My mother called me today, hysterical. She was in the grocery store today and looked down to see the diamond from her ring gone. It's her mother's ring and has HUGE sentimental value, not to mention, it's the only diamond she's ever had. She's beyond upset. It wasn't a large stone- perhaps .40 and I think a transitional cut. I was JUST looking at it this past weekend when I was home. She wears it 24/7 and can't remember specifically the last time she noticed it. My sister said she was cleaning out closets yesterday, so we're going to have her go thru them with a fine tooth comb.
I asked her to please take it to the local jeweler in town ASAP and have them measure what mm size fits in the head. She was so upset, but I begged her to go do it, that I would get it fixed- that even though the stone won't hold the same sentimental value, the ring is still sentimental and to PLEASE let me help her fix it (she really doesn't have the means nor the knowledge to do so). I told her if we find the stone in the house (I wish I wasn't 4.5 hrs away) that we will put it back in the ring and put whatever stone I find her in a pendant.
I found a stone on Ebay earlier that I thought could be recut/repolished and work and it was a steal and I lost it by $4. Really. $4. Granted, I was trying to snipe it and so was someone else, but still. $4.
All that being said, once I find out the mm size, if anyone has pointers for places other than Ebay or DB to spot a decent deal, please let me know! Once I get a stone, I'm going to have it sent to someone reputable to redo all her prongs.
Sigh....
