I know the name change topic has been discussed ad nauseum but I have a question of a different nature regarding this same subject.

Aside from the social security admin (if you''re in the US) and the DMV what other agency/organization/bureaucracy should you notify?
Bank?
Lien holders?
Insurance agencies?
Place of employment? Yep
Credit card companies?

More importantly what are the consequences of not having your new name with all the appropriate people?
This seems like such a hassle.

Passport agency, and don''t forget to update your tax filing status!

It is a hassle, but if you change one you should ideally change them all. You never know what each person/agency is going to use to verify your name or what you will have to show. If you write checks, then the name on your checks will need to match your DL or Passport will need to match traveler's cheques you might get from your bank and your DL for traveling.

Like, if you change your name at work... and say you have direct deposit. There's a good chance your company will not be ok, with depositing your check to a bank account that does not share the same name.
Personally, for that reason, and the fact that since I work for a bank, my employer will want EXTENSIVE government documents stating that my name has indeed changed, I have decided to change my name at work, very last, and more than likely, I will change my name at the bank at the same time. I don't want any issues with my pay check.

If you are going to change your name, I would change anything and everything that you have your name on. There are websites that give you a step by step process of how to go about it:

Anything that has your name on it.

You can find lists by googling and/or on sites like TheKnot.com.

I notified anyone who sent me a bill (cc companies, student loan co., insurance co. etc.).
