My poor Mom...

My mother called me today, hysterical. She was in the grocery store today and looked down to see the diamond from her ring gone. It's her mother's ring and has HUGE sentimental value, not to mention, it's the only diamond she's ever had. She's beyond upset. It wasn't a large stone- perhaps .40 and I think a transitional cut. I was JUST looking at it this past weekend when I was home. She wears it 24/7 and can't remember specifically the last time she noticed it. My sister said she was cleaning out closets yesterday, so we're going to have her go thru them with a fine tooth comb.

I asked her to please take it to the local jeweler in town ASAP and have them measure what mm size fits in the head. She was so upset, but I begged her to go do it, that I would get it fixed- that even though the stone won't hold the same sentimental value, the ring is still sentimental and to PLEASE let me help her fix it (she really doesn't have the means nor the knowledge to do so). I told her if we find the stone in the house (I wish I wasn't 4.5 hrs away) that we will put it back in the ring and put whatever stone I find her in a pendant.

I found a stone on Ebay earlier that I thought could be recut/repolished and work and it was a steal and I lost it by $4. Really. $4. Granted, I was trying to snipe it and so was someone else, but still. $4.

All that being said, once I find out the mm size, if anyone has pointers for places other than Ebay or DB to spot a decent deal, please let me know! Once I get a stone, I'm going to have it sent to someone reputable to redo all her prongs.

Sigh....

oh my gosh...I am so sorry to hear this! I hope you find it...and if it is nowhere to be found I am confident that you can find a beautiful replacement stone.

I think some other PSers have shopped on Ruby Lane?

oh that is soo terrible. I hope that you find the original- and if not a suitable replacement. :(

I hope it all turns out happily April! She is lucky to have such a loving and supportive daughter! ::)

Oh nooooo! ;( ;( ;(

I am so sorry to hear that! I am sending you and your Mum a big hug and loads of that famous PS dust, in the hope that the original turns up.

If not, I am sure the fabulous treasure hunters, that are our fellow PS'ers will help you find a wonderful replacement.

Good luck :wavey:

Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear this! Sending dust (and prayers to Saint Anthony that you will find it).

oh, that is a heart breaker. I know I have that very same fear - what if one day, that setting is EMPTY!? Yikes. How horrible she must feel.

That's wonderful that you are already on the hunt for a new one. Maybe I missed it, but have you called the insurance company yet?

I hope it's just hiding in the closet. Sending you a handful of dust that it just reappears.... :(sad

It's not insured.... ;(

She is heartbroken. Hopefully the PS dust will work magic and she will find it. The "closet" she was working in is actually my oldest brother's former room. I talked her into turning it into a closet about six years or so ago.... It's not huge, but I know she's overwhelmed. I really, really wish I was there to look for it with her. ;(

oh... that's not such good news - not insured. Well, it's always surprising what good karma can bring, so if we are all sending her good vibes... who knows??? I hope she finds it. I wouldn't sleep a wink if I knew my diamond was out there - in the cold cruel world - missing me and wondering where I was.... :errrr:

Any chance its stuck in a pocket or fell in a cuff of pants or hem or something? Same with scouring her car --- kind of like they do on the CSI shows with a super bright flashlight?

Hope the dust works :halo:

I'm so sorry! I understand your exact feelings because I'm going through a similar thing with my mom - the jeweler melted her ring completely (!!!!) when she took it in to be resized and now she can't stand looking at/dealing with it, so I am finally doing it for her because she finds it so upsetting/overwhelming to think about. I know that while your mom is very upset about this, she definitely appreciates having a daughter who is knowledgeable enough about jewelry to help her through it, no matter the outcome.

I really do hope she finds it!

Sending LOTS and LOTS of dust to Mom!

(Although she may have "misplaced" her diamond, a wonderfully caring and thoughtful daughter like you is truly the most precious gem! :saint: )

I'm so sorry to hear about your mother's loss... I hope the stone does turn up somewhere soon.

My mother's diamond is a 2+ carat transitional cut that my grandmother - her MIL - passed on to her during their one and only meeting, which took place when I was in college. Unfortunately the original Tiffany-style setting was no match for my mother! She lost the stone twice. The first time, she found the loose stone in her purse. The second time, she had just started her shift at work when she noticed the stone was missing. She immediately re-traced her steps, and found the diamond near her car in the parking lot. The point being... don't write that diamond off yet!

I'm sorry honey. If you find the millimeter size and give me a budget I'll be happy to look to see what I can find for you.

Oh no!! Sending lots of dust your way!!

Oh poor Mom! That is upsetting -- I had it happen once too, discovered I was wearing an empty setting around & never found the stone. It's heartbreaking. She's SO lucky to have you to support her & with knowledge to help her replace it, but I hope the original turns up!

I can definitely appreciate how heartbroken she must be feeling. You did a wonderful thing offering to replace her stone and I hope she allows you to do that for her. The new stone will become almost as sentimental to her in time because you bought it for her.

Lots of dust and hoping she finds it in the closet!

So sorry to hear that! Sending dust her way.

Maybe you can suggest her to work in lower light and use a flashlight? Surely the diamond would shine up and make itself obvious. In any case, flashlights will be helpful looking in the car, purse, etc.

There is also the trick to vacuum the room and then sift through the vacuum dust bin... but that seems scarier to me.

I don't know what it is, but a couple times when I lost something small I had my kids look for it and they were very good at finding them. The latest time was a couple tiny bolts (to build a doll bed) lost in a shag carpet and my youngest was able to find them right alway by feel, walking around in her bare feet and feeling them out. the other time was a gemstone and my oldest used the flashlight trick to find it. She is lucky that she has a daughter who cares about jewelry to set it right.

Good luck I feel for you. Not to make this a PSA, but for those who have treasured but perhaps uninsured rings, please take them off at night and have an annual inspection of the prongs!

diamond dust headed your way!

My mom forwarded me an e-mail with this trick to find lost things that are small but you don't want sucked into the vacuum:

Stretch pantyhose over the vacuum hose and use the covered hose to vacuum all of the deep, dark corners. The lost item (hopefully!) will get sucked against the pantyhose.

I wish your mom lots of luck in her search. She is lucky to have a wonderful daughter like you!

:wavey: :wavey: Hi April 20 :wavey: :wavey: - any update for us? Any luck going thru the closets/pockets/hems/purses...??? We are all hoping it ends well and your mom finds her stone. Please pop in and give us an update!

Nothing has turned up so far. I am really tempted to drive up there and look for it with her. I want to get on my hands and knees and feel for it and use a strong flash light.

I asked her today about the mm size and she said the paperwork just said 1/2 ct. I asked her to try and measure it and she called me back to say it's either 4mm or 5mm but she cant say for sure because she's using a tape measure.... I would ask my sister to help, but she's in the middle of moving out of state, which also has my mother in a tither. Oy.

Thanks for all the dust.... I am hoping it works.

I hope she finds it!!

If it is 1/2 carat it should be close to 5 mm.

Has she found it yet April?

How sad :(

Another trick to use when looking is a black light. Don't know if you had tested it for fluorescence before, but it won't hurt. It'll stand out in the dark if it does.

Good luck and once you get a good measurement, let us know. We are a resourceful bunch!

No stone yet. I am going to see if she can get a black light, sounds like an interesting plan that might make hervfeel like she can do something.

I looked at the stones listed, but they are out of my budget. I need to do this a bit less expensive if possible. I am trolling Ebay and very other site like mad!
