I was just looking into how to change my name and went through some old posts. I then did a search online and found a helpful site I never saw mentioned so I thought I''d post it here for convenience.

http://newlastname.org/

I''m planning to add FI''s last name to my own last name with no hyphen (instead of making my maiden name a middle name). I sure hope that doesn''t cause as many problems for me as I''ve read here.

Totally depends on the state. Some states are very easy, others make it a PITA.

where do you live MoonWater? My friend just did it with no problems-we live in IL.

thanks for that site moonwater

I'm in Maryland. I'm really hoping it's not a big deal because I'm determined to do it that way. I don't like hyphens and I don't want my maiden name to become a legal middle name. I don't even care if most people drop it, I just want to know it's still part of my last name. Weird huh? Also I plan to use my maiden name professionally and his name in every other circumstance.

DMB- no problem!

I just wanted to add that I went with a recently married friend to the ss office to change our names, and she changed her maiden name to her middle name with absolutely NO problem (this was in PA). She was totally expecting to have to jump through hoops, but they changed it without any additional steps.

Hey, Moonwater! When I was considering every option under the sun for keeping my maiden name in some capacity, I inquired about the non-hyphenated double last name. I live in MA, where adding a second middle name is a huge PITA (though I ended up going that route anyway), but seriously considered what you want to do, most notably because it was something I could do on the marriage license itself and not through the court system. In any case, what I learned is that a non-hyphenated double last name is legally the exact same as a hyphenated last name, so you have to use both names on anything legal. Your SS cared, DL, passport, etc. would be in the non-hyphenated double last name, then you''d use that name on our W-2s, birth certificates for future children, mortgage, car title, you get the idea.

Ok, I want to make sure I understand correctly. I will sign my new name with both last names and will not have to use the hyphen. It will also appear without the hyphen on all legal IDs. Then i get confused here: "then you'd use that name on our W-2s, birth certificates for future children, mortgage, car title, you get the idea."

I don't have to give my future children my double last name right?

ETA: I read the post again...Ok, you meant MY name on my children's birth certificate. Doh!

Thanks a lot NEL! I really appreciate and it makes me feel better about everything. I'm totally up for that.

Oops, so sorry, that was my fault for not clarifying. Yes, I meant your name...apparently this is a big issue for those who use their maiden name as a midldle name or second middle name cosmetically (i.e. not getting it changed in court)--the birth certificate isn''t legal if the parents'' names aren''t their legal names. Sorry for the confusion!

I''m doing the exact same thing. No hypen, double last name, keep the maiden name professionally and his name in other cases. How weird!

I hate hyphens. I don''t know why. I don''t know if a hyphen did something to me in former life or something, but I shudder at the thought of having a hyphenated last name... and don''t even get me started on giving my children a hyphenated last name... *yuck* LOL
