I love sad songs. They somehow make me feel better if I am in a sad mood. I don't know why but they do. I love many different genres of music but within all of them sad songs move me the most. Can you name a favorite sad song of yours?

Non holiday sad song. I LOVE this song so freaking much. Brings up powerful emotions especially thinking about my darling Francesca.

This is a great rendition of the Hank Williams classic IMO.

Cat's in the Cradle by Harry Chapin. My daughter used to cry every time she heard it. It is powerfully sad because it's such a common thing.

I love that one. Tragically sad I agree. Life goes so fast. Must cherish every moment and not take loved ones for granted.

I have to go search this one. Not sure if I know it. I love hearing new (to me) pieces though. Thank you.

If Tomorrow Never Comes-Garth Brooks

Sometimes late at night
I lie awake and watch her sleeping
She's lost in peaceful dreams
So I turn out the lights and lay there in the dark
And the thought crosses my mind
If I never wake up in the morning
Would she ever doubt the way I feel
About her in my heart
If tomorrow never comes
Will she know how much I loved her
Did I try in every way to show her every day
That she's my only one
And if my time on earth were through
And she must face this world without me
Is the love I gave her in the past
Gonna be enough to last
If tomorrow never comes
'Cause I've lost loved ones in my life
Who never knew how much I loved them
Now I live with the regret
That my true feelings for them never were revealed
So I made a promise to myself
To say…

Easy. Jeff Buckley's rendition of Hallelujah.

I am with you. My favorite version of Hallelujah. So moving.

Luther Vandross, Dance with my father. Twenty years later it still gets me right in the stomach.

Yes, I really like this one, too.
This man had the voice of an angel. I could listen to Luther all day.

Missy....Joni, Joni, Joni
There's never a bad time to hear a Joni song.......
So many other beautiful sad songs mentioned so far....
This line always gets me...
IN the lonely light of morning, in the wound that would not heal, it's the bitter taste of losing everything that I've held so dear....

Anything by Bread.
One song in particular , the title now eludes me, “why can’t I have you...” or something to that effect. The ugly crying begins a few seconds in.

I love sad/melancholy songs as well and have a ton of favorites. I was listening to "Run" by Leona Lewis earlier...

Fast Car by Tracy Chapman. When I was young I listened to it so many times and I thought it was a hopeful song but now that I'm older I find it just a terribly sad and depressing statement about the struggles of women in an unforgiving society.

Big Yellow Taxi by Joni Mitchell, such a great melody but oh boy such depressing lyrics.

The cover of "Autumn leaves" by Eva Cassidy. Every time I hear her singing it gives me chills..

I also love many sad songs by Nick Cave and Leonard Cohen, and also "le poinçonneur des lilas" by Serge Gainsbourg.

Mochiko, have you heard Yves Montand's rendition of Les Feuilles Mortes? Here it is, just in case.

Also, great Serge recommendation! I'd like to throw in Manon (for some sadness and confusion :) ).
