors would you be thinking of for shoes?

CJ- Gorgeous skirt! I agree that a coloured top and complimenting coloured shoes would be fabulous! Even if you do go with a black top, I''d go for a bold colour on the shoes. Black and white looks fabulous with fushia and yellow or turquoise. I have a black and white dress with a similar pattern that I wear with yellow peep toes and a bright turquoise bag. I love the blue top that Dremgirl suggested. It would look great with shoes like these:

Or these if you prefer a fushia shoe:

Your welcome! I hope you find something you truly like with it. That skirt is to die for **drool**

For shoes I'd go with yellow (like the pair upgrade posted) or even red or orange/coral shoes would be adorable. If it's too over the top you can always stick with black. It depends on how much POP the top you buy gives off and how comfortable you are with adding more color. (If that makes sense)
